The US embassy's warning comes after a viral video of an Indian woman caught shoplifting surfaced on social media.
Indian woman caught shoplifting at Target
An Indian woman was caught shoplifting at Target during her vacation in the US. According to the viral video released by the independent YouTube channel @BodyCamEdition, the tourist was caught trying to shoplift items worth ₹1.1 lakh ($1000).
In the viral video, the woman is heard pleading with officers to let her go and let her pay for the products she allegedly stole.
'But if I'm paying for it, what is the harm?' she is heard asking n officer, only to be told - 'It would have been fine if you didn't leave, right? You would have had that opportunity to pay. But because you left the store at that point, you chose to not pay for it, and we can't go back.'
The latest warning comes amid a series of restrictions imposed on US visa applications. Last month, a warning was issued by the embassy regarding illegal entry in the US after an Indian student was detained at an airport and deported.
Furthermore, the federal government has called for strict social media vetting for all US visa applicants. The US Embassy has cancelled visa interviews and will be replacing them with a scanning of the social media accounts of the applicants.

The arrest underscores ongoing tensions along the maritime boundary between India and Bangladesh, where fishermen on both sides frequently navigate contested or poorly demarcated waters. This is not an isolated incident. In October 2024, 95 Indian fishermen and six trawlers were detained by Bangladeshi authorities and were released only after serving nearly three months in prison. 1 2 Varanasi: CM Yogi Adityanath on Friday hailed tribal communities as the foundation of Indian civilization and warned against rising attempts to incite caste conflict through fake social media accounts, calling for immediate action to stop such divisive agendas. Speaking at a seminar on tribal freedom fighter Birsa Munda at Vasant Mahila Mahavidyalaya in Varanasi, Yogi said those who seek to defame the kanwariyas are the same people who tried to separate the tribal community from India. Underscoring the importance of social harmony, he said the Kanwar Yatra embodies unity transcending caste, creed and sect. "Today, the yatra is progressing peacefully and with devotion, yet some label it as unruly. These are the same forces that try to mislead and provoke tribal communities. We must remain alert to such divisive elements," he warned."They (divisive elements) conspired at every level to make them fight against India. This is the same community that always insults the faith of India and these are the same people who today want to create a situation of caste conflict by creating fake accounts on social media platforms," Yogi said. Taking a firm stance against divisive forces, the CM condemned the attempts to fuel caste and communal tensions through fake social media identities. Recalling a specific incident, he said, "A few years ago, there was a case of arson. I had remarked then that such an act likely didn't belong to any particular community. The investigation later confirmed that the person involved was wearing a saffron scarf, but was shouting 'Ya Allah'. These deceptive individuals must be exposed and excluded from society if we are to protect national unity." He cited another incident from Jaunpur, where a huge Tazia was constructed in violation of safety norms and came into contact with a high-tension wire, tragically claiming three lives. "Following this, an attempt was made to block roads and create unrest. I instructed the police to take strict action. Those disrupting social harmony must understand that peace and order are paramount," he asserted. He added that the same forces who spread caste-based hatred online had also tried to provoke tribal communities against the nation. "Such elements must face strict action," he asserted. Yogi said that tribal society has always been the bedrock of India's Sanatan tradition, highlighting its enduring role in defending the nation and safeguarding cultural values across eras. Bokaro migrant worker killed in Africa's Niger
Bokaro: A 39-year-old migrant worker from Karipani village of Gomia block, identified as Ganesh Karmali, was among the six security personnel killed in a terrorist attack on July 15 in the southwestern Dosso region, about 100km from Niamey, the capital of Niger, a West African country. Of the six, only Karmali was an Indian national. However, two other Indian nationals working and providing security to the same electrical company, Transrail Lighting Ltd, were abducted during the attack. Of the two, one was confirmed abducted while the other was unaccounted for, Indian officials in the African country confirmed. Local Niger sources suggested that at least one Nigerien soldier was also killed in the attack, which locals said was a terrorist attack, but the authorities are yet comment. Niger, under military rule following a 2023 coup, faced around a decade of violence perpetrated by jihadists affiliated with Al-Qaeda and Islamic State group. The Dosso region borders both Nigeria and Benin, where attacks regularly target civilians, the army and also a giant oil pipeline transporting crude from Niger to Benin. The authorities generally blame such attacks on "terrorists" or "bandits". Sikandar Ali, a social worker who advocates for migrant labourers, visited the family of the bereaved and called the incident a heartbreaking tragedy for poor workers, seeking livelihoods abroad. The Embassy of India in Niamey is in close contact with the employer, the families of the affected individuals, and the host government to facilitate the early repatriation of the mortal remains of the deceased and to ensure the safety and early release of the kidnapped Indian national. Bokaro labour superintendent Ranjit Kumar confirmed the incident, stating that the Jharkhand Migrant Cell is in active coordination with the Indian Embassy in Niger. "A team from the district labour department has visited the family of the deceased, and it has been decided that Rs 5 lakh compensation under the International Migrant Workers' Security Scheme will be provided to the immediate kin. Additional compensation from the employing company in Niger is being pursued," Kuar said. Meanwhile, five more migrant workers from Giridih, who went missing in Niger in April, are yet to be traced. Chandrika Mahto, along with four others — Sanjay Mahto, Raju Mahto, Faljit Mahto and Uttam Mahto — from Giridih's Dondlo and Mundro villages went to work with Kalpataru Projects International Limited, a power transmission company in Niger, to earn a living for their families. But in an unfortunate turn of events, all five were abducted in the West African nation on April 25, leaving their family members crestfallen for the last two months.
