Brice Turang goes deep twice as Brewers clobber Nationals

August 3 - Brice Turang homered twice and drove in four runs, and the Milwaukee Brewers routed the Washington Nationals 14-3 to complete a sweep of the three-game series. The Brewers, who boast the best record (67-44) in baseball, scored 38 runs and collected 56 hits in the series. Joey Ortiz had two hits and drove in four runs, and Brandon Lockridge had two hits and three RBIs for Milwaukee, which finished 6-0 against Washington this season. Milwaukee's scheduled starter, rookie Jacob Misiorowski, was placed on the injured list Sunday morning with a left tibia contusion. Logan Henderson was recalled from Triple-A Nashville and pitched 4 1/3 innings, allowing a run on three hits and two walks while striking out four. Aaron Ashby (2-1) pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings and struck out three for the win. Drew Millas had two doubles for Washington. Brad Lord (2-6) took the loss, allowing three runs on six hits over 4 2/3 innings. He struck out six and walked two. As in the first two games, Milwaukee scored in the first inning when consecutive singles by William Contreras, Andrew Vaughn and Christian Yelich made it 1-0. With two outs in the second and a runner on first, Turang homered to right center to make it 3-0. The Nationals broke through in the fifth when Millas doubled and Jacob Young singled off Henderson to cut the Nationals' lead to 3-1. Ashby came on and struck out CJ Abrams and James Wood to end the threat. Blake Perkins walked and pinch hitter Caleb Durbin singled leading off the sixth. Perkins scored on a sacrifice fly by Lockridge and then Durbin stole third and scored on Millas's throwing error on the play to make it 5-1. The Brewers broke it open against Zach Brzykcy in the seventh. With one out, Yelich walked, Isaac Collins singled and Perkins walked to load the bases. Durbin was hit by a pitch, forcing in a run, and Lockridge singled, scoring two runs to make it 8-1. After a wild pitch, Ortiz singled home two more runs. Ryan Loutus came on to face Turang, who homered to right to make it 12-1. Ortiz doubled home two runs in the eighth. Millas smacked a two-run double in the bottom of the ninth. --Field Level Media

Brewers star Jackson Chourio placed on IL with strained right hamstring

Jackson Chourio has been placed on the 10-day injured list after the Milwaukee Brewers outfielder strained his right hamstring while running out a triple on Tuesday night. The 21-year-old Chourio went 2-for-3 during the 9-3 win over the Chicago Cubs and was seen slowing down after rounding second base to lead off the bottom of the fifth inning. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Afterward, Chourio told reporters his hamstring was "tight" and he felt "a little tickle" as he accelerated once he realized he could get to third base. As he reached the base, he thought it might have just been a cramp. The Brewers are not taking any chances on their young star and he'll now get some time off. Chourio sat out Wednesday's series-finale loss to the Cubs. 'With a hamstring [injury], we're going to be cautious there, so it's probably going to be a little bit longer than we had initially anticipated,' Brewers general manager Matt Arnold said via 'We're not expecting anything excessive, but we just want to be super patient with a player the caliber of Jackson Chourio.' Chourio has followed up a rookie season where he finished third in NL Rookie of the Year voting with numbers that are on pace to top what he did in 2024. Through 106 games, the Venezuela native is slashing .276/.474/.786 with 17 home runs, 67 RBI and 18 stolen bases. Brandon Lockridge, whom the Brewers acquired Thursday from the San Diego Padres in the Nestor Cortes deal, has been added to the roster to take Chourio's place. 'Adding somebody like Lockridge and his athleticism should definitely help us there,' Arnold said. 'Obviously, we'll miss Chourio, [but] for hopefully a short amount of time here.'

Brewers place OF Jackson Chourio (hamstring) on IL

August 1 - The Milwaukee Brewers placed outfielder Jackson Chourio on the 10-day injured list Friday with a strained right hamstring. The move is retroactive to Wednesday, the day after Chourio sustained the injury while legging out a triple in a 9-3 loss to the visiting Chicago Cubs. "With a hamstring (injury), we're going to be cautious there, so it's probably going to be a little bit longer than we had initially anticipated," general manager Matt Arnold said. "We're not expecting anything excessive, but we just want to be super patient with a player the caliber of Jackson Chourio." The Brewers added newly acquired outfielder Brandon Lockridge to the active roster in a corresponding move. Chourio, 21, is batting .276 with 17 home runs, 29 doubles, 67 RBIs and 18 stolen bases in 106 games. He leads the National League with 445 at-bats and has made starts at all three outfield positions. Chourio finished third in the NL Rookie of the Year voting in 2024 after batting .275 with 21 homers, 79 RBIs and 22 steals in 148 games. Milwaukee acquired Lockridge, 28, from San Diego at Thursday's trade deadline. He batted .216 with five RBIs and eight steals in 47 games this season with the Padres. --Field Level Media

Reports: Padres obtain LHP Nestor Cortes from Brewers

July 31 - The San Diego Padres obtained left-handed pitcher Nestor Cortes from the Milwaukee Brewers for outfielder Brandon Lockridge prior to Thursday's trading deadline, according to multiple reports. Cortes, sidelined for nearly four months due to a left elbow flexor strain, is on the 60-day injured list. He just completed a four-outing rehab stint and had a 1.00 ERA in 18 innings at the Class A and Triple-A levels. The Padres added Cortes to the rotation on the same day it kept much-coveted right-hander Dylan Cease for the stretch run. Cortes, 30, was an All-Star in 2022 when he went a career-best 12-4 with a 2.44 ERA in 28 starts for the New York Yankees. This season, Cortes was 1-1 with a 9.00 ERA in two starts before going on the injured list. This was his first season with Milwaukee. Cortes is 34-22 with a 3.88 ERA in 137 appearances (88 starts) in eight seasons with the Baltimore Orioles (2018), Yankees (2019, 2021-24), Seattle Mariners (2020) and Brewers. Lockridge, 28, is batting .216 with five RBIs and eight steals in 47 games for the Padres. He has a .210 average in 100 career at-bats over the past two seasons. --Field Level Media

The San Diego Padres currently hold a 41-35 record, but after a promising start to the season, they have fallen behind in recent weeks, having lost seven of their last ten games. They now trail the Los Angeles Dodgers by five games in the NL West and sit a half game out of a Wild Card spot. Advertisement On the offensive side, the Padres have struggled in June, as evidenced by a .695 OPS—which ranks 22nd in MLB—and the clear need for offensive production. Moreover, star outfielder Jackson Merrill has been sidelined in concussion protocol since last Sunday's 8-7 loss after receiving a hard tag from Arizona Diamondbacks' Ketel Marte, further underscoring the challenges the lineup faces. San Diego Padres center fielder Jackson Merrill (3)Denis Poroy-Imagn Images Merrill exploded onto the scene last season, quickly becoming a integral part of the Padres' postseason push and finishing runner-up in NL Rookie of the Year voting. In a move ahead of Sunday's matchup against the Colorado Rockies, the Padres officially announced his return. 'You are my sunshine,' added another. One more replied, 'Bang!!'
