GOULBURN INSIDE MAIL
Yvette is worth a whole lot more off the track than she is on it given she is a daughter of I Am Invincible out of the Robert Sangster Stakes winner Secret Agenda and thus a direct descendant of Denise's Joy. Placed at Canterbury at her first two runs, the last two haven't been nearly as good but this is doable. Outcast Ally, another very, very valuable broodmare later on, trials like a good filly. Could well ping and be hard to run down here. Vincetio (blinkers first time) and Blinked, the daughter of the handy Don't Blink, have claims.
Bet: Yvette to win, exacta/quinella 5,7.

Brannum was scratched from Moruya last Thursday to presumably run here at home. That said, he has been dealt the visitors drawn, but he still boasts the best form in the race. The Danny Williams-trained Manwari  has been awfully costly, no time more so than when beaten at $1.75 at Warren last start. To be fair to the horse, it was more about the track conditions (bordering on heavy in actual fact) that contributed to the loss. Sonic Scene is back to country racing after two runs at the midweeks.
Bet: Brannum to win or if scratched Manwari to win.

Bode Akuna was scheduled to run at the washed out Randwick meeting on Saturday. The Jason Coyle bred and trained gelding was good at Kembla second-up and not too bad at Warwick Farm after that on the heavy (8). Loves racing at Goulburn. Don't Doubt Merlin similarly broke his maiden here with Jay Ford riding. How symmetrical is that given Ford steered this horse's mother to her first win and it was also at Goulburn for David Pfieffer. Go well but has a big weight and a wide draw. The Bathurst pair of Dean Mirfin housed horses, Chico Casino and Shaddap, are both last start winners.
Bet: Bode Akuna to win or if scratched Don't Doubt Merlin to win.

Jackpot Star was scratched from Sunday's Wagga meeting to run here. Note that he will wear blinkers for the first time. The son of Australian Derby winner Starcraft and Wellington Boot winner Jackpot Queen has what seems to be superior form to his rivals – but a sticky draw to deal with. Your Magic is a horse on an upward trajectory. That much is clear given he is '821'. It almost goes with saying how impressive he was winning last start at the Sapphire Coast given he won by almost nine-lengths. Lombardi Lass was disappointing first-up but her first two runs last prep included a maiden win here at home.
Bet: Jackpot Star to win.

Shadow Of Light is a filly by The Autumn Sun out of a mare called Swampland who was beaten a neck in the Let's Elope and was third in a Maybe Mahal. Shadow of Light thus has a really nice mile/2000m profile on pedigree and the way that she ran on debut would back that up somewhat. One thing is certain: 1500m at Goulburn suits her better than 1300m at Wyong. Let's just cut and paste a lot of that for Jagerbomb. Important pedigree note for him going forward, he is by Contributer and his fourth dam is Eight Carat and boasts a doublecross of Sadler's Wells.
Bet: Shadow Of Light  to win (best bet), exacta 11/3, Daily Double 1st Leg 11, 2nd Leg 5.

Drunken Sailor was originally purchased at Karaka in 2022 for $220,000 but never raced. Enter James Ponsonby who shelled out $1250 online for the son of Ocean Park who has since earned $60,470. He is back in NSW and back in country grade after a trip to Eagle Farm. This is the type of race he can win. We could, and do, say the same about the nine-year-old Sapphires Son who has the home-track advantage. Goes around here with a postage stamp on his back and he's in good nick too.

Benamera could, like a lot of horses entered at Goulburn, be saved for Hawkesbury on Tuesday. It is his home track after all. On top if here. If not, it opens the gate big time for Gary Portelli's grey mare Greygenta. She won like Bernborough the day she broke at maiden at Queanbeyan so gets marked up for X-factor. As for more recent times, she didn't handle the slop here first-up but was back to her usual good self at Kembla. Bonus Tempus may have only won twice in 56 starts but he placed 13 times and often in some quite decent races in town, provincial and country.
Bet: Greygenta each-way.

