KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 11 — A special nine-member task force from the Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has been deployed to Sabah to take over the investigation into Zara Qairina Mahathir's case. In a statement, the Office of the Inspector-General of Police Secretariat (Corporate Communications) said the deployment is part of the Royal Malaysia Police's (PDRM) commitment to ensure a transparent, professional, and thorough investigation. 'PDRM views every loss of life seriously. As such, we urge the public to allow the authorities to carry out their duties professionally and to refrain from making any speculation that could disrupt the investigation process,' the statement read. The AGC stated that there is a need for further investigation to be carried out by PDRM to ensure that all aspects of the case can be thoroughly examined. The exhumation of the 13-year-old's body at the Tanjung Ubi Muslim Cemetery, Kampung Mesapol was done on Saturday, and subsequently transported to Queen Elizabeth I Hospital in Kota Kinabalu. The remains were reburied at the same cemetery early this morning. Zara Qairina was confirmed dead at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, on July 17. The student had been taken to the hospital after being found severely injured and unconscious in a drain near her school dormitory in Papar at 4am on July 16. — Bernama

[UPDATED] Armed robber with record of 44 offences shot dead in Bukit Tunku
KUALA LUMPUR: A suspected armed robber with a record of 44 criminal and drug offences was shot dead after a shootout with police. The incident occurred at about 4.10am today along Jalan Bukit Tunku, said Bukit Aman acting Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk Fadil Marsus. Fadil said the incident happened during "Op Api KL 3", a joint operation involving the Bukit Aman CID and Kuala Lumpur police. "Police were monitoring the 36-year-old suspect, who had a record of 44 prior offences including robbery, violent crime, house break-in, and drug-related offences," he said. "We believe this suspect was the ringleader of a group comprising over a dozen others," Fadil said. The gang was believed to be the mastermind behind house break-ins and drug trafficking in Kuala Lumpur, Perak, and Selangor since last year. Fadil said the suspect was conducting surveillance for a target house to rob when the shooting took place. During an interception attempt, a shootout ensued, and the suspect was killed at the scene. A revolver believed to have been used in the shootout was seized, and police vehicles were hit by several bullets. "Checks revealed the suspect drove a vehicle with a fake registration plate and was believed to have been smuggled in from abroad," he said. Investigations revealed the gang targeted houses or business premises with safes, gold bars, and cash and were also believed to impersonate police officers. Fadil said the gang was also believed to be involved in drug distribution. Efforts to track down the remaining members are ongoing, and the suspect's body has been sent to Kuala Lumpur Hospital.
