More ScreenX and 4DX theaters, which offer enhanced viewing experiences through changes in film projection formats and motion effects, will be coming to the US and Europe starting this summer.
According to CJ 4D Plex, a subsidiary of CJ CGV, 25 ScreenX theaters and 40 4DX theaters will open across the US and Europe. CJ 4D Plex currently operates 1,211 special screening theaters, including 4DX and ScreenX, in 74 countries.
The expansion is the result of a business partnership between CJ 4D Plex and AMC Entertainment, a US movie theater chain considered to be the world's largest. AMC Entertainment currently operates approximately 10,000 screens across 900 theaters worldwide.
ScreenX theaters allow viewers to experience films on three sides of the theater — the front, left, and right walls — or even four sides, including the ceiling. Meanwhile, 4DX theaters integrate motion chairs and environmental effects, enabling seats to move, wind to blow, and scents to be released in sync with movie scenes.
Bang Jun-sik, CEO of CJ 4D Plex, stated, "This agreement demonstrates the rapidly growing global popularity of ScreenX and 4DX." He added, "It is a confirmation that the film industry continues to innovate and provide audiences with differentiated entertainment experiences."

Google bows to antitrust pressure with YouTube Lite in Korea

Google will launch a new standalone YouTube subscription in Korea without YouTube Music — a move aimed at addressing antitrust concerns over alleged unfair bundling practices, according to the country's competition regulator on Tuesday. The new product, dubbed YouTube Premium Lite, will provide ad-free video streaming without the music streaming service at nearly half the price of the current YouTube Premium plan. Monthly fees are set at 8,500 won ($6.15) for Android users and 10,900 won for Apple customers. The pricing disparity reflects fees imposed by Apple's in-app payment system, the Fair Trade Commission said. On Tuesday, the antitrust watchdog unveiled a provisional consent decree outlining these changes as part of its investigation into Google's potential violation of Korea's Monopoly Regulation and Fair Trade Act. The regulator will collect feedback from interested parties for 30 days until Aug. 14 before making a final decision. If approved, Google will be required to launch YouTube Premium Lite in Korea within 90 days. The corrective measure stems from the FTC's view that Google's current bundling of YouTube Premium with YouTube Music ― priced at 14,900 won ― unfairly limits consumer choice. In response, Google agreed to create the new Premium Lite offering, which includes only ad-free video viewing. Compared to the full Premium service, the new plan costs about 57.1 percent less on Android and 55.9 percent less on iOS. 'Even after the launch of YouTube Premium Lite, the existing subscription products ― YouTube Premium and YouTube Music Premium ― will remain unchanged,' said Kim Moon-sik, director general of the FTC's anti-monopoly investigation bureau. 'Consumers who prefer the current packages can continue their subscriptions as before.' Google has also committed to freezing the prices of both YouTube Premium Lite and YouTube Premium for at least one year after launch, a move aimed at alleviating concerns about rising subscription fees across digital platforms, a trend now dubbed as 'streamflation.' To further incentivize users, Google plans to offer a two-month free trial to both new subscribers and existing Premium users who switch to the Premium Lite plan. This promotional offer will be implemented exclusively in Korea, making it the first such initiative globally. Additionally, Google will introduce discount plans in partnership with local telecom providers and retailers. These initiatives are expected to benefit up to 2.1 million Korean consumers, the antitrust regulator estimated. The consent decree includes provisions for fostering the domestic content ecosystem. Google pledged to invest 15 billion won over four years to support emerging Korean artists, selecting up to 48 teams, with at least eight to receive support for global expansion. Chosen artists will benefit from training in composition and vocals, promotional support and overseas performance opportunities. This case marks one of the first applications of the consent decree process to a global tech platform in Korea. Addressing criticism that the measure may serve as a 'free pass' for Google, Kim emphasized that the consent decree allows for faster and more effective enforcement than traditional legal proceedings, which can take four to five years. 'Especially in tying cases, it allows for concrete negotiations on the design and conditions of new product offerings, ultimately enhancing consumer protection,' he said.

