Bengaluru's civic body launches clean-up plan to reclaim footpaths, improve hygiene: Report
In a renewed push to boost urban cleanliness and reclaim public spaces, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), which is Bengaluru's civic and administrative body, on Friday rolled out an extensive city-wide clean-up and anti-encroachment campaign spanning six key zones of the city. Damaged footpath slabs were replaced, garbage was removed and overgrown tree branches obstructing movement were trimmed. Encroachments, particularly on Kammanahalli Main Road and Subbaiyanapalya, were also cleared to restore pedestrian pathways. In the West Zone, BBMP teams focused on areas like Industrial Estate, Nandini Layout and Jagajeevanram Nagar under the Rajajinagar and Malleswaram limits. Obstructions along roads were removed, and waste cleared to restore order in these bustling areas, the report stated. In the northern Yelahanka Zone, Thanisandra Main Road, Ananthapura Main Road, and Jakkur Layout were the focus of extensive clean-up work, which also involved checks for single-use plastic and violations under tobacco control regulations, COPTA. Meanwhile, in Rajarajeshwari Nagar, a thorough cleaning was conducted at Kengeri Bus Stand, coupled with the planting of saplings along Kengeri Lake to enhance green cover. Further south in Bommanahalli, BBMP teams cleared roadside waste from areas like Mico Layout and Begur, the report added.

BBMP launches massive cleanliness drive across six zones in Bengaluru
The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) on Friday launched a large-scale cleanliness and encroachment clearance drive across six zones of the city. Under the directions of BBMP Chief Commissioner M. Maheshwar Rao, the campaign, carried out in coordination with the Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited (BSWML), aims to improve hygiene and restore pedestrian space across major stretches. Zonal and Joint Commissioners, along with Chief Engineers, supervised the operations that deployed heavy vehicles, tractors, and cleaning personnel. In the East Zone, damaged slabs were replaced, garbage cleared, and obstructing tree branches removed along a 4.4 km stretch from Anepalya Junction to Residency Road. Footpath encroachments were also cleared in Kammanahalli Main Road and Subbaiyanapalya. In the West Zone, the BBMP undertook cleaning operations in Industrial Estate, Nandini Layout, and Jagajeevanram Nagar of Rajajinagar and Malleswaram divisions and removed obstructions on several roads. The South Zone saw pushcarts and name boards removed from footpaths in Deepanjali Nagar and near Kempambudhi Lake, while in the Yelahanka Zone, cleanup drives were carried out along Thanisandra Main Road, Ananthapura Main Road, and Jakkur Layout, alongside checks on plastic use and COPTA violations. At Kengeri Bus Stand in Rajarajeshwari Nagar, mass cleaning was carried out, and saplings were planted near Kengeri Lake. In Bommanahalli, roadside waste was cleared in Mico Layout, Begur.

Anti-narcotics EAGLE teams raid paan, kirana shops near colleges, seize tobacco, gutkha products
In a joint operation, officers of the Elite Anti-Narcotics Group for Law Enforcement (EAGLE) and the NTR Commissionerate Police raided paan, kirana and cool drink shops located near schools and colleges on Saturday, and seized cigarettes and tobacco products. The teams headed by EAGLE chief and Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ake Ravi Krishna and NTR Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) K.G.V. Saritha, K.V.S.R. Siddhartha College of Pharmaceutical Sciences Principal A. Suneetha and College Anti-Ragging Committee coordinator G. Ramana Reddy checked the shops and confiscated the cigarette, gutkha and tobacco products of various brands. 'Under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COPTA) 2003, gutkha or any other tobacco products and cigarettes should not be sold within 100 metres from educational institutions,' Mr. Ravi Krishna said. The DCP expressed ire on the police for not implementing COPTA, as many cigarettes and gutkha packets were seen in the pan shops near Siddhartha Pharmacy College, Siddhartha Institute of Hotel Management and Sri Chaitanya School on Pinnamaneni Polyclinic Road. 'Some paan shop owners were maintaining secret rooms behind the shops and were providing shelter for students for smoking and other illegal activities. Though tobacco, gutkha and other banned products were being sold openly at many places and are spoiling students, there was no action,' said a local person Naveen. 'Police, Excise and EAGLE officers should conduct surprise raids to check sale of cigarettes, ganja, narcotics and tobacco products at schools and colleges and save the lives of children,' said 60-year-old Narayana Swamy, who came to a shop during the raids. 'More than 6,000 shops have been raided under 'Operation Safe Campus Zone', and tobacco products and cigarettes, worth lakhs of rupees were seized,' the EAGLE chief said. Mr. Ravi Krishna said that cases have been registered against the shop owners. Teachers should know about COPTA and assume responsibility for implementation of Act to check anti-social activities near schools and colleges, he said. Cops warn Bengaluru restopubs to control music volume level after 10pm
Bengaluru: The police issued warnings to pubs, bars, and restaurants regarding adherence to permissible decibel (dB) levels for music after 10pm. During recent inspections, they registered 19 cases against establishments for various infractions, including absence of designated smoking areas and poor hygiene standards. During the special drive conducted between June 19 and June 23, the police found following violations: failure to maintain designated smoking zones, violation of the Excise Act, operating beyond the deadline, not maintaining food safety standards, and other illegal activities, including playing loud music. The police registered around 19 cases under COPTA (Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution) Act, 2003, Karnataka Police Act, and Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). A few establishments, including Pegs N Bottles Bar and Social on Church Street, Lupa on MG Road, Brigade Dream Bar and Restaurant on Brigade Road, and Times Bar and Restaurant on Residency Road, were among the 19 establishments booked. The police issued strict warning to the owners and management of the establishments on June 23 evening and demanded mandatory compliance of rules and regulations.

19 bars, restaurants found engaging in ‘unlawful' activities: Police
Bengaluru: In a late-night special operation conducted by the Bengaluru Police, 19 bars and restuarants were found violating COPTA regulations and illegally employing female servers and engaging in 'unlawful' activities, officials said on Friday. The raids were carried out on Thursday night after Bengaluru Police Commissioner, Seemanth Kumar Singh, received credible information that several bars and restaurants in the West zone of the city were illegally employing female servers and engaging in unlawful activities, they said. Based on the information, 11 special police teams were formed in the West zone. A special raid was conducted on bars and restaurants falling under the jurisdictions of Upparpet, Cottonpet, Kalasipalya, Cubbon Park and Ashoknagar Police Stations, police said.
