Dillon Gabriel Gets Good News After Browns Minicamp
Dillon Gabriel Gets Good News After Browns Minicamp originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Oregon Ducks just put up one of their most successful seasons in the program's history. Not only did they finish the regular season undefeated in their first year in the Big Ten, but they also won the conference championship game against Penn State. Advertisement As a result, the Ducks received the No. 1 seed and a first-round bye in the College Football Playoff after barely missing out on making it with Bo Nix the year prior. Oklahoma Sooners transfer Dillon Gabriel led them at the quarterback position. Oregon Ducks quarterback Dillon Gabriel (8).© Gary A. Vasquez-Imagn Images Dillon Gabriel gets good news during Browns minicamp While the Ducks fell to the Ohio State Buckeyes in the Rose Bowl, that didn't put a stop to their success. In April's NFL Draft, 10 Ducks were selected, the most in a single draft in program history. Many were shocked to see Gabriel be selected as high as he was when the Cleveland Browns took him in the third round. Even more surprising was the fact that they drafted him with Shedeur Sanders still on the board. Advertisement Now, the two are battling it out in Browns minicamp. While some out there believe in Sanders, Gabriel has received good news regarding his current standing with the team. In their 11-on-11 drills, Gabriel has been seen working with the first-team offense, something beat writer Mary Kay Cabot believes is significant. 'I think it's very significant right now that they're throwing first-teamers at Dillon," wrote Kabot. "Dillon is playing with the first-team offense against the first-team defense. I mean, those are choice quality reps that he's getting.' The Browns are one of the more intriguing quarterback battles around the league, with Gabriel, Sanders, Joe Flacco, and Kenny Pickett. Advertisement 'The Browns are positioning Gabriel to potentially serve as the backup quarterback behind a veteran starter, likely Joe Flacco or Pickett," Kabot wrote. "Sanders, meanwhile, is on a longer developmental timeline.' Things can change between now and the team's official training camp in August, but the Browns have seemingly liked what they've seen from Gabriel if they're not afraid to throw first-team reps at him. While he's not the biggest, Gabriel has a solid arm with great ball placement. They likely won't build around him, but they can likely keep you competitive in a game if he's thrown into the game in an emergency situation. Shedeur Sanders Praised for his Demeanor During Browns Minicamp
Shedeur Sanders Praised for his Demeanor During Browns Minicamp originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Shedeur Sanders delivered a strong performance during the second day of the Cleveland Browns' mandatory minicamp Wednesday, further fueling speculation if he could be a serious contender for the team's starting job. Advertisement The fifth-round draft pick out of Colorado was nearly flawless during seven-on-seven and 11-on-11 drills. According to ESPN Cleveland, Sanders completed 8-of-9 passes with one touchdown and didn't turn the ball over for a second straight day. Sanders' fellow quarterbacks had mixed results. Dillon Gabriel went 9-of-16 with two touchdowns. Joe Flacco completed just 3-of-7 passes with a touchdown, while Kenny Pickett was 6-of-11 with a score of his own. The Browns will likely use Flacco as a starter, but the competition among Sanders, Gabriel, Flacco and Pickett is expected to continue into training camp and possibly through the preseason. While Sanders remains an underdog to start Week 1, his sharp showing Wednesday gave the coaching staff more to think about. 'This quarterback battle feels as open as any,' Pro Football Focus analyst Thomas Valentine said. 'Draft order notwithstanding, [Sanders] is the most talented quarterback on the roster.' Advertisement Valentine predicted that Sanders could ultimately win the job, citing his elite 91.0 PFF grade from his final college season. Sanders' draft stock tumbled unexpectedly in April, sliding from a projected first-round pick to a fifth-round selection, where Cleveland took him with the 144th overall pick. 'Life is just based on how you view different things,' Sanders said Tuesday after the Browns' first minicamp practice. Deion Sanders Had Words After Shedeur's Second Day of Browns Camp
