Trainer Kris Lees to run Brudenell at Randwick on Saturday after weighing up Eagle Farm option
Racing history might be weighing heavily against Brudenell but trainer Kris Lees wants to give the sprinter his chance in the Listed $200,000 Bob Charley AO Stakes (1100m) at Royal Randwick on Saturday. Brudenell has been burdened with 59kg, an impost which has proven beyond all but four horses in the last 50 years of the Australian Turf Club's feature winter sprint, formerly known as the June Stakes. Classique Legend had 60kg when he won the Randwick sprint in 2020 en route to his triumph in The Everest, Jungle Edge won under 60.5kg in 2018, and Avoid Lightning (2014) and Oranmore (1977) both carried 59kg. Lees did nominate Brudenell for the Group 2 Moreton Cup at Eagle Farm as well but he felt the Bob Charley Stakes was the more winnable race. 'I will keep Brudenell for Randwick,'' Lees said. 'He's not great on a long float trip anyway. 'I know he has plenty of weight at Randwick but he has probably earned it. He goes to Saturday's race in very good form.'' Brudenell won the Listed Abell Stakes at Moonee Valley earlier this campaign and more recently ran a close second to Barber in the Listed Takeover Target Stakes at Gosford before a last-start third to The Instructor in the Listed Luskin Star Stakes at Scone. It's Brudenell's Abell Stakes, careering away for a classy victory ðŸ'« Mark Zahra & Kris Lees combine for Listed success at The Valley ðŸ¤ — (@Racing) February 28, 2025 The Bob Charley Stakes has attracted a final field of 15 with Front Page, who is co-topweight with Brudenell, also in the Moreton Cup. Also at Eagle Farm, Lees is chasing a third win in the Group 1 $700,000 Queensland Oaks (2200m) with either You Wahng or Eclair Encore. You Wahng, who ran a close third in the ATC Australian Oaks during the Sydney autumn carnival, has maintained her form as evidenced by a solid last start fifth to Philia in The Roses. 'This will probably be a more high pressure Oaks than what we had in Sydney but we know our filly can stay,'' said Lees, who has won the Queensland Oaks previously with Amokura (2023) and Vitesse Dane (2005). 'I'm thinking the Oaks for Eclair Encore despite the bad barrier (18),'' Lees said. 'I feel it is slightly the better option for her. We did consider splitting them up but we have to do what is best for both fillies.'' Amokura has had only five starts since her Oaks success and is resuming after nearly 12 months off in the Sydney Roosters Partners Handicap (1600m) at Royal Randwick. Lees explained Amokura had 'some bone bruising' which kept her out of racing for an extended period but said the mare has had a trouble-free preparation ahead of her comeback on Saturday. 'I'm only going to give her a couple of runs and then bring her back for the spring.'' Lees also has Loch Eagle taking on stablemate Akomura in the mile race with the gelding impressing the trainer with his first-up eighth behind stablemate Tavi Time in the Scone Cup. Barber overcomes tough run to post first win for new connections in Takeover Target Stakes
Ex-Godolphin sprinter Barber quickly proved he was a very wise investment with a stakes victory at just his second start for new trainer Richard Litt at Gosford on Saturday. Purchased for $215,000 at an Inglis Digital auction late last year, Barber paid off a significant portion of that price tag with a narrow win in the Listed $250,000 Takeover Target Stakes (1200m). It came at just his second start for Litt and delivered his owners a $140,000 windfall. 'They are maybe a little bit short (of the investment) but today would be a good payday,' Litt said. 'He is a wonderful horse, he ran extremely well first-up at Canterbury, probably a little bit unlucky. 'Today I couldn't watch when he was three-wide, I just bowed my head and thought oh well, what will be will be, and it was good to see him tough it out.' Jockey Tyler Schiller was unable to find cover and remained in the three-deep line throughout, making his run inside the final 600m alongside the Kris Lees -trained Brudenell ($11). The paired off to fight it and went toe-to-toe over the length of the home straight. Barber ($8) got his nose down when it counted to get the measure of Brudenell to score in a photo finish with the James Cummings -trained Spacewalk ($18) surging home for third. Barber's win ensured punters landed a significant plunge after he opened as much as $26 with bookies during the week. 'But massive congratulations to Jason and the Monarch Racing boys. 'They put their money on the line to buy this horse and we've got a massive result.' Litt has been made a habit of winning with Godolphin cast-offs with the likes of Balkans, Huon, Sedition, Destination and Morton's Fork all successful for the trainer. 'They are wonderful to buy off,' Litt said. 'You know what you're getting. They're great horses. 'James is a wonderful trainer and they have a great team. 'They are very transparent and from my point of view, I am very lucky to be able to buy them.' Litt is open to heading to Queensland for a Brisbane winter carnival assault with Barber. The gelding holds nominations for the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 and in the Sunshine State.

