Arne Engels penalty and Johnny Kenny's tap-in - after Nick Pope's howler - had Celtic in control at the break, with Hyunjun Yang adding an easy third.
Eddie Howe had picked an experienced Newcastle side with five 30-somethings in their starting line-up and £55m Anthony Elanga on the bench.
Joelinton was nowhere to be seen as he recovers from a knee injury while Alexander Isak was also absent as he battles back from a groin issue.
Toon boss Howe came close to being named the Celtic manager four years ago but an issue regarding recruiting his backroom team saw the approach crumble.
For his Champions League-bound side, their first public outing of the season was a long way from the start Howe had envisioned.
Their 10,000-strong travelling support was initially raucous - but they were numerically diminished and very subdued by time-up.
They'd beaten Carlisle 4-0 in a training HQ closed-door friendly last week but after a bright start, their defensive rustiness was ruthlessly punished by Celtic.
They now head for a Far East tour where they'll face Arsenal, a K League select and Spurs.
Celtic started with Kasper Schmeichel in goal, a back four of Tony Ralston, Dane Murray, Auston Trusty and Hayato Inamura. Callum McGregor was joined in midfield by Luke McCowan and Engels, with Yang and Daizen Maeda either side of Kenny up front.
Fabian Schar got an early taste of the relentless nature of one Celtic favourite. He seemed to have done the hard work when he turned inside with the ball as Maeda slid past him in an effort to block.
Celtic star Daizen Maeda spotted doing press-ups in technical area after being subbed-off against Sporting Lisbon
But the Swiss took a fatal touch as he looked forward and found his pass blocked by the Japanese who'd sprung to his feet and raced back into action. The veteran United defender threw up his arms in exasperation.
He was in similar bother moments later when he almost gifted Celtic the lead.
The alert Maeda robbed skipper Bruno Guimaraes in midfield and from Yang's cross, Schar deflected the ball towards his own goal - and was grateful to Nick Pope who clawed the ball away for a corner.
But home keeper Schmeichel was also in action as a bright United side forced the pace, touching William Osula's deflected drive over the top.
The Toon Army were creating a terrific atmosphere but they were subdued for practically the first time after 26 minutes when Celtic went in front.
Inevitably Maeda was involved, stretching the visiting defence and getting wide of Kieran Trippier. His low cross looked destined for Engels who was tripped going for it by Joe Willock.
Nick Walsh pointed to the spot and Engels rattled in the penalty.

A limp header by Jacob Murphy into Schmeichel's arms was all United offered by way of immediate response.
Celtic should have doubled their lead when Yang cut open the visiting defence and seemed to have left Johnny Kenny with a tap-in - but he made a poor contact with the cross and the opportunity was gone.
But the home side sent their fans in at the interval after a catastrophic blunder by Pope presented Kenny with the easiest goal he'll ever score.
Schmeichel's kick-out should've been straightforward for the keeper as he came out of his box, but he misjudged the bounce as he attempted to head clear. It sailed over him and Kenny was left to convert the simplest of tap-ins.
United made nine changes at the break, with Elanga and Anthony Gordon among the arrivals. One of them, Alex Murphy, immediately powered down the left and his cross was met by Osula - whose effort was brilliantly blocked at point-blank range by Schmeichel.
The Toon changes were still taking shape when the visitors fell further behind.

Full-back Emil Krafth was left one-on-one with Maeda with the inevitable consequences. He cut inside and rolled the ball across for Yang to finish easily.
Kieran Tierney got the expected rousing reception when he made his Celtic Park return as a sub after 55 minutes, replacing Inamura, who had looked composed at left-back.
Five minutes later, Rodgers replaced the remaining ten players, with new arrival Benjamin Nygren on as well as youngsters Ben McPherson and Colby Donovan.
Nygren was immediately involved, touching the ball on for Adam Idah, who poked his effort narrowly wide of Martin Dubravka's post.
Newcastle might have been reduced to ten men when Dan Burn felled Idah in a last-man challenge. Nick Walsh opted for yellow, to the disappointment of the home support.
Scotland under-21 defender McPherson's cross set up Idah for a header over the top then Reo Hatate's drive was saved.
But Newcastle were looking weary and it was no surprise when Celtic added a fourth after 75 minutes.
Tierney's cross was bulleted into the top corner by Scales to round off a highly satisfactory display for Brendan Rodgers.

