Kandi Burruss Reacts to Her 'Othello' Revival Getting Snubbed by Tony Awards: 'Of Course I'm Disappointed'

Kandi Burruss says she is "disappointed" over Broadway's revival, which she co-produced with husband Todd Tucker, being snubbed by the Tony Awards
The revival of the William Shakespeare tragedy stars Denzel Washington as Othello and Jake Gyllenhaal as Iago
set Broadway box office records, making $2.8 million in one week of previews, and is the highest-grossing play of all time on Broadway
Kandi Burruss is remaining positive in the wake of Broadway's Othello not being nominated for any 2025 Tony Awards.
Burruss, 48, who co-produced the revival with husband Todd Tucker, took to Instagram to voice her dismay over the production's snub.
"Well y'all… Othello didn't get the Tony nomination. Of course I'm disappointed, but I'm still beyond proud to be part of this phenomenal production. Every time I watch our cast, I'm blown away and inspired," the singer, who previously earned a Tony nod for producing the 2022 revival of The Piano Lesson, wrote.
Directed by Kenny Leon, the revival of the William Shakespeare tragedy stars Denzel Washington as Othello and Jake Gyllenhaal as Iago. The production broke Broadway box office records, making $2.8 million in one week of previews, the highest weekly gross for a Broadway play.
"#DenzelWashington @jakegyllenhaal — you both are delivering a masterclass in acting every single night. Truly unforgettable performances," Burruss said of the play's leading men, while also congratulating "all the nominees" for this year's Tony Awards.

The Grammy winner kept things positive at the end of her post, writing that she's "already focused on what's next" and "not giving up on the dream."
"'Tell Me No' by Whitney Houston (co-written by yours truly 😉✍🏾) is on repeat right now… and it hits different today," Burruss said, mentioning the Whitney Houston track she co-wrote for the late singer's fifth studio album, Just Whitney.
"To anyone chasing a dream — don't let a 'no' stop your yes. The journey continues," Burruss concluded her post.

Amid the Shakespearean revival's success, the production has also been criticized for its hefty ticket prices — with some tickets selling for upwards of $900.
The play's helmer weighed in on the high ticket prices in an interview with the Daily Mail, comparing seeing the show to watching an L.A. Lakers game or watching a Beyoncé concert.
'So to me, with a commercial industry, people are paying what they think it's worth,' Leon said. 'A guy showed up the other night and he said, 'I paid $921 for this ticket and you know what? I don't want a cent back. I want to figure out how to come back.''
'That's what I feel proud of every night,' he continued. 'I have a thousand people in there and it's so diverse… I'm proud of the box office and I'm proud of what's on the stage.'
The 2025 Tony nominees for best revival of a play are Romeo + Juliet, Thornton Wilder's Our Town, Yellow Face and Eureka Day. Cynthia Erivo is hosting the ceremony, which will air live on CBS and Paramount+ on June 8.

How to watch the 2025 Tony Awards live online, on a phone, or on TV, including free options

