Beloved twisty detective drama that's "one of ITV's most-watched" confirms July return with first look
Karen Pirie, the beloved detective drama from ITV, has confirmed its return with several first-look images.
The three-part series, which premiered in 2022, followed the titular character (Lauren Lyle), a detective sergeant who is placed in charge of a 25-year-old cold case involving the unsolved murder of a barmaid.
After becoming one of ITV's "most-watched" shows, the broadcaster renewed the series for a second season, and fans now finally have a month to mark in the calendar after it was confirmed that Karen Pirie will return to screens in July with a trio of two-hour episodes.
The announcement also came with some first-look images, showcasing the titular character in her new role as detective inspector. Fans can also get a glimpse of Chris Jenks, who reprises his role as "loveable sidekick" DC Jason Murray.
Based on Val McDermid's A Darker Domain, the second season sees Karen "seemingly given the authority she has long been fighting for". Just as she acclimatises to her "powerful" new role, the inspector is assigned an "infamous" unsolved case that will put her under "intense scrutiny".

The 30-year-old case, which is said to have "confounded investigators" and "intrigued the public", concerns the disappearance of a "charming" young heiress and her two-year-old son, with the pair vanishing after ransom demands from their kidnappers were not met.
A twist comes, however, as the body of a man linked to the original kidnap is discovered. With the first new piece of evidence in decades, Karen assembles an "unbeatable team" for the "biggest challenge" of their careers.
Facing pressure from her boss, the media and "sinister" forces, Karen delves deeper into the "internationally renowned" case, discovering "political grudges" and "painful secrets" as it becomes increasingly apparent that the "past is far from dead".

The return of the series will delight fans and critics alike, with the first season of the detective drama currently boasting an impressive approval rating of 91% on Rotten Tomatoes from 11 reviews.
The site's critical consensus noted that the "clever and twisty" series "revamped" the "traditional grizzle detective procedural", while The Independent praised the show for telling its story in a "refreshingly cohesive" manner.
Karen Pirie will return on ITV in July.

Australian thriller packed with twists that has fans hooked is now streaming free in the UK
A twisty thriller dubbed "disturbing" and "gripping" by fans is finally available to stream for free in the UK. The Secrets She Keeps, starring Jessica De Gouw and Laura Carmichael, follows lonely pregnant woman Agatha (Carmichael) who meets successful online influencer Meghan (De Gouw), who also happens to be pregnant and is due to give birth around the same time. They are led down a dark and dangerous path when Agatha becomes obsessed with Meghan's seemingly perfect life and the secrets they both share. Based on the psychological thriller novel by Michael Robotham, the thriller series first aired in 2020 on 10Play in Australia before a second series hit Paramount+ two years later. For TV fans in the UK, all 12 episodes across season one and two are now available to stream for free on Channel 4 - so cancel your weekend plans and settle in. Related: Those who have seen The Secrets She Keeps said they binged it all and were left hooked, with one IMDb user calling the show "disturbing" while another said it was "a tense, gripping watch". While many praised the performances of De Gouw and Carmichael, others branded the narrative "predictable" in many ways despite its "unexpected" twists. The Secrets She Keeps currently holds an impressive 85% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with saying in its review: "A very watchable, albeit slightly shallow, exploration of how femininity and motherhood intertwine and toxify." Paste Magazine added: "Without performances as layered and emotionally sound as the ones Carmichael and De Gouw give, The Secrets She Keeps would be little more than the aforementioned pulpy ride. It's still pretty cockamamie, but in a way that is also fully believable." Related: The Guardian added: "The bedrock of the show is credible, serious drama, though this is undercut from time to time by pulpy genre elements more befitting old-school Ozploitation thrillers - such as 1979's Snapshot." Speaking to Radio Times, Downton Abbey star Carmichael opened up about the drastic difference between her role as Agatha and as Edith Crawley in the smash hit period drama. "You can't control what other people think of you," she says. "I enjoy a challenge, and I'm keen to try on different hats. When you do something for a long time, things become comfortable – you want to push yourself. "It's been such a gift being in Downton. It's opened so many doors. If another period drama came across my desk... if I loved the script, I wouldn't be too nervous of entering that world. But at the moment I'm drawn to things that feel different." Charles joined by David Beckham and Meryl Streep to celebrate award winners
The King has been joined by a host of stars to celebrate the achievements of young talent and senior figures recognised by his foundation. Charles met David Beckham, Stanley Tucci and Penny Lancaster, all King's Foundation ambassadors, alongside friends of the charitable body, Hollywood stars Kate Winslet and Meryl Streep, at the St James's Palace awards ceremony. Prizes including Young Entrepreneur and Advocate of the Year were presented by the celebrities including the King Charles III Harmony Award, recognising a long-term commitment to the foundation's mission of creating a world where people, places and the planet can live in harmony. Charles met his foundation's famous supporters and award winners before touring stands showcasing the charity's work, and Winslet smiled as she told him: 'Don't worry, I'll be all in – I've got your back.' Celebrity chef Raymond Blanc hailed the King for his campaigning over the decades on issues like communities, sustainability and traditional crafts that underpin the foundation, which is celebrating its 35th anniversary. His ITV series Raymond Blanc's Royal Kitchen Gardens took him to palaces like Hampton Court and Hillsborough, as well as Highgrove House and the Castle of Mey – places Charles calls home. Blanc, a foundation ambassador, said after meeting Charles: 'I think what the King has done is extraordinary. He's done it for many, many years – from the 1970s, about the same time I arrived in England – and my values are his values. 'There's a deep belief in connecting human beings with communities, with agriculture, with sustainability, management of waste, management of energy, and he has done it for the last 45, 50 years.' Speaking about filming at the King's Scottish retreat, the Castle of Mey, which once belonged to his grandmother the Queen Mother, Blanc added: 'I really believe he got all his values seeing his grandma in this beautiful space. 'So natural, close to the sea, at the tip of Scotland where there was such a reservoir of natural things.' Blanc's words were echoed by Penny Lancaster who praised the monarch for creating the awards and highlighting the needs of the planet throughout his adult life. She added: 'The King may have been accused of hugging trees and people thinking he was mad when he started talking about the environment all that time ago, but he was at the forefront then and now has been proved right with everything he said and now we're all just trying to play catch up. 'I really recognise the beauty in the way he is trying to get us on board with his knowledge and if we can pass that on to the younger generation, and save some of the traditional skills like we've seen with these winners today, we can all be a part of making a difference.' The King's Foundation, previously known as The Prince's Foundation following an amalgamation of Charles' charities which stretch back to 1990, aims to 'advocate for the change His Majesty wants to see in the world'. The Emerging Talent prize was presented by Beckham, the former England football captain rumoured to be knighted soon, to Emily Hurst who has shown exceptional talent and commitment while on a King's Foundation programme. She recently completed the Chanel and King's Foundation Metiers d'Art Fellowship in Millinery, based at Highgrove Gardens after she had become fascinated with the heritage craft of straw braiding and began learning to produce hats from the material. She said: 'Working at Highgrove was absolutely the best place to be, surrounded by so much inspiration from His Majesty's garden and learning from some of the best milliners with country, I'm so incredibly honoured.'