This now four-year-old mare turned in a very solid and encouraging debut here back on Feb 20. Trialled twice, won the last one – well! HURRY MISS (9) has the race fitness advantage and more to the point, she was a close second to a really nice horse (Patissier, see race 3) first-up. HARRY'S EVIDENCE (7) will be on-speed and can stick on for a medal. SHARE THE JOY (11) is just so consistent. BET: WHERE'S MY HALO (13) each-way, quinella 9,13. BANKNOTE HUSTLER (11) has drawn wide here but copped 11 of 11 on the Kensington track on Wednesday. He's by Capitalist out of the stakes-winner and Group 1 runner-up Torvil. Only two runs so far were in the Lonhro Plate and Todman. Trialling like a bomb! OHOPE (3) could be saved for the Kensington meeting; goes close surely wherever he fronts-up. YOU'RE THE CHOICE (7) was well beaten first-up at Gosford but beaten a potentially outstanding horse namely Valillee (see race five). COSMIC EAGLE (9) only has to do what she has been doing to figure again. BET: BANKNOTE HUSTLER (11) to win. PATISSIER (1) was born at Rich Hill Stud in NZ where his father, Proisir, stands. This is also the Rich Hill Stud family that delivered the 11-times Group 1 winner King Mufhasa. Same family as Kovalica too. Patissier was trialling well ahead of his really determined win at Kembla, beating the aforementioned Hurry Miss. EXCEED PERFECTION (3) has only managed one win from 17 starts but he has placed eight times and six of them are seconds. Very fit, probably leads, and has some decent Heavy track stats. AFFERMATO (2) was really warming to the task late over 1300m first-up at Kembla. BET: PATISSIER (1) to win or of scratched, AFFERMATO (2) each-way. GOLDEN CENTURY (2) is $101 to win the Caulfield Cup, now that would get you a few dims sums down at the restaurant of the same name down at the Crown these days! This is the former Tony Pike-trained gelding's first run for Chris Waller and his first since he ran 7th of 18 in our Derby, having run 3rd of 16 in the NZ Derby. The trials? Wow. MOUNTAIN QUEEN (14) is a Matthew Smith-trained filly by his former dual G1 winner Fierce Impact. Family of Horlicks and Brew too. Wouldn't be shocked to see this one in a Guineas or Oaks in 2025/26. BET: GOLDEN CENTURY (2) to win, exacta/quinella 2,14. VAILILEE (3) is, for want of no better word, untapped. The now five-year-old won a trial here by 11-lengths on July 7 then went to Gosford 12 days later and won by four, eased down. Drawn 4, same jockey (Mitchell Bell). Being an Adelaide, (I) would back him in to handle it wet but he's still got to do it. VANLEE (6) 's record at this track and distance is two starts for a close second and a half-length win. CHEEKY SMIRK (7) was impressive and emphatic when he won here on debut over 1100m. BET: VAILILEE (3) to win, exacta 3 to beat 6, Daily Double 1st leg 3, 2nd Leg 7. OAKFIELD NEPTUNE (4) is an acceptor for the Queen of the Valley Matchmaker at Muswellbrook. This is a harder race but she has a few things in her favour, not least barrier 2 and a whole lot of talent. COMMANDING BELLE (6) was a 'commanding' winner at Kembla second-up. Runner-up there nine days later but ran through the line with real purpose. Ditto that and then some for ALFRED (3) who has clearly come back in great order this time in. BET: OAKFIELD NEPTUNE (4) to win or if scratched Commanding Belle to win. DALIO (7) is a horse you could easily imagine walking around the parade ring at Pimlico or Santa Anita, given he is by American Pharoah out of a Grade 1 Natalma Stakes-winning mare. He's also in-bred to Storm Cat but I digress because what matters most is that handles the Heavy, he is in great shape, he is at a trip he will relish and he has the draw and the jockey to convert. SUNSET PARK (3) hasn't put a foot wrong in her five starts and has won here over 2000m so she's itching to get out in trip again. BET: DALIO (7) to win. â– â– â– â– â–

