DR Congo bans reporting on ex-President Kabila

The Congolese government has banned the media from reporting on the activities of former President Joseph Kabila and interviewing members of his party. This comes after Kabila returned to the Democratic Republic of Congo last month amid heightened tensions between himself and the government, led by his successor, President Félix Tshisekedi. The authorities are pushing to prosecute Mr Kabila amid accusations of treason and alleged links to the M23 rebels which have been fighting the army - something he has previously denied. Breaches of the ban could result in suspension, said the head of DR Congo's media regulator, Christian Bosembe. Responding to the announcement by the regulator, known as the the Supreme Council of Audiovisual and Communication (CSAC), an M23 spokesperson said the media outlets in parts of the country under its control would not abide by the ban. There has been no immediate response from Kabila, however, the secretary of his party, Ferdinand Kambere, rejected the ban, describing it as "arbitrary" on X. Kabila was last week seen in the eastern DR Congo city of Goma, which is under M23 control. He has been highly critical of the government after the senate voted to lift his immunity over his alleged support of the M23 group. DR Congo's neighbour, Rwanda has been accused of backing the rebel group, but Kigali denies this. Kabila, who has not yet been charged with any crime, launched a scathing attack on the Congolese government last month, describing it as a "dictatorship". A government spokesperson at the time rejected Kabila's criticism, saying he had "nothing to offer". Reacting to the announcement by the CSAC, activist and president of the African Association for the Defence of Human Rights, Jean-Claude Katende, said the ban constituted an "abuse of power", according to local media. Meanwhile, political analyst Ambroise Mamba indicated on X that the ban could be self-defeating because it could pique people's interest to find out about Kabila's movements and activities. Since returning to DR Congo after two years of self-imposed exile, Kabila's party has been posting his activities online, which include visiting civil society groups and local religious representatives in Goma. Emmanuel Navarrete vs Charly Suarez result overturned as rematch is ordered

Emmanuel Navarrete has been ordered to have a rematch with Charly Suarez after his controversial win was overturned to a No Contest. The Mexican claimed a technical victory over Suarez (18-0, 10 knockouts), but the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) has since reviewed the circumstances of the win after an appeal from Suarez's team. After doing so, it has now changed the result to a No Contest. That came after the bout went to the scorecards after eight rounds, due to Navarrete seemingly sustaining a cut from an accidental clash of heads, with the champion leading on all three cards at the time. Dr AnnMaria De Mars, commissioner of the CSAC, said: 'Suarez punched [Navarrete] directly where he got cut, but I'm always against changing a loss to a win.' The rules would dictate that if a replay was available before the result was announced, Suarez would have won, as Navarrete (39-2-1, 32 KOs) was unable to continue due to the severity of the cut. But the referee judged the cut to be from an accidental head clash and thus gave the win to Navarrette, due to his points lead. Since the judgement, the WBO has ordered an immediate rematch between Navarrete and Suarez, meaning that should the champion want to defend his belt in his next fight, it will have to be against the Filipino challenger. Suarez's lawyer, Ricardo Navalta, said that although the result of the review was positive, his fighter might have been robbed of the biggest moment of his career. He said: 'These guys spend their whole lives for a night like this. To feel that you didn't get a fair shake, that's pretty rough. This kid has already been deprived of his moment.' Top Rank boss Bob Arum already teased a show in the Philippines to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier's 'Thrilla in Manila', saying the rematch would be perfect for this card in the aftermath of the fight.

Silver Viper Minerals to Acquire Cimarron Gold-Copper Project

VANCOUVER, BC, May 8, 2025 /CNW/ - Silver Viper Minerals Corp. (" Silver Viper" or the " Company") (TSXV: VIPR) (OTC: VIPRF) has entered into an agreement with CSAC Holdings Inc. ("CSAC") and all of the shareholders of CSAC (collectively, the " Vendors") dated May 8, 2025 (the " Purchase Agreement") to acquire the Cimarron Project in Sinaloa, Mexico, a property hosting a porphyry gold-copper system (the " Transaction"). "This acquisition supports our strategy to build scale through the addition of high-quality gold, silver and copper assets in Mexico," said Steve Cope, President and CEO of Silver Viper. "Cimarron has benefited from extensive historical drilling and is ready for the next stage of infill and step-out work." Transaction Summary Pursuant to the terms of the Purchase Agreement, Silver Viper has agreed to acquire all of the outstanding common shares of CSAC from the Vendors in exchange for 9,000,000 common shares of Silver Viper. Closing remains subject to satisfaction of a number of conditions, including but not limited to, the receipt of the requisite TSX Venture Exchange approval of the Transaction and completion of satisfactory due diligence by Silver Viper of CSAC and the Cimarron Project, as well as other conditions customary for a transaction of this nature. Closing is expected to occur as promptly as possible following satisfaction of the closing conditions set out in the Purchase Agreement. Highlights of the Cimarron Project The Cimarron Project is located on the prolific porphyry belt from Arizona to Jalisco and is situated in the well-established mining jurisdiction of Mexico. The Cimarron Project lies between Mazatlán and Rosario in Sinaloa and is accessible via an 11-kilometre dirt road from a nearby paved road. The area is relatively flat, with low topographic contrast, supporting ease of access. An electrical line passes one kilometre south of the property. The nearby towns of Rosario—a historic mining community—and Mazatlán provide access to skilled local labour. Having considered some of the historical exploration undertaken on the Cimarron Project, Silver Viper believes that the Cimarron Project has potential for growth by focusing on three parts of the mineralized system, being Calerita, Lobo and Huanacaxtle. Most target areas of the Cimarron Project remain underexplored, and Silver Viper believes that trenching may offer an efficient, low-cost approach to generate additional drill targets, particularly in areas of soil anomalies. Further updates will be provided on activities to be undertaken at the Cimarron Project by Silver Viper following closing of the Transaction.
