Kris Lees worried about rain for Brudenell in Group 2 Missile Stakes at Randwick
The scratching of favourite Private Eye has opened the door for Brudenell to win the Group 2 Missile Stakes if the weather is kind. Don't miss out on the headlines from Horse Racing. Followed categories will be added to My News. Trainer Kris Lees knows what he's going to get from ultra consistent sprinter Brudenell in Saturday's Group 2 $300,000 Missile Stakes (1200m) and just needs the conditions to play their part at Royal Randwick. Like most trainers across the state, Lees has been closely monitoring the forecast with Randwick destined to race in the heavy range again for the first stakes meeting of the season. The Missile Stakes was already blown wide open on Friday when trainer Joe Pride elected to trial hot favourite Private Eye at Warwick Farm instead of running him on a heavy track. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. It's left General Salute as a $2.70 favourite with Brudenell ($5) and Robusto ($4.40) among the leading chances. Another feature race scalp would be well-earned for Brudenell following a consistent winter campaign that included three stakes placings. • Randwick inside mail: Buchanan can't believe odds for stayer The son of Russian Revolution was second in the Listed Takeover Target, third in the Listed Luskin Star Stakes and second in the Listed Bob Charley AO Stakes. 'I like him on soft ground but rain on the day would probably be a little concern for a horse like him, that would be my doubt. 'It says he is first-up but he is not really (after racing in the winter) and has plenty of residual fitness. 'He is a fit horse up early before the better sprinters come back so this is probably is right time.' • Ray and Duff analyse every race at Randwick Jockey Dylan Gibbons, Lees' former stable apprentice, has forged a strong bond with Brudenell with the pair already combining for five victories together. While not in a stakes race, Adelaide River is a horse Lees is also keen to see feature in better races this spring. But the Newcastle-based conditioner will leave it late to determine if the import lines up in the Cup Prelude Open (1800m). The son of Australia had been missed the entire autumn as he dealt with bone bruising and was a chance to resume during the winter in the Listed McKell Cup before Lees elected to wait a little longer. Star jockey James McDonald has been booked to ride Adelaide River ($4.40) if he makes his return. 'It will be a decision for race day,' Lees said. 'He is in good order it's just whether we expose him to a heavy track first-up over 1800m after 10 months off. 'It's unlikely we would do that and there is a 1400m next weekend in both states (NSW and Victoria) so that's something we will consider. 'Everything is open with him. He has that mile and a half form at three but he is a big strapping horse and for mine he profiles like Mugatoo so I think he is versatile and he's back as a gelding now. Age Of Sail is an emergency in the same race as Adelaide River but is a significant chance of gaining a start with multiple scratchings likely. Lees said the stayer is a 50-50 chance of running the race with another suitable race next week. Little Beginnings ($34), a talented first-up horse, is also in doubt of running in the Benchmark 78 Handicap (1200m). Little Beginnings is being set for the $750,000 Little Dance on the first Tuesday in November thanks to his runner-up finish in the Mudgee Cup last preparation. Scooping success: 11-year-old P.E.I. entrepreneur serves sundaes and smiles
Maria Sarrouh talks to an 11-year-old entrepreneur in P.E.I regarding her success in running an ice cream business. When customers ring the bell at Scooper's Dairy Bar in Brudenell, P.E.I., the pint-sized employee behind the counter can sometimes be a surprise. Roya Cooper, 11, is turning her summer break into sweet profit. She runs the shop herself, checking freezer temperatures, scooping sundaes and balancing the books. 'They think that I'm way older,' Roya said. Some cash she had saved up helped start the shop. A loan through the Community Business Development Corporation, a not-for-profit network that finances small businesses and startups in Atlantic Canada, covered the rest. 'I thought ice cream was really cool. I liked eating it, and I wanted to start a business,' she said. It is not her first enterprise. At just six years old, she made French books out of post-it notes, 'She sold those bad boys for $5 apiece to tourists,' said her mom, Ambyr Cooper. 'She loves money. Always has.' Roya gets her hard-working nature from her parents. They run several businesses, including the Brudenell Riding Stables next door. '(We're) super proud,' said Carson Cooper, her dad. 'She's so good at doing everything,' added her mom. 'It's a way harder job than you think it is.' Scoop work can be sticky. Roya says chipping into the tubs takes muscle, and she often finds herself managing staff years older than she is. Her last employee threw in the towel. 'Too much cleaning for her,' the young owner said. 'Some are like, 'I don't really need to do this because I don't need to listen to you,' but others actually respect me.' So for now, she's working seven days a week, until she finds a replacement – or school starts. Most customers leave happy. 'I love the ice cream. And the chocolate, of course, is my favourite,' one patron said. Still, Roya has learned she can't please everyone. 'Some are like, this ice-cream scoop isn't so big. You have to redo it.' Her latest creation is nacho ice cream, a big scoop topped with sprinkles, sauce and waffle chips. But Roya's favourite flavour is peanut butter fudge crunch. After closing up, she goes home and handcrafts earrings shaped like mini ice-cream cones. She packages the accessories, then sells them from a small display outside, adding another revenue stream to her store. She says she wants to serve many more sundaes in the years to come, and her dream is for the business to grow with her.

