‘Always Work On Your Next Move'—Kandi Burruss Talks Leaving ‘Housewives,' Broadway Wins, And Her Mogul Mindset
Source: MorrisDe Photography / MorrisDe Photography Crossposted from Last year, Kandi Burruss turned the page on her iconic 14-season run on The Real Housewives of Atlanta —announcing she would not return for Season 16. That said, she's as busy as ever. The multihyphenate mogul keeps a full plate, with no shortage of projects in motion. By now, Kandi's expansive body of work speaks for itself. She's a multiplatinum, Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter, TV personality, actress, restaurateur, and Tony-nominated Broadway producer. Her impact on the culture resonates through music, television, and now the world of theater. Whether she's in the spotlight or behind the scenes, one thing fuels her staying power—Kandi is a phenomenal businesswoman. She spoke with iOne Digital from Atlanta to reflect on life after Housewives , her passion for Broadway, and the mantra guiding her journey. We care about your data. See our privacy policy. This fall, Burruss will receive the Wifetime Achievement Award at BravoCon in Las Vegas, celebrating her enduring run on the Housewives franchise. It's a fitting tribute marking the end of an era she helped define. 'Walking away from something that you had been a part of for 14 seasons is not easy, you know? But I feel good about my decision,' she said. 'I took the leap of faith to say, okay, that part of my life is behind me.' Source: MorrisDe Photography / MorrisDe Photography Despite leaving the show, Burruss is still in the mix, appearing on Bravo's Next Gen NYC alongside her daughter, Riley Burruss. 'I'm really excited for her. I've been doing my best to guide her hard-headed behind,' the mom of three said with a laugh. As for her advice to 22-year-old Riley—who stars alongside other twenty-somethings navigating young adulthood in New York City—Kandi kept it simple, 'Whatever you say, whatever you do—just stand on it. There's nothing you can do that'll make me not love you and support you. Just be a woman of integrity. Don't let them roll the tapes back on you, showing you lying! I've never been that person, and I don't want you to be that person.' Since stepping away from RHOA , Burruss hasn't slowed down, with little time to reflect. She'd braced herself for 'FOMO' (fear of missing out) once the new season began airing. 'But what helped is that I always have a lot going on,' she said. 'I didn't feel like I was missing out because I had other things to keep my mind occupied.' While the show was filming in 2024, Kandi was on the road with Xscape and SWV for the 30-city Queens of R&B Tour . That same year, she joined the production team for the record-breaking Broadway revival of Othello , starring Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal. Broadway has become another space where Kandi thrives. Before Othello , Burruss co-produced the 2024 revival of the beloved classic, The Wiz , another standout success in her producing journey. She graduated from Tri-Cities High School in East Point, Georgia—the starting point for a long list of famed alumni including André 3000, Big Boi, Kenan Thompson, and her fellow Xscape members Tameka 'Tiny' Harris, Tamika Scott, and LaTocha Scott-Bivens, to name a few. 'My love for theater happened in my high school years. I always felt like this is something that I wanted to do.' Other Tri-Cities graduates who made their mark on Broadway—like actress and singer Saycon Sengbloh and sound designer Justin Ellington (who worked on Othello )—inspired Kandi to 'really go after it' in recent years. Kandi made her Broadway debut in 2018, playing Mama Morton in Chicago . During the pandemic, she shifted behind the scenes as a producer on Thoughts of a Colored Man . 'I just wanted to be back in that world,' she said. 'Every business that I've been a part of, I start off as one of the talent—but I'm always curious about how the behind the scenes work.' She went on to co-produce The Piano Lesson , earning a Tony nomination in 2023 for Best Revival of a Play. Burruss understands the power of her platform and how to connect with audiences—not only as a performer, but as a producer. By drawing on her wide-reaching fanbase, she's helping usher new patrons into Broadway venues that haven't always felt inclusive. 'I've seen the audience change from when I first started,' she said, reflecting on the mostly white ticketholders who'd fill the seats. 'But now, a lot of people in the crowd are people of color, Black people. It's so cool to see so many people—and not just from New York—flying in from everywhere to come and support our shows.' Source: MorrisDe Photography / MorrisDe Photography With a constant flow of ventures in her ecosystem, Burruss is always thinking several steps ahead. 