Six kittens dumped in rubbish tip named after Friends TV characters

The six smelly cats - Monica, Pheobe, Rachel, Ross, Joey and Chandler - have been adopted by their new families. Six 'smelly cats ' who were found dumped in a rubbish tip have been named after characters from the hit sitcom Friends. The kittens were found all suffering from severe malnutrition, flea, worm infestations and eye infections when they were rescued from Eyemouth Recycling Centre in the Scottish borders on May 27. ‌ The four-week-old kittens were nursed back to health by Borders Pet Rescue. ‌ Inspired by their strong bond the three males and three females were named after the TV show Friends - Monica, Phoebe, Rachel, Ross, Joey and Chandler - which featured a song 'Smelly Cat' about a mistreated pet. A member of the public contacted Centre manager Kim McNeill after finding the kittens at the recycling centre in a " heartbreaking scene". She said: "While working at the site, he found a tiny litter of kittens abandoned in the rubbish tip. Thankfully, he had rehomed cats through us before and knew exactly who to call. "When the six kittens arrived, they were estimated to be around four weeks old. "All were suffering from severe malnutrition, flea and worm infestations, and painful eye infections. They were frightened, weak, and understandably wary of human contact." ‌ Kim said they "acted quickly" with their vet team providing immediate medical treatment for their eyes and taking care of the parasites. She continued: "But their journey to recovery didn't stop there. These kittens needed more than medicine - they needed time, patience, and love. "Fortunately, one of our amazing foster carers stepped in and gave the kittens a safe, nurturing environment where they could begin to trust again. ‌ "Over several weeks, they slowly gained confidence, learned how to play, and experienced the warmth of a home for the first time." Once they turned eight weeks old, and became healthy the rescue began looking for their forever homes. Kim added: "Inspired by their strong bond and the laughter they brought to us, we named them after characters from the sitcom Friends, the three girls were called Monica, Pheobe, Rachel and the three boys were named Ross, Joey and Chandler. "Their story captured hearts on social media, helping us raise £4000 for their veterinary care and spread the word about their search for loving families." The six kittens have now been adopted into "wonderful homes". Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Get the latest news sent straight to your messages by joining our WhatsApp community today. 'Smelly cats' in rubbish dump named after TV's Friends

Six abandoned kittens suffering from fleas, worms and malnutrition have been rehomed after being found in a rubbish tip in the south of Scotland. The litter, three males and three females, were given the names of the characters from the sitcom Friends - Joey, Ross, Chandler, Phoebe, Monica and Rachel. Borders Pet Rescue nursed the four-week-old kittens back to health after they were rescued from Eyemouth Recycling Centre. Centre manager Kim McNeill said the "strong bond and the laughter they brought to us" inspired the names and they had now all found "wonderful homes". Kim said a member of the public contacted them after finding the kittens at the recycling centre in a "heartbreaking scene" on 27 May. She said: "All were suffering from severe malnutrition, flea and worm infestations, and painful eye infections. "They were frightened, weak, and understandably wary of human contact." "Fortunately, one of our amazing foster carers stepped in and gave the kittens a safe, nurturing environment where they could begin to trust again. "Over several weeks, they slowly gained confidence, learned how to play, and experienced the warmth of a home for the first time." After about a month in foster care they were "healthy and full of personality" and Borders Pet Rescue began to look for their "forever homes". "Inspired by their strong bond and the laughter they brought to us, we named them after characters from Friends - three girls and three boys," Kim said. In the 90s comedy, guitar-playing character Phoebe famously sang a song 'Smelly Cat' about a neglected pet. Kim said their Kitten Friends had "captured hearts" on social media, allowing them to raise thousands of pounds for their veterinary care and spread the word about their search for owners. "We're delighted to share that all six kittens have now been adopted into wonderful homes, each beginning a new chapter filled with love and joy," she said.