The Cleveland Browns' rookie minicamp started on Friday, and all eyes have been on the quarterback battle between Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel. Gabriel was the first quarterback drafted by Cleveland with the No. 94 overall pick in the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft. After passing on Sanders earlier in the draft, the Browns added the former Colorado Buffaloes star to the QB room by selecting him with the No. 144 overall pick in the fifth round. Advertisement Observers have sounded off on everything about the rookies, from Gabriel's physical appearance to Sanders' off-field decisions. On Saturday, CU football coach Deion Sanders entered the conversation with some words for his son on Instagram. Downing-Imagn Images Shortly after practice had wrapped up in Cleveland, Coach Prime shared two videos of his son completing impressive passes to his Browns teammates. "Ok Young King," the 57-year-old wrote, tagging the accounts of Shedeur and the Browns to make sure they saw it. In the third slide, Sanders added a screenshot of a post on X from NFL reporter Joe Schad, claiming that the Browns rookie had a "phenomenal day" in his second day of rookie minicamp. Advertisement The father-son duo is about to be separated for the first football season since 2017, when Deion started coaching Shedeur and his other sons Shilo Sanders and Deion Sanders Jr. at Trinity Christian School in Cedar Hill, Texas. The quarterback amassed a 36-15 record in college while being coached by his father for two seasons at Jackson State and two seasons at Colorado. During his media availability, Shedeur said that seeing his dad's Hall of Fame NFL career — which included Super Bowl rings with the San Francisco 49ers and Dallas Cowboys — helped prepare him for the transition to the professional game. It also taught the 23-year-old how to deal with hate. However, Sanders stated that his internal motivation is a bigger factor than trying to prove anyone else wrong. Advertisement "My job here isn't to prove people wrong," Sanders said. "It's to prove myself right." LeBron James Sends Shedeur Sanders 5-Word Message After Browns Rookie Camp
Depending on your preferred, preconceived narrative, Shedeur Sanders was either lousy or legendary in his first practice at Cleveland Browns' rookie minicamp. Get used to it with one of the NFL's most polarizing players. As video of some assorted throws by Sanders flooded the internet Friday, some fans laughed at his "wobbly" passes. Others, like weirdly unofficial fan club president and NFL aggregator Dov Kleiman, claimed Shedeur is already "sharper" than co-rookie Dillon Gabriel while lauding the fifth-rounder for, well, anything and everything. Advertisement "Star," Kleiman wrote on his social media. "Shedeur Sanders was one of the LAST players to leave the Browns' rookie minicamp today. Shedeur is always willing to put in extra hours. This speaks volumes about his character. A mindset that can't be taught." But ... we know that with Shedeur everything was indeed "taught" and groomed by his father Deion, right? (Speaking of, the clock is ticking on Deion petitioning the Browns to retire No. 12 after Shedeur completed a couple of passes at rookie minicamp.) Even NBA superstar - and Cleveland-area native - LeBron James jumped into the mix of reactions after Shedeur's first practice. Surprisingly, basketball's all-time scoring leader was positive without any grand proclamations. The four-time champion posted a video of Sanders at rookie minicamp on his Instagram along with an encouraging message. Wrote James, "1 day at a time." Advertisement Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski was asked about Gabriel getting the first reps over Sanders. He tried his best to stop the media from making this a controversial topic. "I wouldn't look into anything," Stefanski said. "You'll see the whole weekend, going through the spring, we don't play too close attention to who's in there first." Welcome to the Shedeur Circus. Browns rookie QB Dillon Gabriel on dealing with scrutiny alongside Shedeur Sanders: 'It just divides the team'
Cleveland Browns rookie QB Dillon Gabriel spoke up about dealing with scrutiny after being drafted alongside fellow rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders, noting how it negatively affects the team. Last month, the Browns drafted Gabriel out of Oregon in the third round with the 94th overall pick. In the fifth round, they selected Sanders out of Colorado with the 144th pick, adding depth to their quarterback lineup. With much media attention focusing on Sanders, Gabriel spoke at Browns rookie minicamp on Saturday about how the comparisons are not healthy for their team dynamic. #Browns QB Dillon Gabriel on how he'll handle he scrutiny and coverage of him and Shedeur Sanders: — Mary Kay Cabot (@MaryKayCabot) May 10, 2025 "The more questions I get asked like that — it just divides the team," Gabriel said. "We're in a room full of, not just us but Kenny [Pickett], Joe [Flacco] and Deshaun [Watson]. For us, we know how important a healthy room is, but also a team that you want to be a part of. "How do you create an environment every single day where everyone can be at their best? That's just pushing one another, which talent naturally does. Naturally, it's healthy. For us, we all do our thing and everyone wins." On Friday, Gabriel got the first reps at quarterback as the Browns ran drills and scrimmages at their facility in Berea, Ohio. Despite starting second in that order, Browns insider Brad Stainbrook noted that Sanders "looked sharper than Dillon Gabriel." Cleveland head coach Kevin Stefanski also noted that the order in camp is not an indicator of where they fall in the depth chart and is subject to change. "I wouldn't look into anything," Stefanski said on Friday. "I think you'll see the whole weekend, going through the spring. I mean, we don't pay too close attention to who is in there first."