Start spreading the news: Theater's biggest night is happening this evening (Sunday, June 8, 2025) in the Big Apple. The 78th Tony Awards will showcase this season's best theatrical moments, from revivals to new works, from 8 to 11 p.m. ET. Let's catch up on all the drama and how to stream the event live as the curtain rises at Radio City Music Hall. Who is nominated? Three musicals are tied for most Tony nominations this year. Buena Vista Social Club is inspired by real life events and tells the story of the four musicians in Havana, Cuba, who continue to play music despite a turbulent political climate. The Korean musical Maybe Happy Ending tells the futuristic story of two lonely abandoned helper bots who manage to find connection despite isolation. TikTok sound-bite sensation Death Becomes Her is based on the 1992 Robert Zemeckis movie of the same name. Meanwhile, two plays boast seven nominations each. Kimberly Belflower's play John Proctor Is the Villain takes a fresh look at Arthur Miller's classic play The Crucible and the historic Salem witch trials. Jez Butterworth's The Hills of California centers on the estranged Webb sisters who reunite to care for their aging mother and are forced to face past family secrets and traumas. Cole Escola's comedy Oh, Mary!, a farcical portrayal of Mary Todd Lincoln, boasts five nominations. On the musical revival sides of things, it is a tight race between Sunset Blvd and Gypsy. Many critics believe the winner of Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical category is between Nicole Scherzinger and Audra McDonald. You can see the full list of nominees here. Who is hosting? Movie Elphaba herself Cynthia Erivo will host the festivities this year. She has her very own Tony for her work as Celie in the 2016 revival of The Color Purple. Fans are eager to see the conclusion of Wicked later this year, so maybe this will tide them over. Brian Stokes Mitchell's smooth voice will help keep things moving as he is serving as the offstage announcer. Who is presenting? Many theater greats will help present awards. These include Aaron Tveit, Adam Lambert, Allison Janney, Ariana DeBose, Danielle Brooks, Kelli O'Hara, Kristin Chenoweth, LaTanya Richardson Jackson, Lea Michele, Lea Salonga, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Sara Bareilles, and Sarah Paulson to name a few. Who is performing? It's tradition (cue Fiddler on the Roof ) for nominated musicals and revivals to perform at the ceremony. This means that beyond the ones already mentioned, you can expect performances from Dead Outlaw, Operation Mincemeat: A New Musical, Floyd Collins, Gypsy, Pirates! The Penzance Musical, Sunset Blvd, Just In Time, and Real Women Have Curves. Beyond the present, Broadway loves to celebrate its past successes. It's almost as if history has its eyes on the industry. Lin-Manuel Miranda, Leslie Odom Jr., Christopher Jackson, Jonathan Groff, Ariana DeBose, Daveed Diggs, Phillipa Soo, and many other original cast members will reunite to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Hamilton's Broadway debut at the Richard Rodgers Theatre. This special performance is not to be missed. What special Tony Award moments can audiences expect? Two new special awards have already been announced. The musicians in the band of Buena Vista Social Club will receive special awards as will the technical effects of Stranger Things: The First Shadow. Harvey Fierstein will be presented the 2025 Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre. His impressive resume includes work as an actor and writer on projects ranging from La Cage aux Folles to Newsies. The 2025 Isabelle Stevenson Tony Award will be presented to Celia Keenan-Bolger for her offstage advocacy work. She has championed many important causes, such as hunger, same-sex-marriage rights, and arts education. She also works as an end-of-life doula, helping the late Broadway star Gavin Creel transition peacefully at the end of his life. If you just can't get enough Broadway action, tune into Pluto TV early for the pre-show 'The Tony Awards: Act One,' hosted by Darren Criss and Renée Elise Goldsberry, which begins at 6:40-8:00 p.m. ET.

Dad Makes Baby Girl 'Apologize' to Every Passenger After 8-Hour Flight

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A family has gone viral after playfully getting their baby daughter to "apologize" to passengers after a long-haul flight. Hannah Chestnut, originally from London in the UK, and her husband Joseph, from Ohio, are proud parents to five-month-old twin baby girls, which can make family life slightly chaotic. Despite this, Chestnut told Newsweek: "We've decided we're going to travel with them and not be deterred by the fact that we have young babies." Traveling with babies can be stressful for the parents, but after a recent trip with their daughters, Chestnut captured a sweet moment between her husband, daughter Ava, and the other passengers—as the baby girl apologized "face-to-face" to her fellow travelers. Instagram @themumcrew Posted to Chestnut's Instagram page @themumcrew on May 28, the video showed Joseph holding Ava, dressed all in pink and with a grin on her face, as passengers disembarked the eight-hour flight from London to Atlanta. Ava faces the queue leaving the aircraft, as some of them shoot smiles back at her, with Chestnut writing over the clip: "We told her she had to apologize to everyone face-to-face for what she put them through on the flight." The sweet video racked up more than 67,000 likes, as one commenter joked: "She look at everyone like 'and I'll do it again. Watch this.'" No. She just smiled that gummy little heart-melting smile and everyone just forgave her." And one recalled a story from when her own daughter was a toddler, and once "tried to take a bite out of a stranger's burger on our flight to Cancun. Still amazed at how gracious our fellow passengers were!" Chestnut explained to Newsweek that on this particular flight, their daughters had not been "too fussy," but while waiting for their stroller and car seats "Ava kept smiling at all the other passengers as they got off the plane. So I decided to film it as her apologizing to all of them." She added: "Ironically, on the flight right after the one we got off of in the video, Ava was super loud and upset, so that was the flight we actually should've filmed the video after!" While flying with babies can be difficult, there are things parents can do to help it go as smoothly as possible. Booking an evening flight can increase the chance of the baby sleeping through the journey, and opting for longer layover times between connecting flights can help the baby or young child expend energy before the next flight, according to Pampers. Instagram @themumcrew Sharing a sweet detail about her family of four, Chestnut revealed she and her husband were born on the very same day in 1992, "on opposite sides of the Atlantic, only hours apart." "And then 32 years later we had twins, which means our family of four only has two birthdays between all of us." Reacting to the huge online response to her video, she added: "It's been so fun to see the video go viral, and we never expected such a silly moment to reach so many people so quickly."
