Some are returning from the festival's second edition in 2024, while others will take the Alamein stage for the first time. Andromida - music Friday 18 July, 8pm El-Sawy Culturewheel, River hall, 26th of July street, Zamalek, Cairo One of the oldest active rock bands in Egypt, Andromida was formed by Amr Hassan & Ihab Al Qalie (keyboard and vocals). The band also includes Sherif El-Sharqawi (drums and vocals) and Ahmed Anwar (bass and vocals). Founded in Alexandria in 1987, the band is widely known for performing some of Pink Floyd's most well-known songs. Fathy Salama and Sheikh Mahmoud El-Tohamy - music Friday 18 July, 9pm Cairo Opera House, Open-Air Theatre, Zamalek, Cairo Titled Sufism vs Modernism, the concert brings together Grammy-winning musician Fathy Salama and renowned Islamic Sufi chanter Mahmoud El-Tohamy, joined by a diverse lineup of musicians. The project blends Egypt's rich Sufi and folkloric heritage with modern genres—including electronic, pop, hip hop, rock, and jazz—to create a contemporary musical dialogue. The son of legendary chanter Sheikh Yassin El-Tohamy, Mahmoud El-Tohamy is considered a master of traditional Islamic musical art. The concert is part of the Cairo Opera House's Summer Festival. The Mummification Lesson - theatre play Saturday 19 July, 7pm El-Jeeb Studio, Zamalek 'The Mummification Lesson,' a scientific and performative lecture presented by Omar El-Moutaz Bellah and moderated by Hoda Abdel Aziz, explores the ancient ritual of mummification through a dramatic and philosophical lens. The lecture delves into the convergence of religion, biology, magic, and cosmology—where the embalmed body is not merely preserved, but transformed into a vessel of promise that death is not annihilation, but metamorphosis. Combining theory and practice live on stage, the event traces the stages of mummification—material and metaphysical—unpacking its tools, substances, and ritual spells drawn from the Egyptian Books of the Afterlife. Far from a purely funerary act, the lecture repositions mummification as a sacred ritual uniting theology, science, and myth in a performance that is both intellectual and immersive. Hanan Mady - music Saturday 19 July, 9pm Cairo Opera House, Open-Air Theatre, Zamalek, Cairo Hanan Mady began singing at a young age and studied violin at the Cairo Conservatory, graduating in 1989. She made her singing debut with the theme song—composed by Omar Khairat—for the 1988 television series El-Leqaa El-Thany (The Second Meeting). Mady went on to perform in several popular TV series, including Yasser Abdel-Rahman's theme for El-Mal Wal-Banon (The Fortune and the Progeny, 1992–1995), and collaborated with renowned composers and lyricists such as Abdel-Azim Abdel-Haq, Helmi Bakr, Ahmad Fouad Negm, Ibrahim Abdel-Fattah, and Reda Amin. Over the course of her career, she released four albums, featuring fan favorites like Leilet Eshq, El-Bahr, Sheddy El-Dafayer, Asfour, and Kan W-Kan. The concert is part of the Cairo Opera House's Summer Festival. Ruby & Ahmed Saad - music Saturday 19 July Beach Resort, Marassi Ruby, the Egyptian singer and actress who rose to fame in the early 2000s, is known for her bold music videos and distinctive performance style. Beyond music, she has appeared in a range of film and television roles, demonstrating her versatility across romantic and dramatic genres. Ahmed Saad is a prominent Egyptian singer best known for his emotional ballads. Launching his career in the early 2000s, he quickly became a fixture in Egyptian film and television soundtracks, blending traditional Arabic vocals with modern pop and electronic elements. He often collaborates with major stars, including his brother, actor Amr Saad. The concert featuring both stars is part of Layali Marassi, a summer series showcasing leading singers at the Marassi Beach Resort. The concerts are held every Saturday through the end of August. 18th Egyptian National Theatre Festival 20 July - 6 August Launched in 2006, the Egyptian National Theatre Festival has grown into the country's largest annual event dedicated to the theatre movement. This year's lineup features a wide range of performances from troupes affiliated with various sectors of the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Cultural Palaces, the Art House for Theatre, the Academy of Arts, private theatres, and university and student groups from the Higher Institute of Theatrical Arts. Many of the plays have already premiered to critical and audience acclaim, while others are being introduced to wider audiences for the first time. Read more about the festival here Fouad & Mounib - music Sunday 20 July, 8pm Cairo Opera House, Open-Air Theatre, Zamalek, Cairo The story of Fouad and Mounib began in 2015, when the two musicians met on Facebook and started exchanging music. A few months later, they gave their first concert at Alexandria's Creativity Centre. Their popularity quickly grew, leading to performances at major venues such as the Cairo Opera House and the Bibliotheca Alexandrina's Arts Centre, as well as tours in Morocco and Austria. Over time, the duo pursued more ambitious projects, with Mounib arranging music for various ensembles and orchestras. The concert is part of the Cairo Opera House's Summer Festival. Tamer Hosny Delays Album "Lena Maad": Here's When It Arrives
