Former NFL star is diagnosed with rare form of cancer as football legend makes huge donation for treatment

Daily Mail7 hours ago
The NFL world is rallying around former star Bryan Braman after it was revealed that he's been diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer.
Braman, 38, was signed by the Houston Texans as a free agent in 2011, before spending seven years in the NFL and later retiring with the Philadelphia Eagles.
It was during his time with the Eagles - in 2017 - when Braman reached the Super Bowl and helped the side defeat the New England Patriots 41-33 on the night.
Now, however, things are very different for the former defensive end after it was revealed that he's 'undergoing a Car-t cell reprogramming treatment program in Seattle'.
Former NFL linebacker Emmanuel Acho took to X on Thursday to reveal the news and plead for donations from Eagles and NFL fans alike.
He wrote: 'I'm sad it's taken me so long to see this. @Eagles fans, we need you to be teammates right now.
'My teammate & SB Champ, Bryan Braman is battling an extremely rare cancer He laid his body on the line for Philly, & now he needs Philly to survive'.
Acho also provided a link to the GoFundMe which has been set up for Braman. A total of $46,495 has been raised already, at the time of writing.
Among the donators is three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year JJ Watt, who contributed a stunning $10,000 to the fund.
The description for Braman's GoFundMe reads: 'Bryan is home with his family after undergoing a Car-t cell reprogramming treatment program in Seattle.
'With the cancer that Bryan has, which is a VERY rare form of cancer, the Car-t treatment had the highest chance of success as the cells are reprogrammed to fight this cancer that is within Bryan.
'Bryan has had to undergo several surgical procedures. The main problem has been that Bryan has not been able to recover from the procedures because of his lowered immunity due to all of these treatments.
'The Dr's are now concerned because of his treatment, his chemo options are very limited. They have tried all of the various treatment options, and unfortunately, none of them are working against this cancer.
'But Bryan has not given up. He is looking into other trial treatment programs, and is determined to never give up'.
Further details, provided by organizer William Jones, read: 'I am trying to raise $15,000 to pay for housing for him, his caregiver, and his uncle as they all live together.
'He is also in need of food or meal cards. Restaurant gift cards would be great in addition to any cash donations anyone can afford to help with'.

Too soon to say if Mbappe will start against Dortmund, Alonso says

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey, July 4 (Reuters) - It is too soon to say whether Kylian Mbappe will start in Real Madrid's Club World Cup quarter-final match against Borussia Dortmund on Saturday, coach Xabi Alonso said, as the French forward continues his recovery from gastroenteritis. Mbappe made his tournament debut on Tuesday as Real Madrid edged Juventus 1-0 to reach the quarter-finals after missing all of the group stage. "He's getting better. He's been improving over the last three days," Alonso told reporters at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Friday. "Tomorrow morning we will be deciding if he will be part of the initial 11." Mbappe came off the bench as a substitute in the second half of the Spanish side's 1-0 win over Juventus in Miami on Tuesday, earning wild applause in a scene that underscored his global appeal at the U.S.-hosted tournament. Mbappe was briefly hospitalised early in the tournament, isolated from his teammates as he recovered. Alonso's team have leaned on Gonzalo Garcia to deputise in his absence, as the 21-year-old academy graduate has recorded three goals - including Tuesday's winner - and an assist in a breakout performance at the competition. "I think (Garcia and Mbappe) could complement each other and if it's something that is required, it's not something I'm going to turn a blind eye to," said Alonso. They face a Dortmund team in solid form on Saturday, after the German side held off a stirring second-half fightback from Monterrey 2-1 this week to book their spot in the final eight. "Dortmund is a very good team. As soon as (coach Niko Kovac) was at the helm, they were growing and developing and on the rise," said Alonso. "We are facing a tough opponent... It's gonna be tight tomorrow."

She was transported as a 'trauma alert,' which means she may have sustained life-threatening injuries. The girl was with two adults. First responders treated them at the scene, and they refused additional medical treatment, according to Bay News 9. Kyree Mejias told 10 Tampa Bay he witnessed the lightning strike while at St. Pete Beach with his family. 'It was so close to us, we could see the flash,' Mejias said. I can't move,' the teen recounted to CBS News New York. 'So I'm just kind of locked in my body for a second until I get into the ambulance and I feel everyone trying to shake me.' "Apparently, I'm pretty lucky, because my spine was directly against the tree and no nerve damage happened,' he added.

US government plans to breed millions of flies to combat a pest in Texas

The US government plans to breed and release millions of sterile screwworm flies in Texas and Mexico to combat the re-emergence of the flesh-eating insect. The New World Screwworm lays eggs in the open wounds of warm-blooded animals, including livestock and humans, with the hatched larvae burrowing into flesh and potentially killing the host. The strategy involves breeding flies, irradiating them to induce sterility, and then releasing them so that sterile males mate with wild females, leading to unfertilized eggs and a reduction in the screwworm population. Screwworms were previously thought to have been eradicated in the US by 1966 using a similar sterile insect technique, but have recently re-emerged in Texas following an outbreak in Mexico. To support this new program, a breeding factory will open in southern Mexico next July, followed by a distribution center in southern Texas to manage the release of the sterile Flies.
