Cardinals 20, Chiefs 17: What we saw from Arizona on offense

We look at what we saw from the offense against the Chiefs. The Arizona Cardinals defeated the Kansas City Chiefs Saturday night in their preseason opener 20-17. The starters played a little more than a quarter, but it was the backups who rallied back from a 14-3 deficit to win. As a team, they had 355 yards of offense, 24 first downs and converted 4-of-9 third downs. What can we take away from the offensive performance? Cardinals 20, Chiefs 17: Takeaways on offense The Cardinals rushed for 140 yards on the evening, which should be expected. Of the 140 yards, 51 came late from Zonovan "Bam" Knight in the final quarter as the Cardinals ran the clock out. The Cardinals expect to have a strong rushing attack shared between James Conner and Trey Benson. When quarterback Kyler Murray was in the game, the offense ran smoothly. He had only one incompletion. He completed passes to five different receivers. However, as sometimes the problem was last season, they didn't turn either of their two drives into touchdowns. Murray threw an interception and then they had to kick a field goal after Benson could not pick up a third-and-one run play. Brissett and the second-team offense went three-and-out on their first drive, and he was hit twice in three plays. But he led the Cardinals to two touchdowns, giving them the lead. He was exactly what fans expect — steady and efficient. He even used his legs once to set up the second touchdown. While Brissett was hit twice in the first possession he played, the pass protection was good. The Chiefs finished with only one sack and three quarterback hits, meaning the sack Clayton Tune took and the two hits Brissett took in thet three-and-out were the only ones of the game. 2025 Arizona Cardinals training camp roster preview: QB Jacoby Brissett

We will preview every player on the Cardinals roster leading up to training camp. This is about QB Jacoby Brissett. The Arizona Cardinals report to training camp on July 22 and begin the process of preparing for the regular season, forming the roster and determining starting jobs and roles on the team. Leading up to the start of camp, we will take a look at every player on the offseason roster, their background, their contract, their play in 2024, questions they face and their roster outlook. This focuses on quarterback Jacoby Brissett. Jacoby Brissett background, 2024 season Brissett is in his first season with the Cardinals, signing a two-year contract as a free agent. He is entering his 10th NFL season. He was originally drafted in th third round by the New England Patriots in 2016. He has been a journeyman starter and backup in his career, starting 53 times in the 87 games in which he has appeared. He is 19-34 in his 53 starts. His 1.4% interception rate is the lowest in NFL history. Last season, back with the Patriots for one season, he started the first five games of the season before rookie Drake Maye took over. He went 1-4 and went on to play in eight games. He completed 59.0% of his passes for 826 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Jacoby Brissett 2025 contract details, cap hit He signed a two-year, $12.5 million deal to sign with the Cardinals in March. He received a $3.5 million signing bonus and will make $3 million in salary, fully guaranteed. He can earn up to $510,000 in per-game roster bonuses. His contract has a $5.1 million cap hit in 2025. Questions he faces, roster outlook Brissett doesn't really face any questions this offseason. He comes in with a clear role, to back up Kyler Murray. The Cardinals want to compete this year, and in the case that Murray gets hurt, they want someone steady who can come in for him. Brissett has that track record. Brissett is who he is. As for making the roster, this isn't a situation like last year when the Cardinals traded for Desmond Ridder and he and Clayton Tune battled for the backup spot, which Tune eventually won. Brissett is the clear No. 2 on the roster, even if there is "competition." His guaranteed salary indicates that the Cardinals expect him to make the roster and be Murray's backup. Jacoby Brissett salary, contract details, cap hit with Arizona Cardinals

The Arizona Cardinals made more of a commitment than they have in the past for a backup quarterback with the signing of Jacoby Brissett. We have the details to the two-year contract he signed to be Kyler Murray's backup. The well-traveled Brissett is entering his 10th NFL season and the Cardinals will be his sixth different team in six years starting in 2020 when he was with the Indianapolis Colts. Since then, it's been the Miami Dolphins, Cleveland Browns, Washington Commanders and New England Patriots. There was interest in Brissett in 2023 after Jonathan Gannon was hired as head coach, but a deal could not be made and Brissett was signed by the Commanders to a 1-year, $8 million contract with $7.5 million guaranteed. Colt McCoy's elbow injury limited him throughout the offseason, and when it was decided he wouldn't be the starter at the beginning of the season because of Kyler Murray's continuing ACL rehab, a trade was made for Joshua Dobbs late in the summer. Last year, there was again interest in Brissett, but he went to the Patriots on another 1-year, $8 million contract, but with $6.5 million guaranteed. The Cardinals acquired Desmond Ridder in a trade from the Atlanta Falcons, but he was cut at the end of training camp, was signed to the practice squad before being signed by the Las Vegas Raiders on Oct. 22. He is currently a free agent after not being tendered by the Raiders as a restricted free agent. The Cardinals got serious this time around with Brissett. He was quickly signed last week to a 2-year, $12.5 million contract with $6.5 million guaranteed, not $8 million as originally reported. The full guaranteed money includes a $3.5 million signing bonus along with his $3 million base salary for 2025. There is $1.5 million guaranteed for injury only at signing and it becomes fully guaranteed at some point in March, 2026, when his salary is $4.88 million. There are $30,000 per-game roster bonuses each year for a max total of $510,000 plus $50,000 workout bonuses each year. The salary-cap charge is $5.31 million in 2025 and $7.19 million in 2026. For the 10 signed players with published contract details (Brissett, Dalvin Tomlinson, Josh Sweat, Baron Browning, Mykal Walker, L.J. Collier, Evan Brown, Akeem Davis-Gaither, Joey Blount and Aaron Brewer) plus the 1-year restricted free-agent tender for Greg Dortch, the total cap hit this year is $44.152 million. We still do not have the official figures for additions Jake Curhan and Simi Fehoko along with re-signed players Kelvin Beachum and Zay Jones. 2 great NFL free agency moves by Arizona Cardinals they hope they don't need

2 great NFL free agency moves by Arizona Cardinals they hope they don't need Two of the Arizona Cardinals' moves in free agency were for players that ideally won't have to play much in 2025. The Arizona Cardinals have been busy in NFL free agency. They have added players on big contracts, re-signed players to modest contracts, added players with some upside and improved the depth with some small ones. Their biggest moves were adding linebacker Josh Sweat, defensive lineman Dalvin Tomlinson and quarterback Jacoby Brissett. Two players they signed were great decisions, but in a perfect world in 2025, they won't be needed. The following are the Cardinals' best two free agency moves that hopefully they never need. No. 1: QB Jacoby Brissett The Cardinals spent big money on a backup quarterback, signing the nine-year vet to a two-year, $12.5 million deal. It is the most they have ever spent on a backup quarterback. Brissett is experienced, smart, reliable and rarely turns the ball over. They are in good shape if Kyler Murray has to come out of a game or miss a start or two. However, it would be ideal if Murray simply stays healthy all season. The ideal situation would Brissett never needing to play significant snaps. No. 2: OT Kelvin Beachum Beachum gets a one-year deal to return worth up to $4.5 million. He was indispensable last season, as he ended up starting 12 games because of injuries to starting tackles Jonah Williams and Paris Johnson. Not only did he start, he played well. But in 2025, the ideal scenario is that Johnson plays every game at left tackle and Williams stays healthy at right tackle. Re-signing Beachum was a great move, but hopefully he only needs to play special teams or as a tackle eligible.