What Keir Starmer's new UK–EU agreement means for Scotland

A central and controversial element of the deal is the extension of EU fishing rights in UK waters until 2038. This 12-year continuation maintains current access arrangements, which were initially set to expire in 2026. The UK Government argues that the move provides stability and certainty for the fishing sector. However, Scottish fishing communities and the Scottish Government have voiced strong opposition. Deputy First Minister Kate Forbes described the agreement as a 'great betrayal', emphasising that the Scottish Government was not consulted, despite fisheries being a devolved matter. To mitigate concerns, the UK Government announced a £360 million Fishing and Coastal Growth Fund aimed at investing in new technology, equipment and support for coastal communities. 🥩 Food and farming: Reduced red tape, EU standards apply The agreement includes a Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) Agreement, which aligns UK food safety and animal health standards with those of the EU. This alignment is expected to eliminate most routine border checks on animal and plant products between Great Britain and the EU. It will also permit the export of some previously restricted products, including burgers and sausages, back into the EU market. For Scotland, this is significant, facilitating smoother exports for key sectors such as seafood and agriculture. However, it also means that the UK, including Scotland, must adhere to evolving EU regulations in these areas. ✈️ Travel: Easier entry into the EU Under the new agreement: UK passport holders will be able to use e-gates at European airports, speeding up entry processes. Pet travel will be simplified, with the reintroduction of pet passports, eliminating the need for repeat veterinary certificates for each trip. This cat can travel to Europe with new passport (Image: Borders Pet Rescue) 🎓 Students and young people: Erasmus+ and youth mobility The UK has agreed to work towards rejoining the Erasmus+ programme, making it easier and more affordable for Scottish students to study abroad in Europe. In addition, both the EU and UK have agreed to work towards establishing a balanced youth experience scheme, allowing young people aged 18–30 from both sides to work, study, volunteer or travel in each other's countries for a limited period. The scheme is intended to provide a dedicated visa path, with mutually agreed terms and participant numbers. 🛡️ Defence and security: Opportunities for Scottish firms The agreement establishes a new UK–EU defence and security partnership, including access for UK defence companies to the EU's €150 billion defence fund – potentially benefiting Scottish firms in shipbuilding, aerospace and advanced manufacturing. It also commits the UK and EU to enhanced cooperation on security matters, including support for Ukraine, cyber security and countering hybrid threats. 🔌 Energy and environment: Closer collaboration The UK and EU have agreed to work towards linking their carbon emissions trading systems (ETS) to create a more integrated carbon market. They will also explore UK participation in the EU's internal electricity market, which could lead to more efficient energy trade and potentially lower energy costs.

Run by Dog's Trust and the Kennel Club, it is held every Spring at the Scottish Parliament, with MSPs able to either enter their own dogs or a 'borrowed' dog from a rescue centre to be crowned Holyrood Dog of the Year. For the first time, at the invitation of the Midlothian South, Tweeddale and Lauderdale MSP, a rescue dog from Borders Pet Rescue, Summer, took part in the annual celebration. Summer, a nine-year-old King Charles Cavalier Spaniel, was used for intensive breeding for years until she could no longer breed, after which she she was cast aside and came into the centre's care. She has now been found a permanent home locally. Ms Grahame said: 'Borders Pet Rescue does such a wonderful job and Summer was lucky indeed to find a home through them. She did not win a prize in this year's contest but, better than that, she has won a loving home.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad The service has been dedicated to the rescue and re-homing of domestic pets since 1988, with the twin purposes of finding suitable loving homes for abandoned and unwanted pets and to promote responsible pet ownership through education and training. Each year the charity rehomes more than 200 animals and aims to improve its capacity and facilities to better meet the needs of the local community. Kim McNeil, centre manager, said: 'Sadly, Summer's story is not unique. We are seeing far too many dogs coming into our care after being used solely for breeding, only to be discarded when they can no longer produce puppies. 'For anyone thinking of welcoming a dog into their life, I would warmly encourage you to visit Borders Pet Rescue or your local rescue centre. There are so many wonderful dogs, like Summer, just waiting for a second chance at happiness.' Further information about Borders Pet Rescue can be found at
