After Indian woman caught shoplifting, US embassy's warning against theft: ‘It could lead to your…'

The US embassy in India has released a new advisory for US visa applicants. In a post on X, the embassy cautioned individuals against engaging in assault, theft, or burglary while in the United States. An Indian woman visiting the US has been detained in Illinois after allegedly shoplifting goods worth $1,300 from a Target store. "Committing assault, theft, or burglary in the United States won't just cause you legal issues – it could lead to your visa being revoked and make you ineligible for future US visas," reads the advisory. "The United States values law and order and expects foreign visitors to follow all US laws," the embassy added. The US embassy's warning comes after a viral video of an Indian woman caught shoplifting surfaced on social media. Indian woman caught shoplifting at Target An Indian woman was caught shoplifting at Target during her vacation in the US. According to the viral video released by the independent YouTube channel @BodyCamEdition, the tourist was caught trying to shoplift items worth ₹1.1 lakh ($1000). In the viral video, the woman is heard pleading with officers to let her go and let her pay for the products she allegedly stole. 'But if I'm paying for it, what is the harm?' she is heard asking n officer, only to be told - 'It would have been fine if you didn't leave, right? You would have had that opportunity to pay. But because you left the store at that point, you chose to not pay for it, and we can't go back.' The latest warning comes amid a series of restrictions imposed on US visa applications. Last month, a warning was issued by the embassy regarding illegal entry in the US after an Indian student was detained at an airport and deported. Furthermore, the federal government has called for strict social media vetting for all US visa applicants. The US Embassy has cancelled visa interviews and will be replacing them with a scanning of the social media accounts of the applicants.

Who is Avlani? Indian woman caught shoplifting $1,000 worth of items at US Target store

A shopping trip to a Target store in the United States took a shocking turn for an Indian tourist, identified as Avlani, after she was allegedly caught shoplifting nearly $1,000 (approx. Rs 1.1 lakh) worth of merchandise. The incident led to her immediate arrest and has since sparked widespread online debate. Footage of the arrest, captured on a police bodycam, was shared by the independent YouTube channel @BodyCamEdition, known for uploading raw law enforcement videos. The video has since gone viral, racking up over 835,000 views. — IndianInvasionN (@IndianInvasionN) In the clip, Avlani is seen pleading with police officers to let her pay for the items. 'Why can't I just pay for it?' she asks. One officer responds, 'We're way, way, way past that. You committed a felony.' When Avlani insists, 'But if I'm paying for it, what is the harm?', the officer explains, 'It would have been fine if you didn't leave. You would have had that opportunity to pay. But because you left the store at that point, you chose to not pay for it, and we can't go back.' Live Events Legal experts say such offenses can carry significant consequences—especially for foreign nationals. Alen Takhsh, a US-based immigration attorney, explains: 'This is a Crime Involving Moral Turpitude—one involving dishonesty—which could have serious consequences. If you're in the US on a student visa, an arrest or conviction for shoplifting could lead to visa revocation. If you're on a visitor or work visa, it might affect your ability to re-enter the US in the future.' The video has divided opinion online. Some commenters have expressed sympathy, suggesting the possibility of a cultural misunderstanding. Others, however, have called the incident deeply embarrassing for the Indian community abroad.

The undated footage, widely circulated across social media platforms, shows the woman, reportedly a visitor from India, being confronted and subsequently detained by US police for the alleged theft. The full 18-minute video, initially uploaded by a YouTube channel called 'Body Cam Edition,' reveals a Target employee telling officers that the woman had spent nearly seven hours inside the store before trying to exit with a loaded shopping cart without paying.
