Kris Lees worried about rain for Brudenell in Group 2 Missile Stakes at Randwick

Kris Lees worried about rain for Brudenell in Group 2 Missile Stakes at Randwick

Herald Sun2 days ago
The scratching of favourite Private Eye has opened the door for Brudenell to win the Group 2 Missile Stakes if the weather is kind.
Don't miss out on the headlines from Horse Racing. Followed categories will be added to My News.
Trainer Kris Lees knows what he's going to get from ultra consistent sprinter Brudenell in Saturday's Group 2 $300,000 Missile Stakes (1200m) and just needs the conditions to play their part at Royal Randwick.
Like most trainers across the state, Lees has been closely monitoring the forecast with Randwick destined to race in the heavy range again for the first stakes meeting of the season.
The Missile Stakes was already blown wide open on Friday when trainer Joe Pride elected to trial hot favourite Private Eye at Warwick Farm instead of running him on a heavy track.

Private Eye was a winner of his heat with Pride set to weigh up running him in next week's Group 2 $300,000 PB Lawrence Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield or the Group 1 $1m Winx Stakes (1400m) at Randwick the following week.
It's left General Salute as a $2.70 favourite with Brudenell ($5) and Robusto ($4.40) among the leading chances.
Another feature race scalp would be well-earned for Brudenell following a consistent winter campaign that included three stakes placings.
• Randwick inside mail: Buchanan can't believe odds for stayer
The son of Russian Revolution was second in the Listed Takeover Target, third in the Listed Luskin Star Stakes and second in the Listed Bob Charley AO Stakes.
Lees has given him a short freshen-up to reload for the spring and is confident he can maintain his strong form, provided the rain holds off on race day. — Racing NSW (@racing_nsw) June 7, 2025
'He is competitive, puts himself in the right spot, rarely runs bad,' Lees said.
'I like him on soft ground but rain on the day would probably be a little concern for a horse like him, that would be my doubt.
'It says he is first-up but he is not really (after racing in the winter) and has plenty of residual fitness.
'He is a fit horse up early before the better sprinters come back so this is probably is right time.'
• Ray and Duff analyse every race at Randwick
Jockey Dylan Gibbons, Lees' former stable apprentice, has forged a strong bond with Brudenell with the pair already combining for five victories together.
While not in a stakes race, Adelaide River is a horse Lees is also keen to see feature in better races this spring.
But the Newcastle-based conditioner will leave it late to determine if the import lines up in the Cup Prelude Open (1800m).
The son of Australia had been missed the entire autumn as he dealt with bone bruising and was a chance to resume during the winter in the Listed McKell Cup before Lees elected to wait a little longer.
Star jockey James McDonald has been booked to ride Adelaide River ($4.40) if he makes his return.
'It will be a decision for race day,' Lees said.
'He is in good order it's just whether we expose him to a heavy track first-up over 1800m after 10 months off.
'It's unlikely we would do that and there is a 1400m next weekend in both states (NSW and Victoria) so that's something we will consider.
'Everything is open with him. He has that mile and a half form at three but he is a big strapping horse and for mine he profiles like Mugatoo so I think he is versatile and he's back as a gelding now.
'There is no specific target but we want to see him race well.'
• 'Can't believe it': One-horse trainer takes on Sydney's elite
Lees identified the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes as a possible target for Adelaide River.
Age Of Sail is an emergency in the same race as Adelaide River but is a significant chance of gaining a start with multiple scratchings likely.
Lees said the stayer is a 50-50 chance of running the race with another suitable race next week.
Little Beginnings ($34), a talented first-up horse, is also in doubt of running in the Benchmark 78 Handicap (1200m).
Little Beginnings is being set for the $750,000 Little Dance on the first Tuesday in November thanks to his runner-up finish in the Mudgee Cup last preparation.

