Cinemark is opening 6 new panoramic, 270-degree movie theaters in 2025, and 14 more next year. Is one coming near you?
Some good news for moviegoers: Cinemark announced on Wednesday it plans to add 18 new panoramic, 270-degree ScreenX movie theaters in the U.S., with six slated to open in 2025, and the remaining next year. Exclusive: Google is indexing ChatGPT conversations, potentially exposing sensitive user data Emotionally intelligent people use the 2-week rule to motivate themselves and reach their biggest goals Middle management is dead The deal expands Cinemark's existing partnership with South Korea-based CJ 4DPlex to a total number of 26 Cinemark theaters. It will also add two more theaters in Latin America in 2026, introducing ScreenX to that region's audiences for the first time. The two companies first partnered in 2022, with the launch of their initial ScreenX locations in California and Texas. 'That's been a big goal for us, to get as many theaters open for the last part of the year for 'Wicked: For Good' and, of course, 'Avatar: Fire and Ash,' which is such a seminal movie for all of the industry,' Don Savant, CEO of CJ 4DPlex Americas, told CNBC. ScreenX creates a dynamic, 270-degree panoramic field of view by extending movie screens onto the left and right walls of the auditorium, filling the audience's peripheral vision. Fast Company reached out to Cinemark for a list of new locations, but it said it is unable to share further information at this time, as it is 'currently in a quiet period before reporting company earnings.' Movie theater attendance has fallen since the pandemic, with audience habits shifting to streaming home entertainment. According to Octane Seating, 63% of Americans now watch movies at home, as more people turn to their smartphones and other digital devices to consume movies and video instead of a trip to the multiplex. In May, Cinemark reported financial results for the first quarter of 2025 ended March 31, including a total revenue of $541 million, which was a decrease of 6.6% from $579 million for the same quarter of the previous year. It also reported a net loss of $39 million, or 32 cents per share, compared to a net income of $25 million and earnings per share of 19 cents in the same quarter of 2024. Cinemark will report second-quarter earnings results on August 1. The company has a current market capitalization of $3.1 billion. Cinemark to add 20 ScreenX locations in push for premium moviegoing
Singing witches and blue aliens are set to hit the big screen before the end of the year and bring in droves of moviegoers. Cinemark is preparing for the high demand by adding more unique premium screens to its U.S.- and Latin America-based locations. On Wednesday, the third-largest U.S. cinema chain announced it's adding 20 new ScreenX theaters to its portfolio, expanding its partnership with the South Korea-based CJ 4DPlex. Eighteen of those screens will be built in the U.S. The expansion marks ScreenX's first foray into Latin America. ScreenX is a premium film format that utilizes additional displays on the right and left walls of the auditorium, called wings, to create a 270-degree panoramic field of view. Cinemark already has six ScreenX locations and expects to open six more before the end of the year. "That's been a big goal for us, to get as many theaters open for the last part of the year for 'Wicked: For Good' and, of course, 'Avatar: Fire and Ash,' which is such a seminal movie for all of the industry," Don Savant, CEO of CJ 4DPlex Americas, told CNBC. CJ 4DPlex and Cinemark entered into a six-theater beta test together in 2022, but with the dual writers and actors strikes delaying production and theatrical releases, it took longer to expand the number of locations domestically, Savant said. "They just needed to see a consistent flow of content," he said. The investment from Cinemark in adding more ScreenX theaters is part of a wider trend in the theatrical industry. In the wake of the pandemic, moviegoers have gravitated more and more toward seeing films on premium large format screens. These locations, often referred to as PLFs, offer an elevated viewing experience and charge higher ticket prices. The physical screens are often bigger than traditional movie screens or have auditoriums that feature higher-quality sound systems or seating options. CJ 4DPlex is also the company behind 4DX movie theaters, auditoriums with motion seats, practical effects and sensory elements to immerse viewers in a movie. Savant said the company is focused on "differentiating cinema" and providing audiences with experiences they can't get from streaming offerings or in-home entertainment systems. While PLF receipts still represent a small portion of the overall box office, it's a growing segment of the business. And moviegoers have demonstrated they're willing to pay more for these experiences. So far this year, premium tickets have represented 22% of domestic sales, according to movie data firm EntTelligence. The average cost of an adult ticket year to date for a PLF is $17.61, nearly a dollar higher than the same ticket during the end of 2024.

ScreenX and 4DX theaters to expand across US, Europe
Multiple panoramic screens, as well as motion chair-equipped cinematic experience to be available at more locations More ScreenX and 4DX theaters, which offer enhanced viewing experiences through changes in film projection formats and motion effects, will be coming to the US and Europe starting this summer. According to CJ 4D Plex, a subsidiary of CJ CGV, 25 ScreenX theaters and 40 4DX theaters will open across the US and Europe. CJ 4D Plex currently operates 1,211 special screening theaters, including 4DX and ScreenX, in 74 countries. The expansion is the result of a business partnership between CJ 4D Plex and AMC Entertainment, a US movie theater chain considered to be the world's largest. AMC Entertainment currently operates approximately 10,000 screens across 900 theaters worldwide. ScreenX theaters allow viewers to experience films on three sides of the theater — the front, left, and right walls — or even four sides, including the ceiling. Meanwhile, 4DX theaters integrate motion chairs and environmental effects, enabling seats to move, wind to blow, and scents to be released in sync with movie scenes. Bang Jun-sik, CEO of CJ 4D Plex, stated, "This agreement demonstrates the rapidly growing global popularity of ScreenX and 4DX." He added, "It is a confirmation that the film industry continues to innovate and provide audiences with differentiated entertainment experiences."
