Koundé lifts Barcelona to Copa del Rey glory with his extra-time winner against Madrid
SEVILLE, Spain — With the Copa del Rey final apparently ticking toward penalties, Jules Koundé pounced on the chance to snatch an extra-time winner to clinch Barcelona's 3-2 extra-time victory over Real Madrid on Saturday. The France defender surged forward when he saw Brahim Díaz turn his back on Luka Modric's short pass near Madrid's area. He intercepted the ball, dribbled forward and fired a perfectly-placed low shot into the corner of the net to ignite Barcelona's faithful at La Cartuja Stadium.

Mbappé limps off with ankle injury in Real Madrid's loss in Champions League
MADRID (AP) — Real Madrid forward Mbappé injured his right ankle in Real Madrid's 2-1 loss to Arsenal in the quarterfinals of the Champions League on Wednesday and was jeered by part of the crowd after a lackluster performance at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium. Mbappé, who is still looking for a first Champions League title, had to be replaced by Brahim Díaz in the 75th minute after twisting his right ankle. Most of the fans at the Bernabeu jeered the France star when his substitution was announced. He was able to walk off the field by himself, but was limping a bit. Mbappé, who hasn't scored in five games in all competitions, had no attempts on target on Wednesday. He was involved in a possible penalty in Madrid's favor in the 23rd, but a video review eventually overturned the referee's call that he was held by a defender inside the area. The injury comes 10 days before the Copa del Rey final against Barcelona in Sevilla. Arsenal advanced 5-1 on aggregate after winning 3-0 last week in London. Madrid failed to reach the last four of the Champions League for the first time since 2020. Mbappé is in his first season with Madrid. He also never won the Champions League while playing with Paris Saint-Germain, which will play Arsenal in the semifinals. ___ AP soccer:

Nigeria's World Cup Qualifying Hopes Dealt Major Late Blow; Egypt, Morocco Move Closer
Nigeria conceded a last-minute goal in a major blow to its World Cup qualifying hopes on Tuesday, when Egypt and Morocco all but booked their places at next year's tournament. Zizo's goal was enough for unbeaten Egypt's 1-0 win over Sierra Leone in Cairo, while Morocco looks assured of qualifying with a nine-point lead over its rivals after a 2-0 win over Tanzania. Real Madrid's Brahim Díaz scored a penalty after Nayef Aguerd broke the deadlock on a rebound for Morocco's fifth win from five games in Group E. Zizo struck just before the break for Egypt to maintain a five-point lead over Burkina Faso, which had defeated Guinea-Bissau 2-1 on Monday in Group A. Nigeria's nightmare Zimbabwe's Tawanda Chirewa scored in the final minute to silence the home fans in Uyo, Nigeria as the visitors claimed a 1-1 draw. Nigeria star Victor Osimhen put the Super Eagles on course to claim just their second win in Group C after Friday's 2-0 victory over Rwanda had rekindled Nigeria's qualification hopes. But the 21-year-old Chirewa, a late substitute, equalized in the 90th to earn Zimbabwe's draw. Meanwhile, South Africa defeated Benin 2-0 to consolidate the top spot. Bafana Bafana leads with 13 points from six rounds, five clear of Rwanda (which drew with Lesotho 1-1) and Benin. Nigeria stayed fourth in the group with just seven points. Only the nine group winners secure automatic qualification. The four best-placed runners-up will compete to be the African contender in FIFA's six-country playoff for the last two qualification spots at the World Cup next year in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Algeria makes a statement Wolfsburg forward Mohammed Amoura scored a hat trick as Algeria defeated Mozambique 5-1 to open a three-point lead over the visitors in Group G. Guinea's qualification hopes are all but over after a 1-0 loss to Uganda, the team's third defeat leaving it eight points behind Algeria in fifth. Cape Verde remained top of Group D with a 2-1 win in Angola, though Cameroon responded with Vincent Aboubakar scoring twice in a 3-1 win over Libya. Cape Verde stayed a point ahead of Cameroon. Sudan's missed chance Sudan lost control of Group B with David Sebit scoring in stoppage time to earn South Sudan a 1-1 draw. It allowed both Congo and Senegal to take advantage, which they did with 2-0 wins over Mauritania and Togo, respectively. Congo moved top of Group B on 13 points, one ahead of unbeaten Senegal and Sudan. Sudan dropped to third on goal difference. Black Stars twinkling Ghana moved atop Group I by scoring a total of eight goals in back-to-back wins over Chad and Madagascar, helping ease the disappointment of failing to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations in November. Otto Addo's team eased to a 5-0 rout of Chad in Accra on Friday, then enjoyed a 3-0 win over Madagascar on Monday to seize control of the group. Comoros, the surprise early leader, stayed three points behind Ghana on Tuesday with a 1-0 win over Chad. Elephants hold on Ivory Coast needed goalkeeper Yahia Fofana at his best as it held on for a 1-0 win over Gambia on Monday to stay a point above Gabon atop Group F. Sébastien Haller's early goal was enough for the Elephants to win in Abidjan, keeping the team top after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had scored twice for Gabon to beat Kenya 2-1. Ivory Coast, the reigning Africa Cup champion, had previously beaten Burundi 1-0 in Morocco on Friday, while Gabon had a 3-0 win over the Seychelles on Thursday. Tunisia consolidated top spot in Group H on Monday with two late goals to beat Malawi 2-0. Four rounds of qualifiers remain.

