Watch: Vikings' Max Brosmer connects for deep ball touchdown in joint practice
The Vikings' backup quarterback competition has been heating up ever since the start of OTAs months ago. It continued into minicamp and now in training camp, with the preseason showing that the team has some needs when it comes to finding a consistent presence at the position. One of the players attempting to make a splash and earn a role is UDFA Max Brosmer. The former Minnesota Golden Gopher came in to be what many expected to be a camp arm, but he has shown he can be more than that. His latest work came on Wednesday during joint practices with the Patriots when Brosmer was able to hit one of his targets downfield for a big touchdown against their stiff secondary. J.J. McCarthy is now shut down for the preseason, which frees up some reps for Brosmer and others to carve out their role. Brosmer lit up the Texans in the second half of the first preseason game, so if he can do that again against the Patriots, he could be in contention for a roster spot.

Minnesota Vikings Preseason Week 1: Winners and losers against Texans
The Minnesota Vikings got off on the right foot in their first preseason game of the 2025 season. They defeated the Houston Texans 20-10, showing promise in each phase of the team. Who impressed in the win, and who fell short in their first live-game action of the season? Let's look at three winners and losers from Saturday's contest. Winners Murphy missed most of the 2024 season after being a high-priority undrafted free agent signing after the draft. He made his presence felt against the Texans, registering 1.5 sacks on only 30 snaps (19 pass-rush). The Vikings have an opening behind Dallas Turner as Edge4, and Murphy may have the inside track on the role after Saturday. His 89.4 PFF grade led all Vikings. The Vikings trade for Jordan Mason to give themselves a strong 1-2 punch at running back, but the depth behind those two has been questioned. Scott, a third-year running back out of Maine, threw his hat into the ring to become RB3. He ran seven times for 50 yards, including a run that set up a Sam Howell quarterback sneak to cap off a 94-yard touchdown drive. The former Gopher didn't look like an undrafted rookie free agent making his first preseason appearance. Brosmer completed 5/8 passes for 47 yards. He had a touchdown pass to Miles Price one play after another touchdown pass to Dontae Fleming was overturned. Brosmer was composed and found passes into tight windows, including one pass to receiver Silas Bolden that would have gained at least 20 yards had it not been dropped. Losers Chandler's five runs for five yards hurt even more because of Scott's success. It appears that Chandler's spot on the roster could be in jeopardy if he continues to struggle, as he's never had a firm hold on any particular role since being drafted in 2022. If Scott continues to produce, that makes it tougher to justify keeping Chandler. Like Chandler, Rypien's unproductive day is compounded by the success of those behind him on the depth chart. Rypien was only 1/4 passing for six yards and took two sacks. He's a career backup, and if the Vikings believe that Brosmer offers any upside at all, moving on from Rypien to open a spot at QB3 for the former Gopher will become more and more likely. Bolden is an undrafted free agent who got his first NFL action on Saturday. He had one punt return for eight yards, which was fine, but he caught one pass for three yards, including a brutal drop from Brosmer that had Kevin O'Connell visibly reacting on the sideline. It's still early for Bolden, and his chances to make the roster improved after Rondale Moore left the game with an apparent lower body injury, but he has to make opportunities when they present themselves.

