The Brooklyn Nets are facing an important decision with one of their young scoring guards. Talks between the team and Cam Thomas have not moved forward in the way many expected. While several
NBA
free agents are still waiting on new contracts this summer, the situation in Brooklyn has taken an interesting turn.
Brooklyn Net's current stance on Cam Thomas
On Thursday, August 8, NBA insider Jake Fischer from Yahoo Sports reported that the Brooklyn Nets are not pushing hard to sign 23-year-old Cam Thomas to a long-term deal. Thomas, who joined the NBA in 2021, is now leaning toward taking the Nets' $6 million offer for the 2025–26 season. If he does, he will be free to choose any team he wants in the summer of 2026.
Fischer wrote, 'Brooklyn has not made an aggressive effort to retain Thomas on any long-term deal… Sources also say Thomas is showing an increasing interest in playing out next season on a $6 million qualifier for the right to enjoy true free agency next summer.'
Thomas has been a consistent scoring option when given minutes, averaging 24.0 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 3.8 assists last season. He shot 43.8% from the field and 34.9% from three-point range. Despite these numbers, teams around the league have shown little urgency to secure his services with a big-money deal.
How the market and Brooklyn Net's roster impact Cam Thomas
Free agency across the NBA has slowed this August. Players like Jonathan Kuminga, Quentin Grimes, and Josh Giddey are also waiting for significant offers.

For Thomas, the Nets' salary cap flexibility plays a big role in his current position.
Keith Smith of Spotrac noted that Brooklyn is the only team with notable cap space left, which means they have no financial pressure to rush into a deal. 'Because they are the only team with cap space, Brooklyn has no reason to move on a new deal for Thomas that they don't deem a fair value,' Smith said.
NBA analyst Zach Lowe has also pointed out that some view Thomas as an 'empty calories' scorer - a player who can put up points but may not impact winning as much as expected. However, others believe that the label is unfair, given his improvement as a passer and his ability to score at all three levels.

The Nets' crowded backcourt could also affect his role in the upcoming season. If Thomas accepts the qualifying offer, he will play one more year in Brooklyn before exploring the open market without restrictions in July 2026.

Australia's unbeaten T20I streak ends – Where does it rank among the longest runs?

South Africa's Kagiso Rabada, centre, is congratulated by teammates (Jono Searle/AAPImage via AP) Australia's nine-match T20I winning streak came to an end in dramatic fashion on Tuesday as Dewald Brevis powered South Africa to a 53-run win in Darwin to level the three-match series at 1-1. The Aussies, led by Mitchell Marsh , had been in red-hot form. They entered this series off the back of a 5-0 sweep against West Indies and a victory in the first T20I over South Africa, taking their streak to nine straight wins — the longest in their T20I history. The 22-year-old smashed an unbeaten 125 off 56 balls, breaking Faf du Plessis' South African record for the highest T20I score. White House to 'definitely' host UFC fight night on 4 July, says Dana White

Dana White (Images via Getty Images) The White House is set to host a mixed martial arts (MMA) event on July 4 next year, coinciding with the 250th anniversary of the United States' founding, UFC president Dana White confirmed on Tuesday. 'It is definitely going to happen. I talked to him last night — 'him' being the president — and I'm flying out there at the end of this month. I'm going to sit down and walk him through all the plans and the renderings, and we're going to start deciding what he wants and doesn't want,' White told CBS, as quoted by AFP. UFC bouts take place inside an eight-sided cage, 'The Octagon,' where fighters use a range of techniques from various martial arts disciplines including boxing, kickboxing, wrestling, and jiu-jitsu. White, a long-time supporter of the president, revealed that the president's daughter, Ivanka Trump, will also be involved in planning the Independence Day spectacle. 'When (Trump) called me and asked me to do it, he said: 'I want Ivanka in the middle of this,'' White said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Secret Lives of the Romanovs — the Last Rulers of Imperial Russia! Known for its no-holds-barred nature, with only a few prohibited moves, the sport has drawn both widespread popularity and controversy. Critics, including medical professionals, have expressed concern over the potential for brain injuries due to repeated head strikes, even as MMA gains greater mainstream acceptance. Poll Do you think hosting an MMA event at the White House is appropriate? Yes, it's a unique celebration. No, it's not suitable for the White House. President Trump has attended major UFC events in the past, often receiving star-like reception from fans. Bringing the sport to the White House on such a symbolic date is expected to draw significant attention both for its novelty and its political undertones.