‘Talk now' – Real Madrid star's message to Atlético boss Diego Simeone
Real Madrid star Brahim Díaz made use of the opportunity to take aim at Atlético head coach Diego Simeone during this evening's meeting between the clubs. The latest edition of the Madrid Derby, of course, played out a short time ago. When all was said and done, it was Real Madrid who emerged on the right side of a 2-1 result, to secure a narrow first-leg advantage to take to the Wanda Metropolitano for the tie's return leg. And it was the aforementioned Brahim Díaz who proved himself the decisive figure. After Rodrygo's opener was cancelled out courtesy of a spectacular strike on the part of Julián Alvarez, Brahim conjured up a moment of magic of his own, carving out a yard of space in the penalty area before picking out the far corner in style. And, whilst celebrating, the Moroccan international sent a crystal clear message to none other than Diego Simeone. As revealed by Movistar, after Atléti's headmaster suggested in his pre-match press conference that Brahim was unlikely to start the fixture, the 25-year-old responded by repeatedly shouting the following in Simeone's direction: 'Speak now! You spoke yesterday! Speak now!' 🤫 "¡Habla ahora!"@Brahim marca y se acuerda de @Simeone. #LaCasaDelFútbol #UCL — Fútbol en Movistar Plus+ (@MovistarFutbol) March 4, 2025 Conor Laird – GSFN

Official: Real Madrid's Player of the Month for February
The winner of the Player of the Month award at La Liga giants Real Madrid has on Monday been unveiled online. And player to have scooped the prize? Brahim Díaz. Versatile attacker Brahim for his part took to the pitch on eight occasions across the month of February, moving in and out of Carlo Ancelotti's XI. And though the Moroccan did not exactly set the world alight on his way to just a solitary goal, his efforts evidently did not go unappreciated on the part of the Real Madrid faithful. This comes amid confirmation that Brahim has been named Los Blancos' Player of the Month for February. The former AC Milan man beat out competition from all of Luka Modrić, Vinícius Jr, Rodrygo and Jude Bellingham to snap up the accolade. Y el #JugadorCincoEstrellas del @Realmadrid en el mes de febrero es… ¡@Brahim! Enhorabuena y gracias por todos vuestros votos recogidos en la App del Real Madrid y en nuestra cuenta de X. ⚽ — Fútbol Mahou (@futbolmahou) March 3, 2025 Turning attentions back towards Real Madrid's road ahead, Brahim will no doubt be hopeful of playing a leading role once more tomorrow night, when Los Merengues play host to city rivals Atlético in the Champions League.