Broncos showing interest in another quarterback prospect
The Denver Broncos continue to scout third-string quarterback candidates leading up to the 2025 NFL draft. After previously meeting with Canadian quarterback Taylor Elgersma at Buffalo's pro day and hosting NDSU's Cam Miller on a pre-draft visit, the Broncos have had multiple virtual pre-draft Zoom calls with Minnesota's Max Brosmer, according to the Denver Post's Luca Evans. Brosmer (6-2, 217 pounds) spent the first five years of his college career at the FCS level, playing 36 games at New Hampshire. He transferred to Minnesota ahead of his final year of eligibility in 2024. Advertisement The 24-year-old prospect completed 66.5% of his passes for 2,828 yards and 18 touchdowns against six interceptions in 13 games with the Golden Gophers. He also rushed for five touchdowns last fall, but Brosmer is not a particularly mobile prospect. Brosmer is projected as a late-round or undrafted free agent prospect. If he lands with the Broncos, Brosmer could get an opportunity to compete for the QB3 job behind starter Bo Nix and primary backup Jarrett Stidham in 2025. The NFL draft will be held in Wisconsin from April 24-26. Denver holds seven picks this year. Heart, Love & Soul honors the loving heart of Sister Beth
Sister Beth Brosmer recalled a day when a man who stood about 6 feet tall walked into Heart, Love & Soul in Niagara Falls wearing a thin nylon windbreaker on a day when the temperature outside was just 7 degrees. Her instincts kicked in and she went to the Ontario Avenue food pantry's clothes closet to find the gentleman a proper winter coat. When she handed it to him, tears welled up in his eyes and he asked her a simple question. 'He very quietly said, 'Can I give you a hug?' ' Brosmer recalled. 'With that hug, I felt like I'm good for another five years,' she added. 'I will always carry the memory of that hug close to my heart.' Over the course of a decade serving as the executive director of Heart, Love & Soul, a hunger relief and social services agency that has served the Falls community since 1983, Brosmer had her share of memorable moments when her work and the work of the organization made big differences in the lives of those in need. During a ceremony on Friday honoring her work with the organization, Brosmer confessed to a group of dozens of friends and colleagues that she had her share of doubts and struggles too. She admitted there were times when she found it difficult to overcome her own judgments while dealing with guests who were unruly, unable to follow rules or overcome by their addictions or other habits that prevented them from leading more productive lives. 'I found the best of myself and the worst of myself,' she said. Through it all, Brosmer said she considered the fullness of her experience, with all of its ups and downs, to be a real blessing. 'Putting my judgments aside was a challenge but one that brought me closer to Jesus and to our guests,' she added. Brosmer oversaw Heart, Love & Soul as its executive director from 2010 to 2020. She was instrumental in efforts to grow the organization's offerings through the development of Daybreak, a program that seeks to improve the quality of life for residents offering them increased access to services ranging from job and life skills training to free haircuts, shower facilities and laundry services. Heart, Love & Soul's current Executive Director Mark Baetzhold said celebrating Brosmer's legacy on Valentine's Day was fitting as it was a perfect day to honor someone who dedicated so much of her heart to helping others. The day — Feb. 14 — also marked 21 years since the food pantry and social services center moved into its current location, 939 Ontario Ave. The move followed 21 years of service from the organization's previous site on Pierce Avenue. 'It was sister Beth's ability to love and make someone feel loved that won the hearts of so many people, from guests to donors to elected officials and non-profit partners,' Baetzhold said. 'We are grateful for you Sister Beth and thank God for the blessing that you have been for so many.' During Friday's celebration, Heart, Love & Soul board members and staff unveiled a portrait of Brosmer that was painted by artist Maria Laurendi. Board President Suzan Ben read from the plaque that will accompany the painting inside the shelter, saying, in part: 'Sister Beth's example continues to inspire us to participate in ongoing work of peace and justice.' A representative from the office of U.S. Rep. Tim Kennedy was also on hand to read comments Kennedy read into the record on the House floor that honored Brosmer and recognized her years of contributions to Heart, Love & Soul. Mayor Robert Restaino presented a resolution in Brosmer's honor from his office and the Falls city council. While he said it's common in professional and public life to find good people and not-so-good people, Restaino said it's uncommon to find someone as universally loved and respected as Brosmer. 'You very rarely meet someone that you can say is actually a great person and Sister Beth is one of those great people,' Restaino said. 'If you look around you here and you see what this institution does for so many, you would agree with me that her intuition, sense of place and drive made everybody realize that rowing in the same direction we can get there a lot quicker.' Brosmer closed her remarks by crediting Baetzold and others who followed her in leadership and staffing roles at Heart, Love & Soul with continuing to meet the organization's core mission which is to nourish people in need — 'body, mind & soul.' 'They do this with faithful dedication, with gusto, with humor and with humility and this, my friends, warms my heart to the fullest measure,' Brosmer said. 'So to all of you, I say 'thank you.' Thank you for being here, for your ongoing support of the guests that come through our doors each day. You are a true blessing to so many,' she said. 'I do want to proclaim loudly that heart and soul remains in good hands,' she added.