Goulburn previews: Portelli's horror streak of wide barriers continues

TWO-time Golden Slipper winning trainer Gary Portelli 's horror streak of wide barriers this season has followed him to Goulburn on Monday where three of his four runners were dealt the outside alley in their respective races. Portelli has saddled-up five starters in the 2025/26 season so far, the first two of those drew 7 of 7 and 6 of 6 in their assignments. Portelli's Goulburn -bound quartet with each of their barriers are Zoodoo (9 of 9), Sculptor (10 of 10), Angels Cry (14 of 14) and Greygenta who was issued 12 of 16. Zoodoo finished last in his only visit to Goulburn, on debut in January but has a more recent provincial placing to enhance his resume, followed by an excusable, distant fourth on the Canberra Acton track. 'The jockey said he didn't really appreciate that surface so he is a better chance hopefully on what will probably be a wet track, I'd imagine,'' Portelli said. 'On his run at Newcastle, he'd be competitive for sure.' Of all Portelli's Goulburn entrants, there is no contest in which is the track specialist among them. That honour goes clearly the way of Sculptor who shares his name with the 1983 Danehill Stakes and Brian Crowley Stakes winner. Portelli's 2021 model's record at Goulburn is three starts for a win and a second. 'We tried him over 1300m the other day but he just raced too fiercely and flattened out and couldn't find the line so we are back to the sprint and back to a wet track hopefully,'' Portelli said. Angels Cry ($8) meanwhile looks headed on the right trajectory for what would be her second career win at start five when she tackles the Nutrien Harcourts Benchmark Handicap (1600m) wearing the white, green crossed sashes, red sleeves and cap carried by past Portelli-trained Group 1 stars, Fireburn and Rebel Dane. 'She got beat by a pretty smart horse of Garry Lunn's at Bathurst and after she went through the line, I thought she was battling on just as strong past the line,'' Portelli said. 'I thought maybe the slower tempo of the mile might suit her.' Portelli's final runner on Monday's card is the $30,000 Inglis Australian Weanling purchase Greygenta whose sole win thus far was a barnstorming last to first effort at Queanbeyan a week out from last Christmas. She opened her winter campaign with career worst run at Goulburn (on a heavy (9)) before bouncing back to her best 18-days later when third at Kembla. â– â– â– â– â– DANNY Williams quest for another Goulburn Trainers' Premiership starts on Monday when two of the stable string go around in eminently winnable races. Williams whose career highlights include the 2022 Group 1 Galaxy with Shelby Sixtysix just three starts after winning a Highway Handicap, has lost count of exactly how many local titles he has won but reckons it ''must be six or seven''. Williams can take his career total of Goulburn winners to 148 should the lightly-raced Manwari and his nine-year-old stablemates both be successful on Monday. Manwari will be ridden in the Maykazz Maiden (1200m) by Nick Heywood whose win tally for Williams of 46 ranks him second to Matthew Cahill (60) but above former jockey and now dual Darwin Cup winner trainer – Peter Robl – on 43. Heywood's record on Manwari is four rides for three placings including the gelding's July 15 third at Warren when clocking in third as the $1.75 favourite. 'He seems to be a horse that has shown us enough that we feel that he is city-class but he has been very disappointing on what he has shown us on the racetrack,'' Williams said. 'We took six horses to Warren looking for a drier track and it never stopped raining the whole day. 'Albeit he got through the ground, we had him at 1200m and we took some blood leading into it and the blood said he could have done with more work. 'And he struck a wet track, it says a soft (6) but it was a lot wetter than that because they downgraded it after race one. 'He just ran out of puff. 'We have held him back for this meeting for a couple of reasons. 'We've got a lot of owners coming on Monday for (me) winning the Premiership and having a day-out and secondly, it just looked a nice suitable race for him.' Avid breeding buffs will be interested to dissect Manwari's fascinating pedigree which was designed by well known industry figure, James Bester. 'We bought this horse because he is he has got a cross of two brothers,'' Williams said. 'His sire Menari is by Snitzel and he's out of a Hinchinbrook and Snitzel and Hinchinbrook are half-brothers. 'I am quite a fan on inbreeding and so we bought this horse based on his pedigree.' For the record, Manwari's inbreeding is a 4 X 4 doublecross of Snippets who happened to win the Galaxy some 24 years before Williams won it with giant-killer, Shelby Sixtysix. Speaking of 'ageless' horses, Williams makes a solid case for now nine-year-old Sapphires Son who tackles the Nutrien Harcourts Benchmark 58 Handicap over his favoured distance of 1600m. The son of former Vinery Stud resident Pluck's last win came in the nation's capital the day before Bella Nipotina's brave salute in the $20 million The Everest (1200m). That said, his recent form stands-up well in what is clearly an open and competitive mile race and while carrying a featherweight of 51kg after apprentice Dale Cole 's 4kg claim. 'He is very one-paced and he needs a lot to go right for him,'' Williams said. 'I've put Dale on him quite a bit because he is an easy to ride. Dale did ride him very well at Forbes bit Forbes is a track where you need to be running forward from the 600m and he just got held up a little bit longer than we would have liked. 'He looks to be best suited going out to 1600m and if we get a downgrade of the track it is only going to be to his benefit.'