'I realized a long time ago that you could be on top of the world, but as soon as you take your foot off the pedal, people will be like, 'Oh, they used to be so dope.'' Her cousin had a saying, 'Well, used-to-bee's don't make no honey, so don't nobody care what you used to be .' Kandi laughed, 'She wasn't trying to be mean, but she don't know how her words stuck!' It's this mindset that keeps the mogul moving forward. 'Always work on your next move while you're in your current move. If you look at the past decade or so, I'm always working on something, trying to figure out how to make the next opportunity. Being a Black woman in any business, you don't want to wait for somebody to give opportunity to you. It's better when you can make the opportunity.' With her legacy in motion, she's not done yet. Already a Grammy winner with Tony and Emmy nods under her belt, she's got her eye on achieving EGOT status—a rare distinction for those who've won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony. 'My dream is definitely attainable if I keep going,' she affirmed. As Kandi embraces this new chapter, she continues to shape culture not just by showing up—but by building the stage itself. Kandi Burruss makes host Steve Harvey blush with raunchy answer on Celebrity Family Feud
Don't miss out on the headlines from TV. Followed categories will be added to My News. Celebrity Family Feud Season 11 is in full swing. Hosted by the Steve Harvey, the long-running ABC game show in the US has been blessed with some incredible stars. So far, audiences have seen the families of Taraji P. Henson and Jennifer Hudson face off against each other. The casts of General Hospital and The Young and the Restless delighted viewers with their friendly (and not-so-friendly at times) rivalry. But this week's episode is for Bravo fans. Former Real Housewives Of Atlanta star Kandi Burruss and current Real Housewives Of Beverly Hills star Kyle Richards have brought some of their loved ones along to duke it out as they try to win money for charity. Former Real Housewives of Beverly Hills Kandi Burruss gave a raunchy answer when asked about bald men on Celebrity Family Feud. MORE: Real Housewives of Sydney's secret stash On Team Kyle, playing for Nami (National Alliance on Mental Illness), are Richards' four daughters: Farrah Aldjufrie, Alexia Umansky, Sophia Umansky and Portia Umansky. On Team Kandi, playing for Kandi Cares (Burruss' own charity), are Burruss' daughter Riley Burruss; Burruss' stepdaughter Kaela Tucker; Burruss' cousin Kight Dallas; and, Kandi Koated Entertainment GM DonJuan Clark. Anything can happen when these two celebrity teams try to glean what the 'survey said.' The reality TV star couldn't help but crack up after she answered the question. In this exclusive clip from tonight's episode, Burruss and her team are now are in control of the question. Harvey stands by team captain Burruss to playfully pose the question: 'We asked 100 women: name something you do to a bald man's head to get him in the mood.' Burruss, who has never been shy about sharing details of her sex life, winces and grits her teeth as she thinks of an answer. 'Oh, man,' says Burruss. 'Um, I'm gonna say straddle it.' Host Steve Harvey, who is a bald man himself, did not know how to take her answer. Immediately, the crowd begins to hoot and holler. With a big grin, Burruss turns to the audience as they cheer for her raunchy response. Burruss' daughters can only giggle. Harvey, a bald man himself, takes a minute as he lets Burruss' steamy guess settle in. 'You know when you hear something and you don't know what to do?' Harvey asks the audience as he squirms. Harvey collects himself and continues. 'That is such a Kandi answer, though.' Aware of the fact that she only knows how to be herself, Burruss just laughs and nods. Harvey turns to the board and yells 'Straddle it,' as a big red X flashes on the screen, indicating that Burruss' guess was not one of the top 5 responses from the survey. Kandi Burruss Reacts to Her 'Othello' Revival Getting Snubbed by Tony Awards: 'Of Course I'm Disappointed'