LG enters global AI race with hybrid Exaone 4.0 model

Combining large language understanding with advanced reasoning, Korea's first hybrid AI excels in coding, math, science, professional domains LG AI Research, the artificial intelligence arm of LG Group, on Tuesday unveiled Exaone 4.0, Korea's first "hybrid" AI model that combines the language fluency of large language models with the advanced problem-solving abilities of reasoning AI. This breakthrough represents a major leap in Korea's ambition to lead in next-generation AI, as the model can both understand human language and logically reason through complex tasks. 'We will continue to advance research and development so that Exaone can become Korea's leading frontier AI model and prove its competitiveness in the global market,' said LG AI Research's Exaone lab leader Lee Jin-sik. Globally, only a few companies have announced similar hybrid AI architectures, including US-based Anthropic with its Claude model and China's Alibaba with Qwen. OpenAI is reportedly working on GPT-5, which is expected to adopt a hybrid structure as well. In benchmark evaluations across a variety of domains — including knowledge comprehension, problem-solving, coding, scientific reasoning and mathematics — Exaone 4.0 outperformed leading open-weight models from the US, China and France, establishing itself as one of the world's most capable AI models. LG introduced two versions of the model: a 32B expert model with 32 billion parameters and a lighter 1.2B on-device model with 1.2 billion parameters. The expert model successfully passed written exams for six national professional licenses, including those for physicians, dentists, Korean medicine doctors, customs brokers, appraisers and insurance adjusters — underscoring its domain-level expertise. The on-device model, designed for practical use in consumer electronics such as home appliances, smartphones, automotive infotainment systems and robots, runs independently on devices without connecting to external servers. It ensures faster processing, enhanced privacy, and robust security, which are key advantages in an increasingly AI-integrated world. Despite being half the size of its predecessor, the Exaone 3.5 2.4B model released in December, the new on-device model surpasses GPT-4o mini from OpenAI in specialized evaluations across mathematics, coding, and science, making it the most powerful in its weight class globally. To accelerate open research and innovation, LG has released Exaone 4.0 as an open-weight model on Hugging Face, the leading global platform for open-source AI. While open-weight models do not disclose architectural blueprints or training data, they make the trained weights publicly accessible, allowing developers to fine-tune and redistribute the models. Notable peers in the open-weight category include Google's Gemma, Meta's LLaMA, Microsoft's Phi, Alibaba's Qwen and Mistral AI's Mistral. Additionally, LG has partnered with Friendly AI, an official Hugging Face distribution partner, to launch a commercial API service for Exaone 4.0. It allows developers and enterprises to easily deploy the model without requiring high-end GPUs, thereby broadening accessibility across industries. In his New Year's address, LG Group Chairman Koo Kwang-mo underscored the group's long-term vision for artificial intelligence, calling it a core driver of future innovation. 'LG has grown by constantly pioneering uncharted territory and creating new value,' he said. 'Now, with AI, we aim to reshape everyday life by making advanced technologies more accessible and meaningful, helping people reclaim their time for what truly matters.' He emphasized that LG's AI efforts are not just about technological leadership, but about enabling a smarter, more human-centered lifestyle through seamless AI integration across products and services. Meanwhile, LG hosted 'Exaone Partners Day' on Tuesday, bringing together 22 domestic partner companies to discuss strategies for expanding the Exaone ecosystem. The group will further highlight its AI ambitions at the 'LG AI Talk Concert 2025' in Seoul on July 22, where it plans to unveil its latest research breakthroughs and present a roadmap for future AI innovation.

KT partners with Nokia Bell Labs on semantic communication tech for 6G

South Korean telecommunications giant KT said Monday it is joining hands with Nokia Bell Labs Core Research to advance research and commercialization of semantic communication technology for the 6G era. Semantic communication is a next-generation technology that uses artificial intelligence to interpret the meaning and context of data, transmitting only essential information rather than every raw data element. This approach is expected to improve network efficiency dramatically and enable services such as fully autonomous driving, remote robotics and immersive holographic communications, KT said. 'Semantic communication is an innovative technology that will redefine the very role of networks by fusing AI and communications,' said Lee Jong-sik, executive vice president and head of KT's Future Network Research Institute. Since October last year, KT said it has been conducting internal demonstrations of semantic communication in the high-data-consumption areas of video and voice communications, which are the most noticeable to customers. The tests confirmed that semantic communication can deliver the intended meaning of the original data while significantly reducing transmission volume, without degrading the quality perceived by the user. To accelerate the technology's development and commercialization, KT has partnered with Nokia Bell Labs, a world-renowned communications technology research institute. The two firms signed a strategic partnership to collaborate on 6G semantic communication earlier this year. In May, they hosted a workshop at Nokia Bell Labs' US headquarters, sharing their roadmaps and plans for joint research, KT explained. "Bell Labs is at the forefront of semantic communication research, and through cooperation with KT, we can validate use cases and move closer to commercialization," said Peter Vetter, president of Bell Labs Core Research. KT's push aligns with a global trend in which telecom giants, including NTT Docomo in Japan and Ericsson in Europe, are exploring AI-powered network architecture for 6G.
