But he sparked a bit of chaos on his debut - after arriving LATE. Sign up for the Celtic newsletter Sign up 5 Efe Ambrose took on Lionel Messi as a Celtic player Credit: Getty 5 He enjoyed plenty of silverware success at Parkhead Credit: Kenny Ramsay - The Sun Glasgow 5 Ambrose has played for several Scottish clubs including Queen of the South Credit: Kenny Ramsay Ambrose, 36, was with Celtic for five years between 2012 and 2017. He quickly established himself as a regular and won four league titles as a Hoops player, also winning both domestic cups once each. The former Nigeria international, capped 51 times for his country, was also part of the Celtic side that famously beat Barcelona in the Champions League in November 2012. Ambrose was somewhat an enigma during his time at Parkhead. Then Celtic manager Neil Lennon hit out at the defender after he ended up missing the team bus to training before a crunch Champions League clash with Juventus in 2013. Ambrose slept in and ended up having to get a taxi in Turin to make it for the session. While he was capable of a superb performance, Ambrose's showings were at times met with criticism too. He was ultimately frozen out of first team affairs when Brendan Rodgers replaced Ronny Deila as manager in 2016. Moves to Standard Liege and Blackburn fell through before he headed for Hibs on loan in February 2017. He would subsequently join the Easter Road club permanently before exercising an option in his contract to leave in January 2019, joining Derby. Rodgers' message to Celtic board, striker woes & huge Champions League risk After eight months without a club, Ambrose was back in Scotland again in February 2020 with Livingston. Becoming a bit of a journeyman, he then turned out for St Johnstone, Dunfermline, Morton and Queen of the South during a rather busy three-year spell. Ambrose went to England once again with Bury and spent the last year with Workington. But now, he's back in Scottish football again. This time, he's headed for the NINTH tier. Ambrose has joined West of Scotland League Third Division club Glasgow United for the upcoming season. The club have posted a picture of the defender holding his new kit. Ambrose has, in fact, already made his debut for his new team - and it was a bit chaotic. The West of Scotland League kicked-off on Saturday and Glasgow United headed for Ayrshire to take on Ardeer Thistle in their season opener. 5 Glasgow United confirmed Ambrose's arrival Credit: X/@GLASGOWUTDFC 5 Ardeer Thistle revealed the debut didn't quite go to plan! And a post on X from the home team revealed that Glasgow United endured a rather bizarre start to the game. That's because Ambrose showed up LATE - with his team starting with a man less! In the 12th minute of the game, Ardeer posted: "Not much to report other than Glasgow United starting the match with 10 men. "Efe Ambrose has now turned up and takes his place in the back line." Ten minutes later, Glasgow United had a man sent off and were once again back down to ten men. Ardeer won the match 3-0. After Ambrose's shock appearance, the club confirmed after the game that they'd signed the ex-Celtic man. On Facebook, they said: "He is here. Efe Ambrose put the pen to paper and made his debut but there is still more to come." Fans were stunned to see Ambrose back in the Scottish game. One fan said: "Efe Ambrose in Shettleston wasn't on my 2025 Bingo card." While another said: "Efe Ambrose, the gift that keeps on giving." Celtic's '12th Lisbon Lion' John Fallon dies aged 84
FORMER CELTIC GOALKEEPER John Fallon – the 12th Lisbon Lion – has died at the age of 84, the club have announced. Fallon was the only Celtic substitute when Jock Stein's side beat Inter Milan 2-1 in the Portuguese capital to win the European Cup in 1967. The Cambuslang-born goalkeeper joined Celtic in 1958 and made almost 200 appearances over a 14-year period. Advertisement He played in the team that kick-started Celtic's trophy success under Stein with victory over Dunfermline in the 1965 Scottish Cup final and went on to collect 14 winners' medals in total before leaving for Motherwell. He also had a brief spell with Morton before retiring. A statement from the Scottish champions read: 'His love for Celtic, however, was a constant throughout the years, and he followed the club at home and away for the rest of life. 'His passing comes as a great sadness to us all, and the thoughts and prayers of everyone connected with Celtic Football Club are with his family and friends at this sad time.' Fallon was reunited with his European Cup winners' medal in 2019, having lost it in the wake of the final. The memento was donated to Celtic, who returned it to its rightful owner. Speaking at the time, Fallon told the Celtic website: 'We were wading through scores of fans to get off the park and into the dressing room. It's such a great memory. 'We'll never forget it, and it's something everyone should be proud of. For the Celtic supporters, we gave them something to look at that nobody else could.' Fallon attended the funeral of fellow Lisbon Lion John Clark last month.

