CPI(ML) flags anomalies in voter list, seeks rectification
Patna: The CPI(ML) on Sunday submitted a complaint to the Election Commission in Delhi, highlighting several anomalies it has initially identified in the draft electoral rolls under the special intensive revision (SIR) exercise. These discrepancies relate to electors in six assembly constituencies – Bhore, Barachatti, Tarari, Aurangabad, Digha and Jehanabad. The party alleged irregularities such as the non-inclusion of eligible voters, duplicate entries under the same EPIC number, names listed at multiple locations with minor variations, removal of valid voters and inclusion of deceased people. In Jehanabad town's Jafarganj locality alone, the names of over 200 Muslim electors were deleted, it alleged. In Digha, CPI(ML) listed 10 deceased people allegedly still present on the draft roll with names and serial numbers provided. In Bhore, the names of two living persons — Kudrat Khan and Shailesh Prasad — were said to be missing, though officials claimed their names were included under different EPIC numbers. The party questioned, "We want to know as to how could the EPIC number change? Are they the same electors, or different ones?" In Barachatti's booth 305, the same EPIC number was reportedly assigned to two different women, prompting the party to ask, "How can it be possible?" In Tarari, multiple entries under altered names for the same individuals were flagged, such as Vinay Kumar Tiwari being listed thrice using variations of his name. In Aurangabad, several voters were found to have been removed from their original serial numbers and re-entered elsewhere, the party said. The CPI-ML has sought rectification of the alleged discrepancies. Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Friendship Day wishes , messages and quotes !

Roundtable demands cancellation of land allotted to LuLu Group in Vizag
The speakers at a roundtable organised by the CPI on Friday (August 1, 2025) demanded that the Andhra Pradesh government cancel the prime land allotted to the LuLu Group at a nominal price, near RK Beach in the city. CPI district secretary Sheik Rahaman and CPI(M) district committee secretary M. Jaggunaidu demanded a probe by a sitting Judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court into the whole issue. They alleged that the land was allotted in violation of the guidelines. They found fault with the State government for issuing a G.O. regarding the land allotment. The speakers at the roundtable opined that the NDA government was taking decisions to favour the corporate groups. There was a suspicion among the people that the decision was the result of a secret deal between the powers that be in the government. They recalled that several traders had lost their livelihood due to the proliferation of malls in the city. The LuLu Mall would pose a serious threat to the livelihood of small traders on the Beach Road. They reiterated the demand for cancellation of the allotment failing which widespread protests would be organised against the 'lopsided policies' of the government. CPI(M) leader B. Ganga Rao, CPI (ML) New Democracy leader M. Kondayya, CPI (ML) Praja Poru leader K. Deva and CPI district leaders M. Pydiraju, K. Satyanarayana, M. Manmadha Rao, CN Kshetrapal, R. Srinivas and M.A. Begum were among those who participated in the roundtable.

Micro-finance firms pushing people into debt trap: Economist
Patna: Economist Jean Dreze on Thursday alleged that there is no transparency in micro-finance companies, which have become very active in Bihar and Jharkhand of late. "People have been taking loans on high interest rates from the micro-finance companies to fulfil even their basic needs. Unable to repay the interest on the principal amount, the companies are charging interest even on the interest that gets accumulated, which, in turn, has been pushing them into debt traps," Dreze said, while addressing Karj Mukti Mahila Sammelan, organised by the CPI(ML) at Indian Medical Association hall here, on the birth anniversary of Hindi writer Premchand. Dipankar Bhattacharya, CPI(ML) general secretary, said they would make the debt trap an election issue, as reports have been coming about the debtors committing suicides. "The people of the country are getting increasingly caught in economic crisis due to lack of employment, but they are being subjected to communal disputes. Now, the people of Bihar have become victim of the special intensive revision of the electoral roll," he said. All India progressive women's association national general secretary Meena Tiwari said that the micro-finance companies operating in Bihar had disbursed loans worth Rs 49,500 crore in 2023, a huge jump from Rs 6,000 crore in 2020. A large number of women, who had taken loans from the micro-finance companies, narrated the tales of their woes.

