Call the Midwife's Helen George confirmed in line-up for new "wildly entertaining" ITV series
Call the Midwife star Helen George has been confirmed for a new "wildly entertaining" series from ITV. Titled SHARK! Celebrity Infested Waters, the new entertainment show will challenge a group of ocean-fearing celebrities to face nature's most terrifying underwater predator – sharks. Confirming the line-up today, ITV revealed that Ade Adepitan, Sir Lenny Henry, Ross Noble, Dougie Poynter, Lucy Punch, and Rachel Riley will be joining George on the show. Set to coincide with the 50th anniversary of Steven Spielberg's Jaws, the show is described as an "adrenaline-fueled, challenge-heavy journey in the Bahamas". Each celebrity will be tasked with diving with a different species of shark, with each breed getting bigger and more dangerous with each turn. Related: Call the Midwife responds as Olly Rix makes shock remarks about exit: "We do not accept this" The show will take place on Bimini, the Bahamas island, which is home to around 10 different types of shark including Bull sharks, Hammerheads and Tiger sharks. Speaking about the show, Karen Plumb, Head of Factual Entertainment at Plimsoll Productions, said: "The team at Plimsoll is uniquely positioned to pioneer this format that blends conservation with wildly entertaining pop culture. "We're constantly looking for innovative approaches to wildlife storytelling and are certain that our fish-out-of-water spin – delivering 50 years after Jaws – will transform the world's perception of these critical predators before it's too late." Related: Best streaming services As well as swimming with sharks, the celebrities will also "face fear inducing challenges" along the way while learning about the role sharks play in our ecosystem and in the oceans. Per the press release, the show hopes to provide a new perspective on the misunderstood creatures, and will see the group of celebrities learn about the predator's "valuable place on the food chain and in our ecosystem, recognizing that a world devoid of these notoriously terrifying creatures is downright frightening". SHARK! Celebrity Infested Waters is coming soon to ITV1, ITVX, STV and STV Player. Digital Spy's first print magazine is here! Emmerdale scraps early ITVX episode - here's why fans can't stream early on Wednesday
Emmerdale has scrapped the early ITVX release for Wednesday's (28 May) episode, with fans excited for the developments. The next instalment of the ITV soap will see Aaron Dingle and John Sugden tie the knot after weeks of anticipation, though one can expect it won't go completely swimmingly given the nature of soap storytelling. In a scheduling shake-up, the broadcaster confirmed via their social media channels that the instalment won't be uploaded to streaming service ITVX at 7am like most episodes, with viewers instead having to wait until the episode airs at 7.30pm on ITV1. "FYI: Emmerdale will not be available to stream tomorrow (Wed 28th) at 7am on ITVX," read the caption on the Instagram post. "So we'll see you all at 7.30pm on ITV1 instead, yeah? You bring the biscuits and we'll make the brews (we'll try to not spill any tea 👀)🫖" The post, which included a photo of Aaron and John in their wedding attire, received a comment from Danny Miller, with the actor - who debuted as Aaron in 2008 - jokingly writing: "What?!!!!!!!!!!" Related: "@danny_b_miller so annoying x" wrote one fan in response, with another adding: "@danny_b_miller that's my reaction like what the heck?????😂" Several other fans also joked with the actor, calling him a "tease". "It must be exciting if we have to wait," remarked one fan on the post, with another commenting: "Ooh exciting tea 🫖 incoming." "Run for your life Aaron! (literally lol)" quipped one fan as they referenced John's murky character, while another said they were "excited" for the episode. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Emmerdale (@emmerdale) Related: While fans will have to wait a few hours longer for the instalment, we can be sure that it will be a dramatic 30 minutes, with John - whose secrets have gradually been unveiled over the past few weeks - having to put on a strong façade under increasing pressure. While specific details of the episode remain under wraps, Miller did tease aspects of the instalment during an appearance on Loose Women, sharing: "What I will say is there are some surprises… You'll just have to wait and see." Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX. Read more Emmerdale spoilers on our dedicated homepage Digital Spy's first print magazine is here! New "taut and twisting" revenge thriller debuts with 100% Rotten Tomatoes rating
New thriller It Was Just An Accident has premiered to a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. This is the latest film from director Jafar Panahi, who was arrested by the Iranian government back in 2010 and banned from leaving the country or making films, yet has continued to direct and act. The film follows a series of events that begin with an accidental running over of a dog, and spirals into much darker territory that references his time incarcerated. Following It Was Just An Accident's premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, which Panahi attended for the first time since 2003, over a dozen critics have published their reviews online, and all of them are positive. Related: Best film and TV tours for 2025 Here's what some of the reviews have said: "It Was Just an Accident is a taut and twisting revenge thriller loaded with heavyweight ethical quandaries. It is heartbreakingly explicit about what the well-drawn characters have suffered, but it asks whether they can ever be justified in using the same