Bolivia President Arce Declines Candidacy, Calls for Left-Wing Unity
Bolivia's President Luis Arce dropped his pursuit of reelection, calling for candidate Andronico Rodriguez to unite leftists ahead of the August vote and fend off a challenge from the right.
The decision is likely to bolster the bid of Rodriguez, the Senate president, to become the standard-bearer for the left. The right wing, meanwhile, remains splintered among several candidates, despite efforts by Bolivian billionaire Marcelo Claure to consolidate support behind a single contender.
