Teenager Danish leaves national sprinters in his dust at Cahya Mata
KUALA LUMPUR: Teenager Danish Iftikhar Roslee stunned a host of national sprinters to win the men's 100m gold medal at the Cahya Mata Super Series at Merdeka Stadium on Saturday. The 18-year-old clocked 10.57s to beat national sprinter Jonathan Nyepa (10.66) and Penang's Tan Zhi Hang (10.70) to the line. Khairul Hafiz Jantan, the 2017 KL Sea Games champion, was fourth in 10.74. Although Danish's time was slower than his personal best of 10.47 set last year, the Johor-born student was thrilled to outpace the national sprinters. "I never expected to win the race against the best in the country. Surprisingly, I led from start to finish," said Danish, who scored 5As, 2Bs and 1C in his Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) exams. Several German sprinters competed as guests in the semi-finals to prepare for the World Relay Championships in Guangzhou, China, on May 11-12. "It was an honour to race against the German sprinters in the semi-finals. I did well to clock 10.56 and finish third behind Julian Wagner (10.40) and Heiko Gussmann (10.45)," added Danish, who hopes to race at the Asian Championships in Gumi, South Korea, on May 27-31. Meanwhile, Zaidatul Husniah Zulkifli, the national record holder at 11.49, clocked 11.72 to win the women's 100m final. Sabah's Nur Aishah Rofina Zulkifli was second in 11.80, while Azreen Nabia Alias of Malaysia Athletics came in third with 11.83.

Owen on fire at Merdeka Stadium
KUALA LUMPUR: Germany's fastest man Ansah Owen was in hot form at Merdeka Stadium today. He clocked 10.31s to win the men's 100m semi-final one in the Cahya Mata Super Series international athletics meet. Owen, 24, has a personal best of 9.99s. German Yannick Wolf won the semi-final two in 10.40s while Malaysia's Khairul Hafiz Jantan won the semi-final three in 10.55s. Owen also anchored the German 4x100m quartet (including Kevin Kranz, Yannick Wolf and Lucas Ansah-Peprah) to the gold, winning with a season best of 38.26s. The German B quartet of Julian Wagner, Alexandar Askovic, Chdiera Onuoha and Heiko timed 38.84s to finish second. Malaysia's Khairul, Jonathan Nyepa, Pengiran Aidil Auf Hajam and Zulfiqar Ismail finished third in 40.55s. The lanky Owen, who is training for three weeks in Malaysia for the World Relay Championships in Guangzhou, China on May 11-12, said: "I'm satisfied with the time of 10.31s. I believe there was a headwind." Asked about his bid to qualify for the 100m at the World Championships in Tokyo in September (qualifying time is 10s), Owen said: "I will focus on the World Relays in China before I discuss with my coaches to decide which competition to compete in. "I'm happy with the time we clocked (38.26s) today as it was our first relay run this year," said Owen who ran in the 200m in the 2022 World Championships in Eugene, United States. The German women's quartet of Sophia Junk, Nele Jaworski, Talea Prepens and Sina Kammerschmitt won the 4x100m in 43.43s. Malaysia's Azreen Nabila Alias, Zaidatul Husniah Zulkifli, Nur Afrina Batrisyia Rizal and Nur Aishah Rofina Aling clocked 45.50s to finish second. The Selangor team finished third (58.61s). Zaidatul, who holds the national women's 100m record of 11.49s, clocked the fastest time of 11.76s in the semi-finals.

German sprint stars storm into KL for Merdeka test
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's top sprinters will get a rare chance to test themselves against Germany's finest at the Cahya Mata Super Series at Merdeka Stadium this weekend. The German squad, using Malaysia as a training base ahead of next month's World Athletics Relay Championships in Guangzhou, will be led by Owen Ansah, the first German to break the 10-second barrier in the 100m. Ansah clocked 9.99s at the German Championships in Braunschweig last June, and will line up in both the 100m and 4x100m relay. Joining him are fellow speedsters Lucas Ansah-Peprah (PB 10.00), Yannick Wolf (10.08) and Julian Wagner (10.11), all set to compete in both the individual sprint and relay events. It will be an ideal benchmark for local stars Khairul Hafiz Jantan, Jonathan Nyepa, Pengiran Aidil Auf Hajam, and Malaysia Games champion Danish Iftikhar Roslee, as they aim to match up against elite opposition. The German men's and women's teams have been training in Malaysia for the past three weeks as part of their final preparations for the World Relays in China on May 10-11. In the women's 100m, national record holder Zaidatul Husniah Zulkifli (PB 11.49) will face a strong field, including Germany's top sprinter Sina Mayer, who holds the national record at 11.25. She will be joined by Sophia Junk, Rebekka Haase and Lisa Mayer, who are also slated to run in both the individual and relay events. Malaysia Athletics technical director John Ballard said the meet, which kicks off the local athletics season, will offer invaluable experience. "It's a great opportunity for our sprinters to line up against top-tier athletes from Germany," said Ballard. "Our runners are using this competition as part of their build-up for the Asian Championships in Gumi, South Korea from May 27-31." However, in a strategic move, the German men's sprinters will only run in the 100m semi-finals and sit out the final, in a bid to conserve energy for the World Relays. "The Germans will also field two teams each in the men's and women's 4x100m relays at this weekend's meet," added the Australian coach.
