Former NFL star is diagnosed with rare form of cancer as football legend makes huge donation for treatment

The NFL world is rallying around former star Bryan Braman after it was revealed that he's been diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer. Braman, 38, was signed by the Houston Texans as a free agent in 2011, before spending seven years in the NFL and later retiring with the Philadelphia Eagles. It was during his time with the Eagles - in 2017 - when Braman reached the Super Bowl and helped the side defeat the New England Patriots 41-33 on the night. Now, however, things are very different for the former defensive end after it was revealed that he's 'undergoing a Car-t cell reprogramming treatment program in Seattle'. Former NFL linebacker Emmanuel Acho took to X on Thursday to reveal the news and plead for donations from Eagles and NFL fans alike. He wrote: 'I'm sad it's taken me so long to see this. @Eagles fans, we need you to be teammates right now. 'My teammate & SB Champ, Bryan Braman is battling an extremely rare cancer He laid his body on the line for Philly, & now he needs Philly to survive'. Acho also provided a link to the GoFundMe which has been set up for Braman. A total of $46,495 has been raised already, at the time of writing. Among the donators is three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year JJ Watt, who contributed a stunning $10,000 to the fund. The description for Braman's GoFundMe reads: 'Bryan is home with his family after undergoing a Car-t cell reprogramming treatment program in Seattle. 'With the cancer that Bryan has, which is a VERY rare form of cancer, the Car-t treatment had the highest chance of success as the cells are reprogrammed to fight this cancer that is within Bryan. 'Bryan has had to undergo several surgical procedures. The main problem has been that Bryan has not been able to recover from the procedures because of his lowered immunity due to all of these treatments. 'The Dr's are now concerned because of his treatment, his chemo options are very limited. They have tried all of the various treatment options, and unfortunately, none of them are working against this cancer. 'But Bryan has not given up. He is looking into other trial treatment programs, and is determined to never give up'. Further details, provided by organizer William Jones, read: 'I am trying to raise $15,000 to pay for housing for him, his caregiver, and his uncle as they all live together. 'He is also in need of food or meal cards. Restaurant gift cards would be great in addition to any cash donations anyone can afford to help with'.

Former NFL linebacker Bryan Braman battling ‘very rare' cancer

Bryan Braman, who spent seven years in the NFL and won a Super Bowl with the Eagles in February 2018, has been battling a 'life threatening' and 'very rare' cancer, according to a GoFundMe page. While the fundraiser didn't list the specific cancer, Braman, 38, underwent CAR T-cell therapy in Seattle as part of a 12-week treatment program and needed to sell his final car — while also not owning a home — to pay for a motel to stay in and for the treatment. William Jones, the organizer, created the page in February and shared an update on June 20 that said Braman was back with family, but has encountered obstacles recovering from multiple surgeries as a result of his 'lowered immunity due to all of these treatments.' 'The Dr's are now concerned because of his treatment, his chemo options are very limited. They have tried all of the various treatment options, and unfortunately, none of them are working against this cancer. 'But Bryan has not given up. He is looking into other trial treatment programs, and is determined to never give up.' Advertisement The page — with a fundraising goal of $25,000 — had raised over $38,000 as of Friday morning, including a $10,000 donation from former Texans teammate J.J. Watt. 'Bryan will be able to get the necessities for his diet,' Jones wrote in the June 20 update. 'He needs to keep up his energy through his diet, and his foods/vitamins are extremely expensive, as are fresh juices which are what he needs. These donations will also go along [sic] way too [sic] help cover some of the treatment costs that are not covered by insurances. That has greatly helped Bryan to not have to focus on those, and now he can relaxe [sic] and recuperate.' Braman, a linebacker and Spokane, Wash. native, signed with the Texans in 2011 as an undrafted free agent out of West Texas A&M and spent the first three years of his career in Houston, mostly carving out a special teams role. The Philadelphia Eagles capped off the 2024 NFL season with the franchise's second Lombardi Trophy, defeating the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX. Advertisement The Eagles won their first Super Bowl back in the 2017 NFL season, knocking off Tom Brady and the New England Patriots. During that run, former defensive end Bryan Braman may have had the best moment of his NFL career, blocking an Atlanta Falcons punt in the Divisional Round. Now, over seven years removed from his Super Bowl win, Braman has been diagnosed with a "very rare form of cancer" at only 38 years old. A GoFundMe fundraiser called "Donate to Bryan Braman's Healing Journey" was started in light of the diagnosis, with a goal of $25,000. At the time of this article, donations exceeded $20,000. Even his former Houston Texans teammate, J.J. Watt, pitched in $10,000. While the treatment initially showed promise, the cancer has since returned and is spreading rapidly. But due to his compromised immune system and previous treatments, his chemotherapy options are now limited. Advertisement Despite this, Braman remains hopeful and is exploring potential options, including trial treatments. Recent donations have helped him afford dietary needs and treatment costs. "I would like to take this moment to thank ALL of the donors that have come forward and donated, no matter the size," the GoFundMe read. "Every dollar came in at the exact time, to cover the next expense, as they came along." Braman started his career with the Texans after going undrafted in 2011. He spent three seasons there before joining the Eagles for another three in 2014. After his first stint in Philadelphia, Braman joined the New Orleans Saints before being placed on injured reserve, getting released one week later.