methods." "Putting aside the self-reflexive storytelling that has marked much of his work since he was first arrested in 2010, Panahi's latest feature is a straightforward 24-hour narrative staged with his usual attention to realistic detail, and backed by a terrific ensemble cast. Subtly plotted like a good thriller, the movie slowly but surely builds into a stark condemnation of abusive power and its long-lasting effects." Related: "For his latest film, Jafar Panahi drew inspiration from the stories of the fellow inmates he met during his seven-month-long second stint in prison. There's a seam of pitch black gallows humour running through the picture, and moments of absurdist hilarity. But mostly, it's an impassioned and forthright condemnation of the regime and of the men who do its bidding." Related: "It's a beautifully-written and executed work, one of Panahi's most formally straightforward yet powerful, gripping and generous. As the clock ticks on... the messiness of life makes itself felt and the simple task at hand becomes more complex as a broader picture of their captor emerges." "Jokes, though, are subtle and pass quickly; Panahi is interested in people, but in this case he's measuring an oppressive society that has bred and gathered an army of those who hate their oppressors. Moral ambiguity has always been a fertile ground for the director, and sharpening his tone from other, calmer films casts that ambiguity on sharp relief." It Was Just An Accident will be released in the UK and Ireland by Mubi, although it does not have a release window just yet. Digital Spy's first print magazine is here! Sarah Lancashire's "crowdpleasing" British movie gets new UK streaming home
Sarah Lancashire's British movie Yesterday has found a new streaming home in the UK. Directed by Danny Boyle, the 2019 film stars former EastEnders actor Himesh Patel as singer-songwriter Jack Malik, who wakes up in a world in which The Beatles never existed after he's involved in a bus accident during a freak worldwide power outage. Jack struggles with the moral dilemma of becoming famous from performing Beatles songs as his own, with only other people who remember The Fab Four being Liz (Lancashire) and Leo (Justin Edwards). Fans in the UK who want to revisit Yesterday or watch it for the for the first time can now stream the movie on BBC iPlayer. Digital Spy gave Yesterday four stars, with our review describing it as "crowdpleasing" and "heartwarming". Related: Best streaming services As well as Patel, Lancashire and Edwards, Yesterday stars Lily James and Joel Fry, with cameos from the likes of James Corden and Ed Sheeran. Director Danny Boyle previously revealed that Sheeran wasn't the first choice for the movie, with the filmmaker originally wanting to cast Coldplay's Chris Martin. "In the first script, it was written as Chris Martin, from Coldplay," the director told Entertainment Weekly after the film's release. "[Screenwriter] Richard Curtis knew Chris because they'd done something for Red Nose Day for Comic Relief, but he also knew Ed because they live near each other in Suffolk." Related: He continued: "We had a very fun moment with Ed where we said, 'You'd be so good for this, you're our first choice. We can't think of anyone [else],' and he goes, 'Hang on, you've already asked Chris Martin.' "He's very funny. He doesn't mind having fun poked at him, which obviously the film does. But he comes with that as well. So he remorselessly teased us about being second choice to Chris Martin." Yesterday is now available to stream on BBC iPlayer. "Deadly boring": Nicole Kidman's returning show debuts with poor Rotten Tomatoes score
The second season of Nicole Kidman's satirical drama Nine Perfect Strangers has landed a meagre Rotten Tomatoes score following its first reviews. The Big Little Lies star returns as mysterious guru Masha Dmitrichenko, who invites nine new strangers to join a transformational wellness retreat in the Austrian Alps. "Over the course of a week, she takes them to the brink. Will they make it? Will she? Masha is willing to try anything in the interest of healing everyone involved, including herself," the official synopsis reads. Despite its star-studded cast - including Murray Bartlett, Annie Murphy, Christine Baranski, Henry Golding, Mark Strong and Dolly de Leon - season two has struggled to win over critics. Ahead of its debut in the US tomorrow and UK on 22 May, the season has landed a score of just 38% on Rotten Tomatoes from eight reviews at the time of writing. Related: Best streaming services AV Club brutally branded season two as "deadly boring", adding that the new episodes "lack focus, a tight pace, intriguing characters, and, most of all, the self-aware campiness that made Nine Perfect Strangers somewhat amusing when it debuted four years ago". Here's what some of the other critics have been saying so far: "Though the eight episodes are peppered with twists — including one late reveal that feels recycled from season one — Nine Perfect Strangers forgot a key ingredient for its storytelling smoothie: Fun." "It looks glamorous and talks the prestige TV talk, but it's a hollow, self-indulgent emotional vacuum." Related: "Nine Perfect Strangers season two has its fair share of effective twists and even more excellent performances, though it can feel limited by its short episode count and the constraints of its premise and genre." "There are thrills to be mined in a show that's as deep as a puddle of champagne, but, like a microdosed drink, the aftereffects are minimal." Nine Perfect Strangers season two premieres 21 May on Hulu in the US. In the UK, the new season starts streaming on Prime Video on 22 May. Season one is available on the same platforms.
