Mumbai at 6th place among 97 cities globally in under-construction data centre capacity: report
New Delhi, Jun 3 (PTI) Mumbai ranks 6th among 97 cities globally in data centre capacities under construction, according to Cushman & Wakefield. Virginia is in first position with 1,834 MW data centre capacity under construction, followed by Atlanta (1,078 MW), Columbus (546 MW), Dallas (500 MW) and Phoenix (478 MW). Mumbai ranks 6th globally in under-construction data centre capacity. "At the end of 2024, the city had 335 MW of data centre capacity under construction, which, once completed, will expand its operational capacity by 62 per cent," real estate consultant Cushman & Wakefield (C&W) said. Austin/San Antonio ranks 7th (325MW), Reno 8th (305MW), London 9th (265MW) and Dublin (249 MW), according to C&W's latest 'Global Data Center Market Comparison' report 2025. The report, covering 97 global markets, attributes this growth to surging demand fuelled by the expansion of cloud computing and AI workloads. Key factors shaping data centre development include power availability, land access, and supporting infrastructure. "Mumbai leads the APAC region with 335 MW of data centre capacity under construction and ranks among the top 10 global markets by this metric. Once completed, this will expand the city's operational market size by 62 per cent," Gautam Saraf, Executive Managing Director - Mumbai & New Business, India at Cushman & Wakefield, said. He noted that several factors are driving this momentum - a strong digital backbone, a reliable power supply, and sustained demand from hyperscalers. "As India's financial capital and economic hub, Mumbai already accounts for over half of the country's data centre capacity and continues to attract major global operators," Saraf said. Key enablers include 12 cable landing stations, the recent MIST cable landing, and a robust pipeline of upcoming infrastructure, he said. "While challenges around land availability and power persist in certain locations, the city's long-term fundamentals remain highly compelling for sustained growth," Saraf said.

Rs40b scandal exposes gaps in govt depts
The largest financial scandal in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa's history — amounting to a staggering Rs40 billionhas left government departments reeling, as they failed to provide satisfactory answers before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of the K-P Assembly. Departments including Finance, Accountant General's Office, and Communication & Works (C&W) were unable to present complete documentation or convince committee members of their performance regarding embezzlement in Upper Kohistan. During the high-level meeting chaired by Assembly Speaker Babar Saleem Swati, department representatives mostly shifted blame onto each other. The speaker criticized the departments for their poor coordination, emphasizing that this is not just a Rs40 billion scandal, but likely part of a broader corruption network potentially reaching Rs500-600 billion. In contrast, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) earned praise for recovering Rs20 billion from the misappropriated funds. Speaker Swati highlighted this as a rare case where no political figures are implicated, and said the scandal involves deep-rooted institutional corruption, especially within the AG Office, Finance Department, and C&W. Despite the magnitude of the corruption, only two officials were suspended initially. The PAC ordered the suspension of additional officials across the involved departments. The AG's office was instructed to suspend two more officers within three days and initiate further action. Finance and C&W were also directed to identify and penalize more employees. The AG claimed NAB had taken all records related to Upper Kohistan and had not returned them. However, NAB clarified that it only takes copies of documents, not originals. The Speaker reprimanded the AG for overstepping boundaries and insisted the office should have maintained copies. The C&W Secretary revealed that an internal inquiry had led to the suspension of seven officials, but the PAC demanded all SDOs and XENs from 2019 to 2024 be suspended. The Speaker added that even check signatories must be held accountable. Contractors operating under fake companies are to be blacklisted, along with their beneficiaries. DG Audit Sirajul Haq informed the committee that over Rs21 billion in irregularities were detected last year alone, and more discrepancies worth Rs6 billion were found in 18 districts. He stressed the need to audit a full decade's worth of records from Kohistan, promising a complete report by December. A heated exchange also erupted between PPP MPA Ahmad Karim Kundi and Finance Advisor Muzzammil Aslam, with Kundi demanding Aslam's resignation. Aslam denied any involvement in the scandal, asserting his department's innocence. The session concluded with warnings that no department or officer would be spared accountability. Speaker Swati summed up the sentiment: "This isn't just theftit's systematic institutional failure."

Also Read: Bengaluru witnesses 28% drop in gross office space leasing in Q1 2025: C&W Pan-India construction activities slowed down by 39% in a quarter and 12% over the previous year. This slowdown can be attributed to the absence of new supply in Hyderabad and minimal supply additions in Chennai, Mumbai, and Kolkata during Q1 2025, Vestian said. "Despite a quarterly decline of 3% in value terms, the share of Bengaluru in pan-India absorption increased to 23% in Q1 2025 from 19% a quarter earlier. Similarly, the share of Mumbai also rose marginally by one percentage point to 22% in Q1 2025 despite an 11% decline in value terms," it said. Bengaluru's share increased from 21% in the previous quarter, whereas Pune's share rose from 15%. Despite robust demand, Vestian said the stock is expected to rise further in 2025 due to a strong pipeline of upcoming supply in the city. Since 2020, the city has recorded 59 million sq ft of new completions and 48.5 million sq ft of office space absorption. 'India's office market maintained its growth momentum in Q1 2025, driven by sustained demand across the major office markets in India. Even though the absorption decreased over the previous quarter, demand for office spaces by GCCs, IT-ITeS, BFSI, and Flex Spaces is expected to swell in the forthcoming quarters," Shrinivas Rao, FRICS, CEO, Vestian, said.