Mornington trainer Shane Nichols expands stable with new training partner Hayden Black
Multiple Group 1-winning trainer Shane Nichols will take on a training partner in the coming weeks, but that doesn't mean the Mornington horseman will be slowing down any time soon. Nichols, the winner of three Group 1 races, said his stable foreman Hayden Black would be joining him in a training partnership. Nichols said Black had shown his qualities when leading the team through a difficult period in the past few months. 'I had a few health issues over the last few months and they have done a really great job when I haven't been around,' Nichols said. 'He's been with me for seven years and he deserves a go as a co-trainer. 'He'll come on board later this month, hopefully.' Nichols said the extra name on the stable door would not be a sign of him taking a back seat. 'I'm not working part-time, I'm going harder,' Nichols said. 'Someone said it was because of my impending retirement. 'Stuff that, I'm going solid.' Nichols and Black have reason to be confident of a profitable start to their partnership after the impressive return to racing of unbeaten filly Esha at The Valley last Saturday. She's well above average! Esha justifies the short quote with a dominant display at The Valley, she's two for two and on the up â� @LaneDamian @shanenicholsrac — 7HorseRacing ðŸ�Ž (@7horseracing) August 9, 2025 Esha progressed from a South Australian maiden win in March to a dominant frontrunning success in Melbourne Saturday three-year-old company, stamping herself as a stakes filly in the making. Nichols combined with Kia Ora Stud to pay $900,000 for Esha at a Gold Coast yearling sale last year. Group 1 Moir Stakes at The Valley on September 6.

‘Not handling it well': Rugby league icon Ray Warren's sad revelation about retirement
Rugby league icon Ray Warren has revealed he is not handling retirement well and has thought about coming out of retirement if he could call from his own loungeroom. Warren, 82, retired in 2021 after calling 99 State of Origin games and 45 NRL Grand Finals and resisted calls for him to come out of retirement to call one final Origin game last year. Known as the 'voice of rugby league', Warren's retirement in 2021 saddened the sporting world, namely fans of rugby league, and ever since there have been murmurs he could be convinced to make a return calling major events such as the NRL Grand Final or State of Origin. And on Monday, in a stunning revelation Warren said he had given it some thought as he opened up about why he decided to retire in the first place. 'I am not handling it (my retirement) all that well to be honest,' Warren told 2GB's Mark Levy. You can listen to Ray Warren open up about his retirement in the player above. 'Leaving what I was doing was like cutting off my arm. (But) I was 78 when I gave it away, so I didn't have much longer to go.' Warren also floated the idea that he could call a game from home, but fears it may tarnish his legacy. 'It is flattering (that people want him to come out of retirement) and I guess I love it deep down, but I don't think they realised I was 78 when I gave it away and I didn't want to undo all the good I might have done,' Warren said. 'That's the long and the short of it (why he retired). But now I sit down and think I might be able to do a call from home.' Games being called from TV or radio studios thousands of kilometres away from the venue has been something that has become increasingly popular in mainstream media since Covid. For many games in various sports, commentators no longer call from the grounds, instead preferring offices where they can access more angles. So if Warren was open to returning, it would be possible for him to finally call his 100th State of Origin game or make a special appearance from the comfort of his own home. It would also be something that would undoubtedly attract even more viewers, with the commentating legend adored by the rugby league world. Is it likely that Ray Warren comes out of retirement? The chances of it happening are slim. When Warren was cornered about potentially calling an Origin match in 2024, he promptly shut it down. 'I'd rule that out (a commentary return) almost without any thought at all,' Warren said on Triple M. 'I had a great career – 55 years. At the end of 2021, I decided that that would do me, why would I take that risk of undoing whatever good I might have done.' But never say never, NRL fans can at least dare to dream.
