Clemson basketball earns a high grade in ESPN's report cards for the 2024-25 season
Clemson basketball earns a high grade in ESPN's report cards for the 2024-25 season ESPN's Myron Medcalf just wrapped up his final evaluation of the Clemson men's basketball season – and the verdict for the Tigers is a resounding A. In his ACC report card for 2024-25, Medcalf acknowledged that Clemson lost two major contributors from their Elite Eight run in 2023-24: PJ Hall, an all-ACC first team selection now with the Denver Nuggets, and seasoned guard Joe Girard III. But despite those departures, head coach Brad Brownell's squad regrouped like few teams can. 'The Tigers lost two key contributors… But Brad Brownell regrouped from the turnover as well as any coach in America could. Chase Hunter and Ian Schieffelin emerged as elite players in the ACC. And Jaeden Zackery and Viktor Lakhin, a pair of transfers, emerged as standouts for a Tigers squad that won 27 games, gave Duke its only ACC loss of the year and earned a 5-seed in the NCAA tournament,' Medcalf wrote. Clemson's 27 wins this season mark a school record, including victories over AP Top 5 opponents Kentucky and Duke. The Tigers also achieved an 18-2 mark in ACC play – the most conference wins in school history, with 15 of those wins coming by double digits, ranking third in ACC history. Notably, the Tigers went 9-1 on the road, setting a new standard with four more wins away than ever before. Medcalf handed out similar A grades to Duke, Georgia Tech, Louisville, SMU, and Stanford. At the other end of the spectrum, Miami was given an F after ending 2024-25 with a 7-24 overall record and a 3-17 conference mark. This final evaluation by Medcalf underscores both the impressive turnaround by Clemson and the exciting new faces that emerged over the season. April 25 - The Clemson board of trustees has approved men's basketball coach Brad Brownell's new six-year contract extension through the 2030-31 season. Financial terms were not disclosed in Friday's announcement, however The State reported it was worth a total of $27.5 million. Brownell's total salary will be $4 million in 2025-26 and $5 million by 2029-30. "I remain honored and grateful to have led this program for 15 years and for the opportunity to continue to coach and develop young people in both basketball and life at Clemson," Brownell said. "I'm appreciative of the support from (athletic director) Graham Neff, President Jim Clements and our administration to continue to build upon our successes in basketball -- on and off the court. Clemson makes a huge splash in the transfer portal landing guard Jestin Porter
According to multiple reports, Brad Brownell and the Clemson Tigers have secured a key addition to their backcourt with the commitment of former Middle Tennessee State guard Jestin Porter. Porter, a 6-foot-1 scoring threat, chose Clemson over several other programs, including Arizona State and Ole Miss. Considered one of the top mid-major guards available in the portal, Porter is coming off a strong junior season in which he averaged 15 points, 2.9 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 1.1 steals per game. He shot 41% from the field and connected on 36.4% of his three-point attempts. Advertisement Porter will arrive at Clemson as a rising senior with one year of eligibility remaining. He is expected to bring immediate offensive production and veteran presence to a Tiger backcourt that now includes returning guard Dillon Hunter and fellow transfer Efrem 'Butta' Johnson. This marks the sixth addition for Clemson out of the portal this offseason, and the second guard. Brownell has also added size to the roster with big men Nick Davidson, Carter Welling, RJ Godfrey, and Jake Wahlin. With Porter in the mix, Clemson continues to round out a roster that blends experience and scoring ability—something that could be crucial as the Tigers look to build on last season's NCAA Tournament run. Clemson lands former UAB guard Efrem Johnson in the transfer portal
Brad Brownell and the Clemson men's basketball program continued to reshape their roster with the addition of UAB transfer Efrem 'Butta' Johnson, who announced his commitment to the Tigers on Sunday. Johnson becomes the first guard Clemson has landed from the portal this offseason and brings a veteran presence to a backcourt that's short on experience. The 6-foot-4 guard has one year of eligibility remaining and is coming off a strong junior season in which he averaged 11.2 points, 1.7 assists and shot 35.9% from three-point range. He made 25 starts in 34 games and hit a team-high 56 threes for the Blazers. Johnson also scored 17 points in UAB's matchup against Clemson earlier this season and added a career-high 21 points in the AAC Tournament. Clemson has now added four players through the transfer portal, with Johnson joining frontcourt newcomers RJ Godfrey, Nick Davidson and Carter Welling. With several scholarship players departing, including starting guards Chase Hunter and Ian Schieffelin, Johnson provides much-needed experience. Dillon Hunter is the only returning guard with real minutes from last season, and the Tigers will also welcome four-star freshman Zac Foster and redshirt freshman Ace Buckner to the mix.
