Kochi rail caterer shut down over rotten food, no licence

Time of India14-05-2025
Kochi: The corporation's health wing on Wednesday shut down a catering unit in Kadavanthra that supplied food to Indian Railways, including for Vande Bharat trains, after stale and unhygienic food was seized during an inspection.Corporation officials said the catering unit named Brindavan was functioning without a licence, in unsanitary conditions, and was polluting a nearby water body.
"We found around 10–15 workers, all migrants from other states. The kitchen was on one side of the road, and the workers were housed on the opposite side, where one room was being used as a storeroom. We seized rotten eggs, spoiled dal, and other expired items," said a health official. He added that the workers' accommodation was also found to be extremely unhygienic. The crackdown followed complaints by residents and the local councillor. "About four months ago, residents of Kudumbi Colony informed me that a catering firm was discharging wastewater into the Punchathodu tributary. I raised the issue with the corporation, and officials issued a warning, asking the firm to install a wastewater treatment system," said Antony Painumthurua, councillor from Elamkulam division. However, the firm failed to comply. "They were caught discharging waste again and fined Rs 10,000. They were also told to obtain a licence, but never submitted an application and continued operations illegally," Painumthurua said. The final trigger came on Tuesday when residents reported a foul smell from the building housing the workers. "We found about 50kg of raw chicken emitting a strong stench. Although the meat was removed by the time officials arrived on Wednesday, other stale food items were still present," said S Sharath, president of the Sree Durga Residents Association. Following the inspection, the corporation has requested KSEB and KWA to disconnect the power and water supply to the unit.Meanwhile, opposition councillors slammed the corporation for its failure to regulate food outlets across the city. "A mobile food testing lab, bought using CSML funds, is lying unused. This reflects the administration's apathy toward food safety," said Antony Kureethara, opposition leader in the corporation.

6 Policemen Arrested For Constable's Custodial Torture In Jammu And Kashmir

Srinagar: The CBI on Wednesday arrested six police personnel, including at least two officers, in connection with the alleged custodial torture of a cop, following orders from the Supreme Court last month, officials said here on Wednesday. The arrested cops include a deputy superintendent of police, an inspector, and an assistant sub-inspector, officials said here. The accused cops were directed to submit their weapons and other government articles to the respective District Police Lines. One of the accused cops -- a special police officer working on an honorarium -- has been disengaged and struck off from Special Police Officer (SPO) rolls. Further details were awaited, the officials said. On July 21, the Supreme Court directed the CBI to register an FIR over the "brutal and inhuman custodial torture" of a police constable in Jammu and Kashmir and ordered the UT administration to pay him Rs 50 lakh in compensation. A bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta said the injuries caused to the constable during his illegal detention, particularly the "complete mutilation of his genitalia, use of pepper/chilly powder and electric shocks on his genitalia", were grave reminders of the inhuman torture meted out to him. "The cumulative effect of all these facts is deeply shocking to the conscience of this court," the bench said, adding that the violation of Article 21 is "not only evident but egregious." The bench observed that the constable suffered life-debilitating injuries in the custody of "fellow state actors" and despite repeated complaints, no effective redressal was provided.

BJP councillors begin strike at JMC-H over corruption

1 2 Jaipur: Over 20 BJP councillors began an indefinite strike against JMC Heritage mayor Kusum Yadav, at the municipal corporation headquarters Wednesday, accusing the civic body of being neck deep in corruption and holding it responsible for poor sanitary conditions in Jaipur's Walled City area. Councillors sang hymns and offered prayers for the mayor and commissioner. Yadav, an independent councillor from ward 74, was made the mayor in Sept 2024 with support of councillors from BJP. In JMC Heritage, the current board has BJP in majority. "In the current board, fake land leases are being issued, and despite councillors informing the administration about the issue, no action is being taken. This is blatant corruption as land leases are issued only after all officials and the mayor sign it," said Subhash Vyas, a councillor part of the protest. Councillors demanded that a fair investigation must be conducted by an agency and wrongly issued leases must be cancelled. Councillor Manoj Mudgal, who is also the chairperson of the encroachment prevention committee, said, "In the general body meeting of JMC Heritage, a proposal of allotting Rs 1 crore for development work in each ward was passed. The amount was also sanctioned, but now funds are not being issued. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Fazendo a diferença no ambiente corporativo Siemens Energy Learn More Undo Sanitation conditions have already been deteriorating, and recently chief minister Bhajan Lal Sharma also expressed displeasure over it. " They further said that beat sanitation workers are also not being given to councillors. For every ward, five beat sanitation workers, apart from regular waste collection, were also approved by the board. Councillors said that until their demands are met, the protest will continue, and they threatened to go on a hunger strike in the coming days. "Corruption is taking place openly, which will not be tolerated under any circumstances. In the Civil Line Zone, fake leases of govt land worth crores of rupees have been issued, which must be investigated impartially," added Mudgal. Councillors from different wards, including Suresh Navriya, Uttam Sharma, Manak Sharma, Santosh Kanwar, Anshul Sharma, Jyoti Chauhan, Vikram Singh, Subhash Vyas, among others, joined the protest. Despite attempts, mayor Yadav and commissioner Nidhi Patel, did not respond to calls for a comment. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
