Broward Health cybersecurity director accused of possessing over 10,000 pictures, videos of child pornography, arrest documents show
The cybersecurity director of a prominent South Florida public health network is facing "abhorrent" accusations after he was allegedly found possessing thousands of computer files containing child porn. Arrest documents obtained by CBS News Miami revealed that 41-year-old Kevin Kull was arrested Friday and charged with 10 counts of possessing child pornography and one count of computer pornography after someone at his home found several devices containing "child erotica" earlier this month. According to a records search, Kull was the director of cybersecurity for Broward Health. In a statement from the public health network, a Broward Health spokesperson said it is "aware of and appalled by the allegations made against Mr. Kull," and immediately suspended him from his role and is fully cooperating with the investigation. "The alleged behavior is abhorrent and in direct conflict with our values," the spokesperson said. "We are mindful of the individuals and families who may be impacted by this deeply troubling situation and offer our sincere support to any who might be affected." In his bond hearing Saturday, the court found probable cause and ordered Kull to be held on a $105,000 bond -- $10,000 for counts 1 through 10, and then an additional $5,000 for the 11th count. He was also given a Level 1 pre-trial release with an electronic monitor and was not allowed to have access to any devices with internet. Around 5 p.m. on July 7, a Broward Sheriff's Office detective responded to the Deerfield Beach District Office regarding an investigation into Kull. According to the arrest documents, Kull still resided at his home at the time of the investigation, but an unidentified associate had access to his home because they were preparing to place it on the market. While organizing the home on June 26, the associate found two SD cards, two hard drives and a cellphone, containing what she believed to be child pornography, the arrest documents said. On the evening of July 8, a judge signed and approved a search warrant for the found devices and the detective reviewed the forensic extraction the following day. According to the arrest documents, the detective found a total of 10,861 images and videos across the devices, where there were several showing Kull and approximately 7,891 images depicting "child erotica" that featured young girls between the ages of 5 and 12 in "sexually suggestive poses." There were also several images and videos taken from a "discrete location" of children at a public pool and even several videos of Kull engaging in sexual acts with a sex doll that was approximately three feet tall, the arrest documents said. The arrest documents continued, saying that the forensics report found another 178 files of animated child pornography that depicted children as young as toddlers and another image that had "a list of websites that are known to have taboo pornography." The detective also found 10 other files that depicted child porn with girls between the ages of 5 and 15 engaging in sexual acts. After reviewing the forensics report, the detective applied for a search warrant for Kull's home. On Friday morning, BSO served the search warrant and found Kull at his residence, where he invoked his Miranda rights, the arrest documents said. While searching Kull's vehicle, investigators found a "severely damaged" laptop in the trunk that appeared to have "pried open and struck with a hammer multiple times" and with its hard drives removed. The arrest documents said investigators were unable to find those drives. However, based on the previously reviewed evidence, Kull was arrested and charged accordingly and booked into BSO Main Jail.

Fort Lauderdale police officer injured trying save dog during apartment fire
A Fort Lauderdale firefighter was taken to the hospital after she rushed into a burning apartment to try and save a dog. According to Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue, the fire broke out in the kitchen of the apartment on NW 13 Terrace at NW 8 Street. Fort Lauderdale police were the first to arrive and they were met by two children who said their dog Rocky was still inside. An officer rushed in to try and save him, but she was overcome by the smoke and had to get out. Moments later, firefighters arrived. They went inside and quickly put out the fire while saving Rocky. The officer was taken to Broward Health Medical Center where she was treated for smoke inhalation. The children's mother, who was working at the time, said she received a terrifying phone call from her kids. "My daughter was screaming saying 'The house is on fire, the house is on fire'. I'm like, did you guys call 911? (They kept saying) the house is on fire and we can't find the dog," she said. "I'm just grateful everybody is good, everybody is alive and the dog is alive because they were worried about the dog." Fort Lauderdale firefighters said Rocky appeared to be fine, but was taken to a veterinarian to get checked out. The children were unharmed. They said the fire was mostly contained to the kitchen and since they were able to put it out quickly, the apartment did not sustain a whole lot of damage. The Red Cross is assisting the family.

A 19-year-old man was arrested Sunday in connection with a shooting near an Airbnb in May that killed a woman from St. Lucie County, Fort Lauderdale Police said. About 4:30 a.m. May 19, a group of people 'were involved in a disturbance' that escalated into a physical fight in the 900 block of Southwest 16th Street, said Sgt. Officers found Zeigler lying in the road. She was pronounced dead at Broward Health Medical Center later that morning. Smith was detained during a traffic stop Sunday and arrested on an active warrant, Soika said. Florida Blue, Broward Health hit standstill over costs. What it means for patients
Thousands of people who have health insurance through Florida Blue may find themselves paying a heftier bill the next time they seek care at Broward Health, one of three public hospital systems in South Florida and one of the largest in the country. As of July 1, Broward Health is no longer an in-network provider for Florida Blue, ending a decades-long agreement with one of the largest insurers in the state. Florida Blue made the announcement this week, stating that Broward Health 'has chosen to leave the Florida Blue network' after rate negotiations between the two organizations fell through. For Broward Health patients who have insurance through Florida Blue, that means they may need to find new doctors who are in the Florida Blue network to get cheaper — or covered — medical care. If not, they might find themselves paying a heftier bill for primary and specialty care at Broward Health, which is now an out-of-network provider for Florida Blue members. 'We are disappointed that Broward Health has chosen to leave our network of providers, and hope this is temporary,' Florida Blue said in a statement. 'Unfortunately, Broward Health's rate demands remain excessive and unsustainable, and would burden our community with much higher health care costs. We ask their senior leaders to return to the negotiating table and work with us in finding a reasonable solution that protects our members, preserves affordability, and works for everyone.' In a blog post for patients, Broward Health said that Florida Blue has 'historically undervalued the care our team members provide' and that its discussions with the health insurer were about 'fairness.' The public hospital system said it asked Florida Blue to reimburse its team at levels that are 'comparable' to what it reimburses other South Florida health care providers and the rates provided by other insurance companies for the same services. Florida Blue said it notified about 18,000 members in May about the situation, including patients who had received care at Broward Health in the last six months or who have a Broward Health primary care doctor. Broward Health, which mainly serves central and northern Broward County, is one of the 10 largest public health systems in the country, with five hospitals and more than 50 health centers and physician practices. It's one of two public hospital systems in Broward County, the other being Memorial Healthcare System, which mainly serves southern Broward. Who is affected? As of July 1, all Broward Health services, facilities, clinics and physicians will be impacted by the standstill between Broward Health and Florida Blue, which was previously known as Blue Cross Blue Shield. Patients affected by the stalled negotiations include those with 'commercial (employer-based), individual marketplace and Medicare Advantage' plans, according to Broward Health. The hospital system said Medicare Supplemental and Medigap plans would not be impacted. Florida Blue members can also still go to Broward Health for emergency care, as 'ER and emergency services are always covered at in-network cost share, even at out-of-network facilities,' according to Florida Blue. The health insurer said some patients may still be able to continue getting in-network care at Broward Health for a certain period of time under federal and state protections for continuity of care. This includes people who are pregnant or who are 'undergoing active treatment for serious and complex health conditions, or in post-operative care following surgery,' according to Florida Blue. Patients with questions can visit Florida Blue's website or call the number on the back of their member ID card for more info specific to their plan. This article will be updated.