Celtic 4 Newcastle 0 – Hoops silence 10,000 travelling fans as Callum McGregor lifts another trophy after Parkhead rout
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) CELTIC powered to a comprehensive Adidas Cup victory over their Premier League opponents - with Kieran Tierney grabbing an assist on his return. Second-half sub Tierney's cross was bulleted home by Liam Scales for his side's fourth goal at a sodden Celtic Park. Eddie Howe had picked an experienced Newcastle side with five 30-somethings in their starting line-up and £55m Anthony Elanga on the bench. Joelinton was nowhere to be seen as he recovers from a knee injury while Alexander Isak was also absent as he battles back from a groin issue. Toon boss Howe came close to being named the Celtic manager four years ago but an issue regarding recruiting his backroom team saw the approach crumble. For his Champions League-bound side, their first public outing of the season was a long way from the start Howe had envisioned. Their 10,000-strong travelling support was initially raucous - but they were numerically diminished and very subdued by time-up. They'd beaten Carlisle 4-0 in a training HQ closed-door friendly last week but after a bright start, their defensive rustiness was ruthlessly punished by Celtic. They now head for a Far East tour where they'll face Arsenal, a K League select and Spurs. Celtic started with Kasper Schmeichel in goal, a back four of Tony Ralston, Dane Murray, Auston Trusty and Hayato Inamura. Callum McGregor was joined in midfield by Luke McCowan and Engels, with Yang and Daizen Maeda either side of Kenny up front. Fabian Schar got an early taste of the relentless nature of one Celtic favourite. He seemed to have done the hard work when he turned inside with the ball as Maeda slid past him in an effort to block. Celtic star Daizen Maeda spotted doing press-ups in technical area after being subbed-off against Sporting Lisbon But the Swiss took a fatal touch as he looked forward and found his pass blocked by the Japanese who'd sprung to his feet and raced back into action. The veteran United defender threw up his arms in exasperation. He was in similar bother moments later when he almost gifted Celtic the lead. The alert Maeda robbed skipper Bruno Guimaraes in midfield and from Yang's cross, Schar deflected the ball towards his own goal - and was grateful to Nick Pope who clawed the ball away for a corner. But home keeper Schmeichel was also in action as a bright United side forced the pace, touching William Osula's deflected drive over the top. The Toon Army were creating a terrific atmosphere but they were subdued for practically the first time after 26 minutes when Celtic went in front. Inevitably Maeda was involved, stretching the visiting defence and getting wide of Kieran Trippier. His low cross looked destined for Engels who was tripped going for it by Joe Willock. Nick Walsh pointed to the spot and Engels rattled in the penalty. 6 A limp header by Jacob Murphy into Schmeichel's arms was all United offered by way of immediate response. Celtic should have doubled their lead when Yang cut open the visiting defence and seemed to have left Johnny Kenny with a tap-in - but he made a poor contact with the cross and the opportunity was gone. But the home side sent their fans in at the interval after a catastrophic blunder by Pope presented Kenny with the easiest goal he'll ever score. Schmeichel's kick-out should've been straightforward for the keeper as he came out of his box, but he misjudged the bounce as he attempted to head clear. It sailed over him and Kenny was left to convert the simplest of tap-ins. United made nine changes at the break, with Elanga and Anthony Gordon among the arrivals. One of them, Alex Murphy, immediately powered down the left and his cross was met by Osula - whose effort was brilliantly blocked at point-blank range by Schmeichel. The Toon changes were still taking shape when the visitors fell further behind. 6 Full-back Emil Krafth was left one-on-one with Maeda with the inevitable consequences. He cut inside and rolled the ball across for Yang to finish easily. Kieran Tierney got the expected rousing reception when he made his Celtic Park return as a sub after 55 minutes, replacing Inamura, who had looked composed at left-back. Five minutes later, Rodgers replaced the remaining ten players, with new arrival Benjamin Nygren on as well as youngsters Ben McPherson and Colby Donovan. Nygren was immediately involved, touching the ball on for Adam Idah, who poked his effort narrowly wide of Martin Dubravka's post. Newcastle might have been reduced to ten men when Dan Burn felled Idah in a last-man challenge. Nick Walsh opted for yellow, to the disappointment of the home support. Scotland under-21 defender McPherson's cross set up Idah for a header over the top then Reo Hatate's drive was saved. But Newcastle were looking weary and it was no surprise when Celtic added a fourth after 75 minutes. Tierney's cross was bulleted into the top corner by Scales to round off a highly satisfactory display for Brendan Rodgers.
