Brewers place OF Jackson Chourio (hamstring) on IL

Reuters01-08-2025
August 1 - The Milwaukee Brewers placed outfielder Jackson Chourio on the 10-day injured list Friday with a strained right hamstring.
The move is retroactive to Wednesday, the day after Chourio sustained the injury while legging out a triple in a 9-3 loss to the visiting Chicago Cubs.
"With a hamstring (injury), we're going to be cautious there, so it's probably going to be a little bit longer than we had initially anticipated," general manager Matt Arnold said. "We're not expecting anything excessive, but we just want to be super patient with a player the caliber of Jackson Chourio."
The Brewers added newly acquired outfielder Brandon Lockridge to the active roster in a corresponding move.
Chourio, 21, is batting .276 with 17 home runs, 29 doubles, 67 RBIs and 18 stolen bases in 106 games. He leads the National League with 445 at-bats and has made starts at all three outfield positions.
Chourio finished third in the NL Rookie of the Year voting in 2024 after batting .275 with 21 homers, 79 RBIs and 22 steals in 148 games.
Milwaukee acquired Lockridge, 28, from San Diego at Thursday's trade deadline. He batted .216 with five RBIs and eight steals in 47 games this season with the Padres.

Colchester lose new signing Perry with ACL injury

Colchester United midfielder Ben Perry is set to miss the rest of the season after suffering a serious knee 20-year-old ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and suffered other damage in the knee early in the 2-0 win at Shrewsbury Town last was only his fourth appearance for the U's after joining them from Nottingham Forest last month for an undisclosed fee."We've had the awful news that he's ruptured his ACL and also ruptured his medial knee ligaments," boss Danny Cowley told BBC Essex."There's definitely some internal damage there, so that will mean an op, which will rule him out for the season." Colchester are also without defender Ellis Iandolo and forward Will Goodwin because of injuries and are looking to add more new faces before the end of the transfer window."When you lose three key players, it's going to hurt and the team is going to suffer," added U's lost at home to Cambridge United on Tuesday and have taken five points from their opening four League Two games."If you look at it with context, you see a group that worked really hard against a heavyweight in this division, a really good team," Cowley said. "We took them all the way. When you do that against a backdrop of the (takeover) uncertainty we've had in the summer, the reduced finance that we have and three key injuries - if you put context to it, you'll understand why we feel there's a lot of things we did well."Colchester are next in action at home to Barrow on Saturday.

Jeremie Frimpong out until after international break with hamstring injury

Liverpool will be without new signing Jeremie Frimpong until after the next international break as a result of a hamstring injury. Conor Bradley is in contention to replace Frimpong having recovered from a hamstring injury of his own. Frimpong suffered the setback during the Premier League opener against Bournemouth, when he was replaced on the hour mark, and head coach Arne Slot revealed the injury could have been worse but for the intervention of Liverpool's medical team. The £29.5m signing from Bayer Leverkusen is likely to be out for four weeks but, with the first international break of the season from 1-9 September, the only games he should miss for Liverpool are Monday's visit to Newcastle and the home match against Arsenal next Sunday. Slot said: 'Conor trained for a few minutes with us today for the first time. The medical team were completely right about Jeremie and to tell me that I had to take him off because he is out until the end of the international break. 'I think I got criticised a bit for taking him off. It had nothing to do with how he played but we felt he had an issue with his hamstring and by we, I mean the medical staff. They were completely right. It was a good call to take him off otherwise he maybe would have been out for longer. We expect to have him back after the international break.' Bradley is not guaranteed to start at St James' Park given he has been out for several weeks while Joe Gomez, another potential replacement for Frimpong, has just recovered from an achilles injury. 'At the moment we only have two injuries but unfortunately it is two in the same position,' Slot added. 'The good thing is we have other players that can play there. Wataru [Endo] played there for a few minutes, Dominik Szoboszlai has already played there. There are other options we can explore. Joe Gomez is definitely one of them but for him to already play 20 minutes [against Bournemouth] that is already quite a lot. He is training with the team, so let's see where he is on Monday and if he can be involved with the team or even start. But there are other options.'

WNBA breaks single-season attendance record

August 21 - With three weeks left in the regular season, the WNBA already has broken the single-season attendance record by surpassing 2.5 million fans, the league confirmed Thursday. The total attendance so far of 2,501,609 was set with 13 teams playing a total of 226 games through Wednesday. The previous record of 2,364,736 fans was established in 2002 with 16 teams playing a total of 256 games. Although the league's spike in popularity largely has been attributed to the arrival of Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark in 2024, it's worth noting that Clark has missed 22 games due to injuries this season. --Field Level Media
