Talks between the team and Cam Thomas have not moved forward in the way many expected. While several NBA free agents are still waiting on new contracts this summer, the situation in Brooklyn has taken an interesting turn. Brooklyn Net's current stance on Cam Thomas On Thursday, August 8, NBA insider Jake Fischer from Yahoo Sports reported that the Brooklyn Nets are not pushing hard to sign 23-year-old Cam Thomas to a long-term deal. Thomas, who joined the NBA in 2021, is now leaning toward taking the Nets' $6 million offer for the 2025–26 season. If he does, he will be free to choose any team he wants in the summer of 2026. Fischer wrote, 'Brooklyn has not made an aggressive effort to retain Thomas on any long-term deal… Sources also say Thomas is showing an increasing interest in playing out next season on a $6 million qualifier for the right to enjoy true free agency next summer.' Thomas has been a consistent scoring option when given minutes, averaging 24.0 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 3.8 assists last season. He shot 43.8% from the field and 34.9% from three-point range. Despite these numbers, teams around the league have shown little urgency to secure his services with a big-money deal. How the market and Brooklyn Net's roster impact Cam Thomas Free agency across the NBA has slowed this August. Players like Jonathan Kuminga, Quentin Grimes, and Josh Giddey are also waiting for significant offers. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Susan Boyle Is Now so Thin and Looks Beautiful! Undo For Thomas, the Nets' salary cap flexibility plays a big role in his current position. Keith Smith of Spotrac noted that Brooklyn is the only team with notable cap space left, which means they have no financial pressure to rush into a deal. 'Because they are the only team with cap space, Brooklyn has no reason to move on a new deal for Thomas that they don't deem a fair value,' Smith said. NBA analyst Zach Lowe has also pointed out that some view Thomas as an 'empty calories' scorer - a player who can put up points but may not impact winning as much as expected. However, others believe that the label is unfair, given his improvement as a passer and his ability to score at all three levels. If Thomas accepts the qualifying offer, he will play one more year in Brooklyn before exploring the open market without restrictions in July 2026.