Prince William and Harry's cousin claims late Queen was wrong on key Meghan decision
A distant cousin of the Princes has defended a decision made by Meghan Markle that reportedly angered the late Queen Elizabeth A distant cousin of Prince William and Prince Harry has spoken out in defence of Meghan Markle, and a decision she made on her wedding day. Maddison May Brudenell followed in the Duchess of Sussex's footsteps on her own wedding day, in particular, her dress. Maddison - the great-granddaughter of Lord Mountbatten, who is a third cousin to the Prince of Wales and the Duke of Sussex - married her husband in November 2024, opting to wear a white dress on her big day, just as Meghan did when she married Harry at Windsor Castle in 2018, despite being married once before. Sources have long claimed that the late Queen Elizabeth wasn't happy with Meghan's dress choice for the royal wedding, claiming that it 'too white' for a divorcee to wear for a second wedding. Maddison, who previously married DJ Olaoluwa Modupe-Ojo in 2015, claimed she received stern words from her own mother when choosing her wedding dress, and despite the protests, opted for a bespoke white gown to marry Canadian welder Bret Kapetanov. Writing in a lengthy post on Instagram, Brudenell repeated royal commentator Ingrid Seward's famous quote about Meghan: "In the monarch's view, it was not appropriate for a divorcée getting remarried in church to look quite so flamboyantly virginal." Brudenell explained: "Not written about me but about Meghan, The Duchess of Sussex, needless to say when this article was flung in my face last week, I didn't bat an eyelid. "Seward wrote how the late Queen only revealed her opinion to her closest confidantes and the Queen's cousin Lady Elizabeth Anson, who is said to have been among those confidantes, apparently shared that Meghan's dress was improper – considering she had been married prior to Prince Harry. "Why was I unsurprised by reading this article? Because my mother, our late queen's god daughter, had said exactly the same to me. Other family members would agree, she said." Brudenell continued: "As I told my mother, we may as well just splash some muddy water, drip some blood, sweat and tears on it for good measure. "As it happens my dress did have a lot of unique components to it but these were because of what I chose and not in any way what I felt I must choose. My mother listened to my wisdom and respected my style. I am blessed to have had that freedom, the pressures on the immediate Royal family are extreme and we must pray for them." White wedding dresses first became popular during the reign of Queen Victoria, when in 1840, she was one of the first women to wear white on her special day. On May 19, 2018, Meghan wore a beautiful gown designed by Givenchy's Clare Waight Keller for her Windsor church wedding, before changing into a halter-neck dress that featured a daring open back by Stella McCartney for the reception. The royal wedding was Meghan's second marriage, as she was previously married to film producer Trevor Engelson between 2011 and 2014, with the pair separating two years before Meghan met Prince Harry.

Trainer Kris Lees to run Brudenell at Randwick on Saturday after weighing up Eagle Farm option
Racing history might be weighing heavily against Brudenell but trainer Kris Lees wants to give the sprinter his chance in the Listed $200,000 Bob Charley AO Stakes (1100m) at Royal Randwick on Saturday. Brudenell has been burdened with 59kg, an impost which has proven beyond all but four horses in the last 50 years of the Australian Turf Club's feature winter sprint, formerly known as the June Stakes. Classique Legend had 60kg when he won the Randwick sprint in 2020 en route to his triumph in The Everest, Jungle Edge won under 60.5kg in 2018, and Avoid Lightning (2014) and Oranmore (1977) both carried 59kg. Lees did nominate Brudenell for the Group 2 Moreton Cup at Eagle Farm as well but he felt the Bob Charley Stakes was the more winnable race. 'I will keep Brudenell for Randwick,'' Lees said. 'He's not great on a long float trip anyway. 'I know he has plenty of weight at Randwick but he has probably earned it. He goes to Saturday's race in very good form.'' Brudenell won the Listed Abell Stakes at Moonee Valley earlier this campaign and more recently ran a close second to Barber in the Listed Takeover Target Stakes at Gosford before a last-start third to The Instructor in the Listed Luskin Star Stakes at Scone. It's Brudenell's Abell Stakes, careering away for a classy victory ðŸ'« Mark Zahra & Kris Lees combine for Listed success at The Valley ðŸ¤ — (@Racing) February 28, 2025 The Bob Charley Stakes has attracted a final field of 15 with Front Page, who is co-topweight with Brudenell, also in the Moreton Cup. Also at Eagle Farm, Lees is chasing a third win in the Group 1 $700,000 Queensland Oaks (2200m) with either You Wahng or Eclair Encore. You Wahng, who ran a close third in the ATC Australian Oaks during the Sydney autumn carnival, has maintained her form as evidenced by a solid last start fifth to Philia in The Roses. 'This will probably be a more high pressure Oaks than what we had in Sydney but we know our filly can stay,'' said Lees, who has won the Queensland Oaks previously with Amokura (2023) and Vitesse Dane (2005). 'I'm thinking the Oaks for Eclair Encore despite the bad barrier (18),'' Lees said. 'I feel it is slightly the better option for her. We did consider splitting them up but we have to do what is best for both fillies.'' Amokura has had only five starts since her Oaks success and is resuming after nearly 12 months off in the Sydney Roosters Partners Handicap (1600m) at Royal Randwick. Lees explained Amokura had 'some bone bruising' which kept her out of racing for an extended period but said the mare has had a trouble-free preparation ahead of her comeback on Saturday. 'I'm only going to give her a couple of runs and then bring her back for the spring.'' Lees also has Loch Eagle taking on stablemate Akomura in the mile race with the gelding impressing the trainer with his first-up eighth behind stablemate Tavi Time in the Scone Cup. Stardom in the Listed Woodlands Stakes.
