7th HEAVEN May Be the Latest '90s Show to Get a Reboot

When you think of the WB network, you probably think of iconic '90s/early 2000s shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Dawson's Creek, and Smallville. But the longest-running WB show, and their biggest ratings grabber, was the wholesome family drama 7th Heaven. The show, about a California minister and his rather large family, ran for a whopping eleven seasons. It outlasted the WB itself, and finished its run on the CW. Now, according to Deadline, the show is getting a reboot via CBS Studios, with original star Jessica Biel as a producer. What remains unclear is whether or not this will be a total reboot, or some kind of legacy sequel continuation of the original 7th Heaven series. We're going to lean toward total reboot, as the family patriarch of the show, actor Stephen Collins, admitted to several heinous crimes in recent years. We won't get into the specifics of what they are. But if you're curious, there's a whole episode of Hollywood Demons on HBO Max covering it. So the series lead from the original show almost certainly won't be coming back. But with Jessica Biel involved, maybe she carries on the torch? We don't really know at this point. 7th Heaven became one of the last hits produced by television legend Aaron Spelling. From the '70s through the '90s, Spelling produced a metric ton of hit shows that remain iconic to this day. Among them are Charlie's Angels, The Love Boat, Fantasy Island, Dynasty, Beverly Hills 90210, Melrose Place, and Charmed. Much of the Spelling library is now owned by CBS Studios. They've looked to capitalize on the late Mr. Spelling's iconic brand of shows for the streaming era. We'll soon find out if 7th Heaven can find a new life in a landscape where television is so different.

‘7th Heaven' Reboot From Jessica Biel In Development; Fun Factoids About The Original Series

2/1/99 Los Angeles, CA Jessica Biel and the Cast of "7th Heaven" at the First Annual TV Guide ... More Awards. Another TV series reboot could be on the way. Family drama 7th Heaven, which aired for 11 seasons (10 on The WB and one final season on The CW) and was producer Aaron Spelling's longest-running show, is eyeing a comeback. Focused on the fictional Camden clan, 7th Heaven followed Reverend Eric Camden (Stephen Collins), a Protestant minister living in the fictional town of Glen Oak, California, and his wife Annie (Catherine Hicks) as they dealt with the raising five children at the inception (and seven in later seasons). In the planned revival of 7th Heaven, the expected focus is on a more diverse family with an entirely new cast. Jessica Biel, who played oldest daughter Mary in the original series (and exited as a regular after six seasons), is executive producing under her Iron Ocean banner along with Michelle Purple. DeVon Franklin will executive produce via Franklin Entertainment and his overall deal with CBS Studios. And Anthony Sparks (Queen Sugar, Lincoln Heights) will serve as an executive producer and showrunner. To whet your appetite for this '7th Heaven 2.0,' here are some fun factoids about the original series. 1) 7th Heaven, which ran from 1996 to 2007, was also former network The WB's longest-running series. Then WB dramas like Buffy, the Vampire Slayer, Dawson's Creek and Felicity were more in the media spotlight, but it was 7th Heaven that had the longest shelf life. 7th Heaven Reboot in Development From EP Jessica Biel — Which Cast Members Will Return?

A reboot of the classic family drama 7th Heaven is reportedly in early development from CBS Studios, with one of the show's original stars on board as an executive producer, according to Variety. Through her production company Iron Ocean, Jessica Biel is reportedly developing a new iteration of the show, one that would follow a diverse family. No original cast members are expected to appear at this time. No further information, including a potential network or streaming home for the reboot, is known at this time. 7th Heaven initially ran for 11 seasons (10 on The WB and one last hurrah on The CW) between 1996 and 2007, airing a total of 243 episodes. The story of a minister and his family, 7th Heaven originally starred Stephen Collins as Eric, Catherine Hicks as Annie, Barry Watson as Matt, David Gallagher as Simon, Biel as Mary, Beverly Mitchell as Lucy, Mackenzie Rosman as Ruthie and Happy the Dog as her dang self. Additional notable series regulars throughout the show's storied run included Geoff Stults as Ben Kinkirk, Ashlee Simpson as Cecelia Smith, Rachel Blanchard as Roxanne Richardson, Jeremy London as Chandler Hampton, Tyler Hoechlin as Martin Brewer and Haylie Duff as Sandy Jameson. The show's legacy was tarnished in December 2014 when audio recordings were released of Collins admitting to engaging in sexual misconduct with several underage girls. When TMZ asked Hicks for her thoughts on a potential 7th Heaven revival in 2016, she said, 'I mean, we'd have to open with Stephen's coffin.' Network Scripted TV Scorecard 2025: What's Renewed, Canceled and Still in Limbo

After a rough few years in the broadcast landscape, the 2024-25 season has brought in some rays of hope. To be sure, the long-term structural challenges for network TV remain in a world where streaming is the default platform for the largest share of viewers and ongoing corporate consolidation continues to shrink the number of potential suppliers (and buyers) of shows. But several network shows have achieved breakout status in the past year, and each of the big four broadcasters (ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC) can claim at least one success story among their crop of first-year series. The fact that networks are also the primary suppliers of the long-running, deep-library shows that keep streaming services humming also seems to have sunk in across the industry. More from The Hollywood Reporter 'Law & Order' and 'SVU' Renewed at NBC 'Animal Control' and 'Going Dutch' Comedies Renewed at Fox Sonequa Martin-Green Boards CBS' 'Boston Blue' About that corporate consolidation: The past year has continued the trend of media company reorganization. Both Paramount and Disney closed studios (Paramount TV Studios and ABC Signature), laying off staffers and folding existing work into other studios within their companies (CBS Studios and 20th Television), and NBCUniversal and Warner Bros. Discovery recently restructured their TV leadership groups, effectively placing decision-making power in fewer hands. As has been the case for years now, recognizable IP remains a cheat code for broadcasters — CBS will be chock-full of franchises and spinoffs in 2025-26, and ABC is teeing up a Nashville-set 911 spinoff, with other spinoff projects in development at both networks.
