Arrest made in deadly shooting near Airbnb in Fort Lauderdale

Yahoo07-07-2025
A 19-year-old man was arrested Sunday in connection with a shooting near an Airbnb in May that killed a woman from St. Lucie County, Fort Lauderdale Police said.
About 4:30 a.m. May 19, a group of people 'were involved in a disturbance' that escalated into a physical fight in the 900 block of Southwest 16th Street, said Sgt. David Soika, a spokesperson for Fort Lauderdale Police.
A man, later identified as Larry Smith, pulled out a gun and shot 19-year-old Myrah Zeigler, of Fort Pierce, during the fight, Soika said. Officers found Zeigler lying in the road. She was pronounced dead at Broward Health Medical Center later that morning.
Smith was detained during a traffic stop Sunday and arrested on an active warrant, Soika said. Jail records show he was booked into the Broward Main Jail and faces one count of second-degree murder with a firearm.
The police department did not provide additional information Monday about the investigation that led to Smith's arrest. Court records were not available Monday afternoon.

Virginia State Police identify two victims killed in crash on I-64 in Augusta County

Virginia State Police have identified two people who were killed on Interstate 64 after a truck went off the roadway the morning of July 22 in Augusta County. A 2026 Freightliner TMA crash truck, used to protect workers and motorists in highway work zones, was eastbound on I-64. At approximately 6:19 a.m. at mile marker 89, police said the driver overcorrected, causing the truck to veer off the right side of the interstate. The truck went through a guardrail and down an embankment, striking a tree and overturning on its side. Both the driver and passenger in the truck died at the scene. The driver was identified as Georgeanna L. Hardesty, 51, of Iron Gate. The passenger was Sabrina L. Harris, 50, of Covington. Both were wearing seatbelts, police said. The crash remains under investigation. Multiple people killed in mass shooting incident at Bangkok market: police

Multiple people were shot and killed at a market in the Thai capital of Bangkok on Monday afternoon, police said. A post on the official Facebook page of the Royal Thai Police says there were at least six fatalities, including the gunman who took his own life. Photos show police on scene at the Or Tor Kor market in Bangkok, which sells agricultural produce and local food. The victims included four security guards and one woman, according to the Erawan Emergency Medical Center that monitors Bangkok hospitals. Monday's violence came against the backdrop of five days of violent border clashes between Thailand and its neighbor, Cambodia. Leaders on either side were meeting in Malaysia on Monday in an urgent effort to resolve the fighting. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said State Department officials were on the ground in Malaysia to assist in the peace talks. "Both President Trump and I remain engaged with our respective counterparts for each country and are monitoring the situation very closely," Rubio said in a statement. "We want this conflict to end as soon as possible." This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
