The flower festival was launched by Her Majesty Raja Zarith Sofiah, Queen of Malaysia. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa, in her keynote speech at the launch, said BFF was designed not merely to add to Labuan's calendar of events but also serve as a catalyst for diversification and socioeconomic revitalisation, Bernama reported. The festival themed 'Borneo Tropical Flora' features floral parades, garden installations and music performances. The event, which also saw traditional dance performances and ushers dressed in floral fantasy-themed costumes, showcased the uniqueness and beauty of Borneo's flora and fauna through themed garden exhibitions. A perfect spot to take selfies and wefies. The festival showcased 200,000 varieties of tropical flowering plants across 30 themed gardens. These included exotic species such as orchids, Rafflesia, medicinal herbs and native ferns. Participants from the public and private sectors, local community, schools and higher education institutes contributed to the success of the event. The festival also attracted foreign participants from neighbouring Brunei and Kalimantan, Indonesia. This is the first time the festival is held in Labuan, following 13 previous editions held in Putrajaya. BFF ends today.

LABUAN: About 100 Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) students are gaining hands-on experience as volunteers at the five-day Borneo Flora Festival (BFF) 2025, which began on Saturday. First-year student Muhd Alif Hazim, 21, from the university's main campus, said he travelled to Labuan specifically to volunteer at the inaugural festival. 'This is the biggest event I've joined this year. I wanted to improve my communication skills and meet new people,' said the Computer Science (Data Science) student. He said the Borneo Tropical Flora and the Borneo Rainforest Jewel exhibitions drew strong interest from visitors on the first day, particularly for showcasing various floral species, including tulips, sunflowers, pohon pontianak and orchids. Siti Aisyah Masyop, 23, a student from the Faculty of Computing and Informatics, said this was her first volunteer experience and an opportunity to gain new knowledge and interact with the public. The Selangor-born student said their tasks included giving directions and assisting visitors with taking photographs. 'Visitors have been friendly and we always ask if they need any help. With the large crowd, some may be unsure of where to go,' she said. Third-year student Anne Roza Robin, 22, from the Faculty of International Finance, said she had been involved in the festival since its initial flower-planting phase. Hailing from Keningau, she described the experience as meaningful, especially in preparing herself for the working world. 'There was a huge turnout on the first day of BFF. Despite the hot weather, we remained committed to assisting visitors,' she said. Meanwhile, Labuan Corporation said in a Facebook post that a total of 37,130 visitors were recorded on the festival's opening day. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Borneo floral fest in Labuan off to a vibrant start

LABUAN: The Borneo Flora Festival (BFF) 2025 got off to a vibrant start on the first day, attracting a total of 37,130 visitors, says Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa ( pic ). The Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) said the impressive figure was recorded through the artificial intelligence-based closed circuit television monitoring system operated by the Labuan Corporation that is used to manage crowd flow and ensure visitor safety throughout the five-day event. 'Crowd response is overwhelming and reflects the growing popularity of the BFF as a premier tourism and cultural attraction in Labuan,' she said after visiting the event yesterday. Dr Zaliha added that the festival not only brings colour and joy to the island but also serves as an economic catalyst, especially for local businesses. 'With more than 37,000 visitors in just one day, we are already seeing the economic spillover. Hoteliers, food stalls, local artisans and even home-based entrepreneurs are benefiting tremendously from this influx,' she said, Bernama reported. This year's BFF 2025 with the theme 'Borneo Tropical Flora' features, among others, floral parades, garden installations and dance and music performances.