Liverpool pay tribute to Diogo Jota in first match at Anfield since his death
Liverpool paid tribute to their late forward Diogo Jota on Monday in the club's first home match at Anfield since the footballer's tragic death. Jota, 28, and his brother Andre Silva, 25, were killed in a car crash in the province of Zamora in Spain last month. Liverpool hosted Athletic Bilbao in a pre-season friendly today – with tributes paid to the Portugal international before and during the match. Ahead of kick-off, Liverpool legend Phil Thompson and Athletic Bilbao president Jon Uriarte laid wreaths on the edge of the six-yard box. Players, coaches and supporters from both Liverpool and Athletic Bilbao then applauded as the match was stopped in the 20th minute. Jota wore the No.20 shirt at Liverpool – a number retired by the club in order to remember the forward – who played 182 games for the team. Billboards around the stadium read 'Rest in Peace Diogo Jota and Andre Silva – You'll Never Walk Alone' – while fans sang about the player and held up flags and banners. Jota, who joined Liverpool from Wolves in 2020, helped the club win the Premier League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup before he passed away. 'I know that you will want to pay your tributes before, during and after the games, and I know that we will hear his song ringing out throughout the evening,' Liverpool head coach Arne Slot said in the match programme. 'It has been a tough time for everyone connected with the club, but especially for Diogo's family, his wife, his children and friends. 'We cannot imagine the pain that they have been going through, and the club will continue to give them all the support they can going forward. 'We will always carry him with us in our hearts, in our thoughts, wherever we go. 'Diogo's passing has had a big impact on us all, but what has been so important has been the love and care shown from the football world, and in particular of course the Liverpool FC community.' Liverpool ended up winning the game 4-1 with Rio Ngumoha, Darwin Nunez and Harvey Elliott on the scoresheet, plus an own goal from Athletic Bilbao's Alex Padilla. The Reds are currently gearing up for the new 2025-26 season and face Crystal Palace in the Community Shield at Wembley on Sunday. The Premier League champions then take on AFC Bournemouth in their top-flight opener on August 15. Ben Doak stars for Liverpool in pre-season with youngster earning rave reviews before key Scotland fixtures
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) BEN DOAK burst onto the Scottish national scene last year as Steve Clarke brought the youngster into the fold. But the Liverpool star who was on loan at Middlesbrough last campaign had his season cut short by injury. But Doak has been involved heavily in Arne Slot's pre season even starting Monday night's clash with Athletic Bilbao. The winger impressed in his 56 minute showing against the Reds European opposition. He played a crucial part in helping Liverpool go into a two nil lead early on, putting a key cross in to the box which Darwin Nunez eventually finished off. The young Scotsman also thought he ended up on the score sheet as his strike ended up in the back of the net, but it went down as an own-goal. Despite not officially making it on the score-sheet, Liverpool fans raved about the youngster's performance on social media. Liverpool posted an image of the youngster on X, and fans made their feelings known in the replies. "I have a LOT of faith in Ben Doak" one fan replied. Another added: "Our future's extremely bright." "It was a cross good approach play by him, direct, making things happen," said another. COFFEE CLUB Has Ben Doak been mishandled by Scotland manager Steve Clarke? A fourth supporter called him a "special talent". A Celtic fan also replied, pleading to Doak's former club to snap the youngster up on a loan deal. He featured just twice for the Hoops before his move to Liverpool, one of those appearances coming in an Old Firm. But he has heavily impressed for Scotland, and has picked up six caps for his country. In a squad that lacks wide players, Ben Doak is exactly the type of player that Steve Clarke needs. And the Tartan Army will be relieved to see the electric winger back firing for the Reds. Scotland have key World Cup qualifiers coming up this year, starting with games against Denmark and Belarus in September. With his pre-injury form for Scotland, many fans will be calling for the youngster to be thrown straight back into Steve Clarke's starting 11. Russell Martin's Rangers criticism came from ‘love and care'
The Gers boss hit out following the William Hill Premiership opener at Fir Park, questioning mentality, speaking about 'egos' and accusing some of 'self-preservation'. Martin was speaking again at the club's training ground ahead of the first leg of the Champions League third qualifier against Czech side Viktoria Plzen at Ibrox on Tuesday night, where a play-off tie against Austrian outfit Salzburg or Club Brugge of Belgium awaits the winners. 'I think if they know us by now as a group of coaches that it all comes from a place of love and care for them,' said the Gers boss, who replied 'hopefully he will be in it, we will wait and see', when asked if new signing Oliver Antman, the Finland winger who joined from Go Ahead Eagles on Monday, will be included in the squad. 'We are here, myself, Gilly (Matt Gill, assistant), the coaches, ultimately for the players. 🎙️ Russell Martin spoke to the media ahead of Tuesday's match against Viktoria Plzeň. — Rangers Football Club (@RangersFC) August 4, 2025 'We're here to win football matches, but as coaches day to day, we are here to help the players. 'That's our job, to help them win, to help them develop, to help them improve and understand why, to help them enjoy playing for a club like this, because I don't think too many of them have enjoyed it enough to play for this amazing football club, because it's not always easy. 'I don't come out and say that because I want to be ruthless and all that stuff. 'If they know me as a person, the people who do know me, they know it comes from a place of love and to help them and to want them to be better. 'So I think when it comes from that place, whatever is said and if they understand that, then we'll always have a really honest and good conversation about it. 'I hope they understand who we are by now and what we're here to do, and I really believe they're really trying. 'So they're good people, but the default to try and protect yourself when it gets tough, we need to just shed that a little bit.' ✍️ We are today delighted to announce the signing of Finnish international Oliver Antman on a four-year-deal. — Rangers Football Club (@RangersFC) August 4, 2025 Martin confirmed that Thelo Aasgaard and Hamza Igamane will again miss out through fitness issues while it is not clear if Mikey Moore, the 17-year-old attacker who has signed on loan from Tottenham, will receive international clearance in time to be part of the squad. On the task facing his side, Martin said: 'The game is going to be tough. 'They are really powerful, really strong, play forward quickly, run forward quickly. 'It's a really different test to the Panathinaikos one and it is a really interesting and exciting one for us. 'They have strength in certain areas, but we have to try and turn the game, especially at Ibrox, into the game that we want, move the ball quickly, better than we did the other day. 'We have to really be up for the fight against these guys but I am looking forward to it.'
