Passengers cheer as Southern Railway advances chart preparation 8 hours in advance
CHENNAI: Southern Railway on Saturday began preparing reservation charts eight hours ahead of a train's scheduled departure. As a result, rail passengers with waitlisted tickets on intercity trains such as the Kovai Express, Vaigai, Pallavan, Brindavan, Madurai Tejas, Lalbagh Express, as well as Vande Bharat and Shatabdi Express, departing between 5.40 am and 7.30 am from their respective originating stations, will now receive their ticket status by 9 pm to 9.30 pm on the previous day. So far, passengers received this information only four hours before departure, often between 1 am and 4 am. The zonal railway implemented this revised charting policy following a directive from the Railway Board. The move is intended to give passengers more time to plan their travel and to ease overcrowding in unreserved coaches, which often results in unreserved passengers occupying reserved compartments. Rail enthusiasts said the passengers with waitlisted tickets on overnight trains such as Pandiyan, Cheran, and Nilgiri Express, scheduled to depart between 9.15 pm and 10 pm, will now know their ticket confirmation status by 1 pm. This gives them enough time to explore alternative train services heading to Madurai or Coimbatore, if their overnight tickets remain unconfirmed. Travellers by early morning trains stand to benefit the most According to Southern Railway's revised order, chart preparation timelines are now as follows: For trains departing between 12 am and 5 am and from 2 pm to 11.59 pm, charts will be finalised eight hours in advance; for trains leaving between 5 am and 2 pm, charts must be prepared by 9 pm the previous night. A section of passengers welcomed the move, saying it ends uncertainty over early morning ticket confirmations. Frequent traveller S Viniyaga Murthi recalled waking at 3 am to check the status of waitlisted tickets for the Bengaluru Double Decker Express. 'The train departs at 7.25 am. As our tickets weren't confirmed, we ended up travelling unreserved,' he said. However, R Pandiyaraja, former Southern Railway Users' Consultative Committee member, said, 'Expanding terminal capacity in Tiruchendur, Tirunelveli, and Madurai and filling vacant loco pilot posts is the real solution,' he added.

Derby meeting jockey excited to make Epsom debut against role model Hollie Doyle
Isobelle Chalmers lines up in the Betfred 3YO Dash on Sandscreendeliverd, trained by Peter Crate. It comes a day after the teenager competes in an all-apprentice event at Goodwood Racecourse A teenage jockey is making her debut at Epsom's Derby meeting after taking every piece of advice from record-breaker Hollie Chalmers has her first ride around the famous track on Peter Crate-saddled Sandscreendeliverd in the Betfred 3YO Dash tomorrow. Run over what is considered to be the fastest five furlongs in the world, the event takes place just over an hour before the £1.5million Betfred Derby. Riding off 7st 9lb, her lowest in the last 12 months, 18-year-old Chalmers will come up against Doyle, who partners Kevin Ryan trainee Cape Sovereign. In May, Doyle claimed the record for the most winners ridden by a female jockey in Britain on Brindavan at Ascot. The 28-year-old's triumph was number 1,023 in a career which saw her make a Royal Ascot breakthrough in 2020 and in a Classic on Nashwa two years later. "Hollie is my role model and I've known her for a long time through my job as an apprentice at Andrew Balding's," said Chalmers. "She has watched some of my races back and helped me improve on little things, as well as in the gym as I'm light and a similar size to her. "She's so down to earth and it's great to have such a successful jockey to learn from." Chalmers kicked off her career in November 2024 by stunning the Lingfield opposition at 125-1 on Ashford Hill, a horse owned by her mother. The longshot lines up in the BetGoodwin Best Odds Guaranteed Fillies' Handicap at Goodwood this evening, on an all-apprentice racecard. "She's in form and back at six furlongs, so should have a chance," added Chalmers, a graduate of pony racing. Among her opponents on the night is Jack Doughty, who has a chance in each of the six races as he seeks his 100th career winner. Five of them, including Port Erin in the opening Bet Clever BetGoodwin Apprentice Handicap, are for his main employer Tony Carroll. Doughty rode out his claim on the trainer's sprinter Pop Dancer at Brighton on May 27 and he hopes to hit another milestone in West Sussex. "It would be great to reach 100 winners," he said. "At my age I feel very lucky to be doing this job and Tony has been very supportive." The raceday which first began in 2022 was created to give apprentices opportunities and celebrate emerging talent in the weighing room. It runs on a points-based system with a totaliser to decide who will be crowned Goodwood's leading apprentice, before DJ act Groove Armada takes to the stage after the thoroughbred action has concluded. Senior Racing Executive at the Professional Jockeys Association, Adam McNamara, said: "It cannot be understated how beneficial it is to our apprentice jockeys to have the opportunity to showcase their talents in front of a big crowd on a premier track."

Hollie Doyle praises 'tough' Hayley Turner after setting new record for women
Brindavan at Ascot gave Doyle winner number 1,023, taking her past newly-retired and mum-to-be Turner, who inspired many women to get into race-riding after her debut 25 years ago Hollie Doyle praised Hayley Turner for leading the way as racing's current female star set a new record for a female jockey at Ascot. Doyle moved past her former weighing room colleague on 1,023 wins when Brindavan took the Carey Group Handicap. The 28-year-old matched Turner - who made her debut 25 years ago and retired on Grand National day last month - at Chelmsford on Thursday. It was yet another milestone for Doyle, who broke the women's record for winners in a year back in 2019, which she concluded with 116. In March, the big fitness enthusiast hit 1,000 triumphs, nearly 12 years on from when she made a triumphant start on a horse named The Mongoose in a lady riders' handicap at Salisbury. But Doyle believes she would not have got so far in the sport had it not been for a role model like Turner, who is expecting her first child after a stellar career. "Hayley had it a lot tougher than I did and she's paved the way for people like me to go on and do this," she told the Racing Post. "And there's plenty more female riders in the pipeline who will go on to do it. "I've no room for slackening off the pace. You have to be really resilient in this sport and everyone has to work hard." Brindavan's trainer Sean Woods said Doyle - who had a long association with Group race winners Trueshan and Bradsell - is a "great asset to the sport." "We don't get to use her much but obviously today I asked her to get a lead and everything went like clockwork," he added on Sky Sports Racing. Born in Herefordshire, Doyle was an apprentice jockey at Richard Hannon jnr's stable, where she worked with her future husband and fellow top jockey Tom Marquand. The pair, who met in their pony club days, married in 2022 and have previously spoken about how they motivate each other to succeed. "We've both come a long way and some days we do sit back and really appreciate what's happened," Doyle added. "But we're also always looking forward to what we can do next or what's around the corner."
