Roundtable demands cancellation of land allotted to LuLu Group in Vizag

The Hindu02-08-2025
The speakers at a roundtable organised by the CPI on Friday (August 1, 2025) demanded that the Andhra Pradesh government cancel the prime land allotted to the LuLu Group at a nominal price, near RK Beach in the city.
CPI district secretary Sheik Rahaman and CPI(M) district committee secretary M. Jaggunaidu demanded a probe by a sitting Judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court into the whole issue.
They alleged that the land was allotted in violation of the guidelines. They found fault with the State government for issuing a G.O. regarding the land allotment.
The speakers at the roundtable opined that the NDA government was taking decisions to favour the corporate groups.
There was a suspicion among the people that the decision was the result of a secret deal between the powers that be in the government. They recalled that several traders had lost their livelihood due to the proliferation of malls in the city.
The LuLu Mall would pose a serious threat to the livelihood of small traders on the Beach Road. They reiterated the demand for cancellation of the allotment failing which widespread protests would be organised against the 'lopsided policies' of the government.
CPI(M) leader B. Ganga Rao, CPI (ML) New Democracy leader M. Kondayya, CPI (ML) Praja Poru leader K. Deva and CPI district leaders M. Pydiraju, K. Satyanarayana, M. Manmadha Rao, CN Kshetrapal, R. Srinivas and M.A. Begum were among those who participated in the roundtable.

HC allows CPI(M) to hold ‘peaceful assembly' to ‘express thoughts' on Gaza

Mumbai: Weeks after the CPI(M)'s criticism of its observations while rejecting a plea to hold a rally in support of Palestinians, the Bombay high court has permitted the party to hold a "peaceful assembly" at Azad Maidan on August 20 between 3 pm and 6 pm to "express thoughts on genocide, purportedly occurring at Gaza. " The State govt through additional public prosecutor Shreekant Gavand informed a bench headed by Justice R V Ghuge that it would permit the assembly at Azad Maidan which has a designated spot for public meetings, agitations and processions under draft rules of the Maharashtra Police Act. Senior counsel Mihir Desai argued that the Communist Party of India (Marxist) only wanted to meet at the designated protest spot and were not seeking permission to march. He said the draft rules provide for space at Azad Maidan to assemble peacefully. The court was shown an affidavit filed by deputy police commissioner (Zone 1) in March 2025 indicating the draft rules. The rules stipulate that a protest meeting or assembly can be held between 11 am and 6 pm. At the hearing, the bench remarked that "peaceful assembly sounds good". "Demonstration sounds more intense," said Justice Ghuge. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Investire per il futuro? The bench had asked Desai how his clients were affected by what was happening "thousands of miles" away. "Be patriots…speak up for causes in our own country," the high court remarked orally. Desai said democracies worldwide were holding peaceful protests on the issue. "Our country has enough issues. We don't want anything like this. I am sorry to say, you are all short-sighted… You are looking at issues in Gaza and Palestine. Look at your own country," the court said. The prosecutor had then opposed the CPI(M) plea on the grounds that permitting the protest may create a law and order situation and a conflict with reference to India's stand on the issue. After the police rejected the CPI(M) application, the party filed a fresh request before the high court challenging the refusal. It had also issued a statement criticising the court's observations. However, the court had refused to initiate suo motu contempt proceedings. A bench of Bombay HC Chief Justice Alok Aradhe in March this year had directed the state govt to frame rules to regulate public meetings, agitations, and processions in Mumbai, and implement them in "letter and spirit." Protests and counter-protests over voter List fraud row in Thrissur

Thrissur Communist Party of India (Marxist) workers on Tuesday staged a protest march to the office of Union Minister Suresh Gopi in Thrissur, amid the escalating controversy over alleged voter list fraud. Demonstrators poured black oil on the office signboard, while one protester attempted to garland it with chappals. The police took the protester into custody, but CPI(M) workers allegedly intervened and freed him. In a counter-move, Bharatiya Janata Party workers held a rally in the city condemning the attack on Mr. Gopi's office, marking a day of tense political face-offs in Thrissur.

Will allow CPI(M) to hold 'peaceful assembly': Mumbai police to HC

Agency: Last Updated: August 12, 2025, 19:30 IST Representational image (Image: News18) Mumbai, Aug 12 (PTI) The police on Tuesday informed the Bombay High Court that permission will be granted to the Communist Party of India (Marxist) to hold a 'peaceful assembly" regarding the situation in Gaza on August 20 at Azad Maidan in south Mumbai. The assembly has been planned to express concerns over the alleged 'genocide" in Gaza. A bench headed by Justice Ravindra Ghuge was hearing a plea filed by the CPI(M), challenging the denial of permission to hold a demonstration, citing law and order issues. The CPI(M) had argued that citizens have the constitutional right to protest at designated spots, even on issues that may not align with government policies. Additional public prosecutor S V Gavand informed the court that permission would be granted. Following this, the petitioner's counsel, Mihir Desai, said that the peaceful assembly would take place between 3 pm to 6 pm. The court had earlier raised concerns over inflammatory speeches and potential disruptions during the assembly, and on Tuesday, it asked the petitioner to give an assurance. Desai assured the court that the meeting would be peaceful and the organisers would adhere to draft regulations for public meetings, agitations and processions proposed under the Maharashtra Police Act. The petition was filed after the police had initially refused permission for the protest, citing concerns that the demonstration could spark a law and order issue, as it was perceived to challenge India's foreign policy.