Danger of ‘mass disenfranchisement': In meet with EC, CPI(ML) demands halt to Bihar SIR
Highlighting what it described as the danger of 'mass disenfranchisement', the Communist Party of India (Marxist Leninist) Liberation Tuesday demanded that the Election Commission stop its ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in Bihar. A delegation of CPI (ML) leaders met the three-member commission on Tuesday, as a part of the EC's ongoing initiative to interact with national and state parties on the issue. The SIR was started in Bihar with the EC's order on June 24. As per the order, all 7.8 crore electors of Bihar have to fill enumeration forms by July 25 in order to be included in the draft roll to be published on August 1. In addition, for all those added to the rolls after January 1, 2003, the EC has asked for documents to establish eligibility, including citizenship. 'On the basis of our experience of the first four weeks of the SIR drive in Bihar, we are afraid that mass disenfranchisement remains a very real danger for Bihar's poor, women, migrant workers and young electors, with all its alarming consequences,' the CPI (ML) said in a memorandum submitted to the EC. The party said that a large number of electors do not have the 11 documents listed by the EC, which do not include Aadhaar and voter ID. 'Even applying for possible documents like domicile certificate or caste certificate has now become inordinately difficult and in all likelihood, millions will not be able to submit any documents unless the EC accepts the Supreme Court suggestion of including Aadhaar cards, ration cards or voter cards. Leaving it to the EROs to decide about all such cases on the basis of local investigations would leave the electoral roll susceptible to all kinds of bias and arbitrary administrative errors and possible manipulations and thus render the integrity of the electoral roll highly suspect,' the party said. Meanwhile, the EC issued a statement Tuesday saying that 90.67% forms had been received so far and 52.30 lakh electors were not found at their addresses.

CPI(ML) urges EC to stop SIR, cites ‘danger of mass disenfranchisement'
The delegation, comprising Rajaram Singh (MP, Karakat and CPI(ML) floor leader in the Lok Sabha), Sudama Prasad (MP, Ara), Shyam Chandra Chaudhary (secretary, Bihar State Committee) and Sanjay Sharma (central headquarters, CPI(ML), raised concerns about alleged procedural violations, exclusionary practices, and the danger of 'mass disenfranchisement of the poor, migrant, and young voters,' the party said. This was communicated to the EC by a delegation of the CPI(Marxist-Leninist) Liberation, who met Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the election commissioners and submitted a detailed memorandum expressing strong objections to the ongoing SIR exercise. New Delhi, Jul 22 (PTI) Mass disenfranchisement remains a 'very real danger' for the poor in Bihar in the ongoing SIR exercise, CPI(ML) Liberation told the Election Commission on Tuesday, urging it to withdraw the circular and conduct the forthcoming polls in the state on the basis of updated version of the electoral rolls used for the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. In its memorandum, the CPI(ML) questioned the claims of BLOs coming across large numbers of foreign nationals from Bangladesh, Nepal and Myanmar in their house-to-house visits. They also questioned the figures of likely deletion from the rolls. 'Did the summary revision fail to note this and revise the rolls accordingly?' they asked. The party pointed out that though there is a provision for migrants to fill the form online, which was 'belatedly' pulicised in newspapers, many may not have access to information and internet facilities. They also said it is 'well known' that large numbers of electors do not have the documents mentioned in the EC's indicative list of eleven documents. 'On the basis of our experience of the first four weeks of the SIR drive in Bihar, we are afraid that mass disenfranchisement remains a very real danger for Bihar's poor, women, migrant workers and young electors, with all its alarming consequences,' the CPI(ML) said. 'We therefore once again urge the EC to withdraw the SIR circular and conduct the forthcoming Assembly elections of Bihar on the basis of a duly updated version of the electoral rolls used for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections,' they said. The EC, in its statement, said the meeting is in continuation of the interactions being held by ECI with the presidents of various national and state political parties. 'These interactions provide for a long-felt need of constructive discussions which enable national and state party presidents to share their suggestions and concerns directly with the commission,' it said. 'This initiative aligns with the commission's broader vision of further strengthening the electoral process in accordance with the existing legal framework with all stakeholders,' it said. The EC added that in March, a total of 4,719 all-party meetings were conducted, including 40 meetings by CEOs, 800 by DEOs, and 3879 by EROs, engaging over 28,000 representatives of various political parties.