Kandi Burruss says she is "disappointed" over Broadway's revival, which she co-produced with husband Todd Tucker, being snubbed by the Tony Awards The revival of the William Shakespeare tragedy stars Denzel Washington as Othello and Jake Gyllenhaal as Iago set Broadway box office records, making $2.8 million in one week of previews, and is the highest-grossing play of all time on Broadway Kandi Burruss is remaining positive in the wake of Broadway's Othello not being nominated for any 2025 Tony Awards. Burruss, 48, who co-produced the revival with husband Todd Tucker, took to Instagram to voice her dismay over the production's snub. "Well y'all… Othello didn't get the Tony nomination. Of course I'm disappointed, but I'm still beyond proud to be part of this phenomenal production. Every time I watch our cast, I'm blown away and inspired," the singer, who previously earned a Tony nod for producing the 2022 revival of The Piano Lesson, wrote. Directed by Kenny Leon, the revival of the William Shakespeare tragedy stars Denzel Washington as Othello and Jake Gyllenhaal as Iago. The production broke Broadway box office records, making $2.8 million in one week of previews, the highest weekly gross for a Broadway play. "#DenzelWashington @jakegyllenhaal — you both are delivering a masterclass in acting every single night. Truly unforgettable performances," Burruss said of the play's leading men, while also congratulating "all the nominees" for this year's Tony Awards. Never miss a story — sign up for to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories. The Grammy winner kept things positive at the end of her post, writing that she's "already focused on what's next" and "not giving up on the dream." "'Tell Me No' by Whitney Houston (co-written by yours truly 😉✍🏾) is on repeat right now… and it hits different today," Burruss said, mentioning the Whitney Houston track she co-wrote for the late singer's fifth studio album, Just Whitney. "To anyone chasing a dream — don't let a 'no' stop your yes. The journey continues," Burruss concluded her post. Related: Denzel Washington Reacts to Those Ticket Prices for Othello on Broadway: 'God Has Blessed Me with a Great Ability' Amid the Shakespearean revival's success, the production has also been criticized for its hefty ticket prices — with some tickets selling for upwards of $900. The play's helmer weighed in on the high ticket prices in an interview with the Daily Mail, comparing seeing the show to watching an L.A. Lakers game or watching a Beyoncé concert. 'So to me, with a commercial industry, people are paying what they think it's worth,' Leon said. 'A guy showed up the other night and he said, 'I paid $921 for this ticket and you know what? I don't want a cent back. I want to figure out how to come back.'' 'That's what I feel proud of every night,' he continued. 'I have a thousand people in there and it's so diverse… I'm proud of the box office and I'm proud of what's on the stage.' The 2025 Tony nominees for best revival of a play are Romeo + Juliet, Thornton Wilder's Our Town, Yellow Face and Eureka Day. Cynthia Erivo is hosting the ceremony, which will air live on CBS and Paramount+ on June 8. Read the original article on People

Former ‘RHOA' star dismissed from $200,000 lawsuit saying her restaurant owes unpaid rent
Former 'Real Housewives of Atlanta' star Kandi Burruss has had all claims against her dismissed by the landlord of her Atlanta restaurant that alleged she owed unpaid rent. According to court documents filed last week, Montego Pacific, Inc. told the court it was no longer pursuing claims against Burrus. 'The basis for [Montego's] claims against [Burruss] was that she executed a personal guaranty of a commercial lease in favor of [Montego],' a lawyer for Montego said. In the original lawsuit, Montego Pacific Inc. said Burruss and the restaurant owed $154,139.17 in back rent. Montego Pacific Inc. said the restaurant also owed another '$56,495.75 for repairs to the Premises and the 10% overhead fee, exclusive of interest.' TRENDING STORIES: Kohl's store in Gwinnett County is one of 27 stores closing for good this weekend 22-year-old says she started Floyd County wildfire because she was mad at her dad, report says Armed robbers violently attack man on Atlanta Beltline near skate park According to InTouch Magazine, the lawsuit will continue against Burrus Tucker Restaurant Group, run by Burruss and her husband, Todd Tucker, and Blaze Steakhouse. Burruss talked about the lawsuit earlier this week, saying that her name was added for publicity and the claims against her would be dropped shortly. 'It was just a disagreement between us and the landlord,' Burruss said. 'But to let you know, they had to drop my name off so…I think they just put my name on there anyway so that they could get publicity for the lawsuit.' 'The rest is being worked out because it really was a disagreement about some repairs that they made and then who would be responsible for it,' Burruss said. 'So, we were just going back and forth about that, basically, and that's why it turned out into what it turned into. But it looks like we're gonna come to some agreement … so it'll be fine.' Burruss, who was one of the longest-tenured cast members on RHOA, opened the restaurant in southwest Atlanta in 2020 with her husband. Burruss and her husband also have a comfort food restaurant called Old Lady Gang that opened in Castleberry Hill in 2017.