Teen recorded saying ‘Heil Hitler' and making racist slurs at golf tournament arrested for underage drinking
A teenager who was seen in a viral video making shocking racist comments is facing multiple charges after being subsequently arrested for trespassing while intoxicated at a golf club in Scottsdale, Arizona. Brandtbert J Brudenell, 19, was arrested at TPC Scottsdale just before 8pm on Thursday February 6 after being found wandering near the green's second hole when the course was closed, accor ding to Arizona Republic. Scottsdale Police said Brudenell had fled from the venue's security personnel prior to being apprehended by officers and was duly taken to Scottsdale Jail and booked on suspicion of criminal trespassing, refusing to provide his real name and underage alcohol consumption. They added that, although they were not aware of the fact at the time of the arrest, Brudenell is the same man who has been widely seen declaring 'Heil Hitler' and making racist slurs against Mexicans in a video that recently went viral on Instagram after reportedly being filmed at the WM Phoenix Open. The video, filmed by an unknown woman, features Brudenell (incorrectly) making a '1488' hand gesture – recognized by the Anti-Defamation League as a numerical code used by neo-Nazis and white supremacists – and declaring that 'border-hopping' immigrants should have their throats 'sliced' before making personal insults to the woman filming on her phone after being confronted about his comments. 'We were doing our own thing, and he approached us and started making comments about Mexican men, so we started recording,' a caption on the original video read, by way of explanation. Scottsdale Police spokesperson Sergeant Allison Sempsis said officers have addressed the video with Brudenell and have made contact with the woman who filmed it in order to better understand its context. The Phoenix Open has since said in a statement that the offender has been banned from its event and condemned his remarks, which it said were 'unacceptable and not representative of our fans, players, and organizers.' The Open said its management and sponsors 'have a zero-tolerance policy for hate speech in any form and have banned the individual from the premises and all future PGA TOUR events.' Phoenix-based home security company Vivent said it had dismissed Brudenell from his job with the firm, which he had held for less than three months, after completing an internal investigation inspired by the video, in which the subject can be seen wearing a baseball cap bearing its logo. 'This behavior is abhorrent and in no way reflects the values of our brand,' Vivent said in a statement of its own. Brudenell has meanwhile been made the subject of a Facebook parody account, brutally satirizing his sudden brush with notoriety. As Arizona Republic points out, the incident is the latest in a series of recent episodes in which emboldened individuals have been reprimanded for making overtly offensive gestures or statements in public. Clergyman Calvin Robinson, for one, lost his license as a priest with the Anglican Catholic Church following an appearance in Washington, D.C., in which he attempted to mimic the 'Nazi' salute Elon Musk made at an event celebrating Donald Trump 's inauguration as president last month. Supervisor Laura Smith, for another, was forced to resign from the Towamencin Township Board of Supervisors in Pennsylvania for likewise making a gesture similar to Musk's in another video that went viral. One of Musk's own employees at the Department of Government Efficiency, Marko Elez, also had to resign after a string of racist X posts were uncovered, only for the world's richest man to reinstate him.

The Brief 19-year-old Brandtbert J. Brudenell was arrested by Scottsdale Police over an incident at the WM Phoenix Open. The man is also believed to be involved in a racist incident that was caught on video. SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - Scottsdale Police officials have an update on an incident involving a man who walked onto the golf course at TPC Scottsdale during the WM Phoenix Open. The incident, according to a statement, happened on the night of Feb. 6. Per a statement we received on Feb. 10, the suspect in the case was identified as 19-year-old Brandtbert J. Brudenell. Brudenell, according to investigators, was found walking on the WM Phoenix Open course near the 2nd hole. The incident happened when the course was closed. What they're saying "Upon contact with officers, Brudenell refused to exit the course grounds, and ProEm security informed officers that Brudenell had run from security earlier. Officers placed Brudenell under arrest for criminal trespass, refusing to provide a truthful name, and being under 21 with any liquor in the body," read a portion of the statement. What's next The suspect, according to Scottsdale Police, was taken to Scottsdale City Jail. According to Scottsdale Police, Brudenell's arrest came after an incident that was captured on video, and subsequently shared online. Police say officers had no knowledge of the video when they contacted Brudenell. Dig deeper In the video, a man who looks like Brudenell was seen spouting a number of racist comments, including "you guys are [expletive] border-hopper [expletive]." "We were doing our own thing, and he approached us and started making comments about Mexican men, so we started recording," a caption on the video reads. Later, the man in the video also made a rather violent comment about people who were caught at the border. We have received a statement from the man's employer, Vivint, which reads: What they're saying "We launched an investigation as soon as we were made aware of the video, quickly identified the individual, and terminated his employment, which began less than three months ago. This behavior is abhorrent and in no way reflects the values of our brand." Meanwhile, Scottsdale Police say they have been in contact with the person who originally posted the video. A report was taken, and an investigation into that incident remains ongoing.