Goulburn, Lismore tips and race-by-race analysis for Monday

NSW form analyst Shayne O'Cass has provided his best bets and race-by-race analysis for the quaddie legs at Monday's NSW country meetings at Goulburn and Lismore. â– â– â– â– â– GOULBURN TIPS BEST BET Shadow Of Light (Race 5 No. 11) Well-bred filly who has a bright future; 1500m on the big track is ideal now. NEXT BEST Yvette (Race 1 No. 5) Daughter of a Group 1 winner who can stand up here in country grade. VALUE Drunken Sailor (Race 6 No. 6) Just the type of race this horse can, and might, win. Right jockey on too. QUADDIE Race 4: 1,3,9,10 Race 5: 11 Race 6: 5,6,13 Race 7: 2,5,12 JOCKEY TO FOLLOW Keagan Latham rode more winners at Goulburn last season than any other jockey. **** LAY OF THE DAY **** Angel City (Race 5 No. 8) I think the market has overreacted to her second on debut and not convinced she's looking for extra ground based on that performance. I'd want better than $5 to be entertaining her. â– â– â– â– â– GOULBURN INSIDE MAIL Yvette is worth a whole lot more off the track than she is on it given she is a daughter of I Am Invincible out of the Robert Sangster Stakes winner Secret Agenda and thus a direct descendant of Denise's Joy. Placed at Canterbury at her first two runs, the last two haven't been nearly as good but this is doable. Outcast Ally, another very, very valuable broodmare later on, trials like a good filly. Could well ping and be hard to run down here. Vincetio (blinkers first time) and Blinked, the daughter of the handy Don't Blink, have claims. Bet: Yvette to win, exacta/quinella 5,7. â– â– â– â– â– Brannum was scratched from Moruya last Thursday to presumably run here at home. That said, he has been dealt the visitors drawn, but he still boasts the best form in the race. The Danny Williams-trained Manwari has been awfully costly, no time more so than when beaten at $1.75 at Warren last start. To be fair to the horse, it was more about the track conditions (bordering on heavy in actual fact) that contributed to the loss. Sonic Scene is back to country racing after two runs at the midweeks. Bet: Brannum to win or if scratched Manwari to win. â– â– â– â– â– Bode Akuna was scheduled to run at the washed out Randwick meeting on Saturday. The Jason Coyle bred and trained gelding was good at Kembla second-up and not too bad at Warwick Farm after that on the heavy (8). Loves racing at Goulburn. Don't Doubt Merlin similarly broke his maiden here with Jay Ford riding. How symmetrical is that given Ford steered this horse's mother to her first win and it was also at Goulburn for David Pfieffer. Go well but has a big weight and a wide draw. The Bathurst pair of Dean Mirfin housed horses, Chico Casino and Shaddap, are both last start winners. Bet: Bode Akuna to win or if scratched Don't Doubt Merlin to win. â– â– â– â– â– Jackpot Star was scratched from Sunday's Wagga meeting to run here. Note that he will wear blinkers for the first time. The son of Australian Derby winner Starcraft and Wellington Boot winner Jackpot Queen has what seems to be superior form to his rivals – but a sticky draw to deal with. Your Magic is a horse on an upward trajectory. That much is clear given he is '821'. It almost goes with saying how impressive he was winning last start at the Sapphire Coast given he won by almost nine-lengths. Lombardi Lass was disappointing first-up but her first two runs last prep included a maiden win here at home. Bet: Jackpot Star to win. â– â– â– â– â– Shadow Of Light is a filly by The Autumn Sun out of a mare called Swampland who was beaten a neck in the Let's Elope and was third in a Maybe Mahal. Shadow of Light thus has a really nice mile/2000m profile on pedigree and the way that she ran on debut would back that up somewhat. One thing is certain: 1500m at Goulburn suits her better than 1300m at Wyong. Let's just cut and paste a lot of that for Jagerbomb. Important pedigree note for him going forward, he is by Contributer and his fourth dam is Eight Carat and boasts a doublecross of Sadler's Wells. Bet: Shadow Of Light to win (best bet), exacta 11/3, Daily Double 1st Leg 11, 2nd Leg 5. â– â– â– â– â– Drunken Sailor was originally purchased at Karaka in 2022 for $220,000 but never raced. Enter James Ponsonby who shelled out $1250 online for the son of Ocean Park who has since earned $60,470. He is back in NSW and back in country grade after a trip to Eagle Farm. This is the type of race he can win. We could, and do, say the same about the nine-year-old Sapphires Son who has the home-track advantage. Goes around here with a postage stamp on his back and he's in good nick too. â– â– â– â– â– Benamera could, like a lot of horses entered at Goulburn, be saved for Hawkesbury on Tuesday. It is his home track after all. On top if here. If not, it opens the gate big time for Gary Portelli's grey mare Greygenta. She won like Bernborough the day she broke at maiden at Queanbeyan so gets marked up for X-factor. As for more recent times, she didn't handle the slop here first-up but was back to her usual good self at Kembla. Bonus Tempus may have only won twice in 56 starts but he placed 13 times and often in some quite decent races in town, provincial and country. Bet: Greygenta each-way. â– â– â– â– â–