Yara Sameh Egyptian singer-actor Tamer Hosny announced Wednesday that his upcoming studio album, "Lena Maad," has been delayed from July 10 to July 15. Due to reasons beyond our control and because of the internet issue in Egypt, I have just been informed by the companies responsible for releasing and distributing the album that it cannot be released tomorrow due to the internet not yet returning to its full and normal capacity, which will consequently prevent the artistic content from reaching all internet users in Egypt properly. As a result, the album release date has been postponed to Tuesday, July 15, instead of Thursday, July 10," he said in a statement on Instagram. Hosny released his last album 'Hormone ElSaada' in 2023. During his performance, he worked alongside other rising talents including, Sherine Mohamed Abdel-Wahab; the performance was attended by renowned producer Nasr Mahrous. Ever since, Hosny worked closely with Mahrous and released his first album, which consequently achieved great success and opened the gates of stardom and fame, not only in singing but also in the entertainment industry. He made his acting debut in the 2004 film 'Halet Hob', co-starring Hany Salama, Hend Sabry, and others. Hosny is known for singing 'Kol Mara', 'Bent El Eh' and 'Aktar Haga', and for his roles in films such as 'Omar and Salma' and 'Captin Hema'. Statue for Sir Magdi Yacoub
'I love Egypt and I love my work. I also love art and culture. I believe that medicine and culture are what give value to life.' The words were said by world renown Egyptian British heart surgeon Sir Magdi Yacoub during a celebration held in Cairo in his honour by the Ministry of Culture. Hosted at the Small Theatre of the Cairo Opera House, the event was held to commemorate Sir Magdi's humanitarian and scientific career, and announce the details of a project for a statue of him. The celebration was attended by Khaled Abdel-Ghaffar, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Health and Population; Ahmed Fouad Hano, Minister of Culture; Adel al-Naggar, Governor of Giza; sculptor Essam Darwish, the statue's designer; high ranking officials from the Ministry of Culture; and a host of public figures and national icons. 'I am grateful to my beloved country, Egypt, and to everyone who contributed to this project, which I see not only as a tribute to me personally, but also as a recognition of the value of science and humanitarian work in general,' Sir Magdi said, showing his deep appreciation for this national recognition. He then elaborated on the significance of culture to the growth of peoples. 'The civilisation and growth of peoples depend primarily on culture, which includes honouring community service, science and scientific research, as well as art, because science and health are incomplete without art. Culture, with all its elements, is what gives life its true meaning.' He stressed his deep belief in the value of culture and the arts as pillars of human development, just as science and health are foundations for advancing societies. Sir Magdi said he hoped that this honour would work as a source of inspiration for every young Egyptian who aspires to leave a mark, serving humanity. For his part, Minister of Culture Dr Hano talked about what he saw as God's greatest blessings to Egypt which is 'the men who have devoted their lives to serving humanity, not only with their knowledge, but also with their hearts, and with the hope they have instilled in the lives of others. Foremost among them is Sir Magdi Yacoub, a devoted son of Egypt, who was not just a gifted physician and world-class surgeon, but a humane person in every sense of the word. He believed that medicine is not just a profession, but a message of mercy and love, and that healing comes not from knowledge alone, but also from the heart. 'We are happy to announce the project to build a statue that embodies this inspiring journey, to serve as a symbol of the values embodied by the 'King of Hearts', [a title that Egyptians have fondly bestowed on Sir Magdi] and a renewed message of inspiration for generations.' The statue of Sir Magdi has been designed by Egyptian sculptor Essam Darwish; it is part of a broader project sponsored by the Ministry of Culture to honour Egyptian icons who left a profound impact on people's hearts and contributed to building the nation. 'Young people need true role models to inspire them and guide them towards the values upon which nations are built,' the Minister of Culture stressed. 'We are thus keen to embody these figures in our cultural arenas and institutions, so that they remain present in society's memory and a living witness to what dedication and hard work can achieve.' Dr Hano concluded by extending his gratitude and appreciation to Dr Abdel-Ghaffar, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Health and Population; Manal Awad, Minister of Local Development; Dr Naggar, Governor of Giza, for their sincere support and cooperation in bringing this project to fruition. He also specifically thanked Sir Magdi Yacoub for the knowledge and good he has provided—and continues to provide—to the people. Dr Abdel-Ghaffar, said that Sir Magdi is a global Egyptian figure and a symbol of dedication and humanity. The projects and services he provides, especially in southern Egypt, reflect a true love for his country and its people. He also makes great efforts to support and train young doctors, ensuring the continuation of his noble career, Dr Abdel-Ghaffar said. Mohamed Abu Saada, Chairman of the National Organisation of Urban Harmony reviewed the project's details, the statue's location, and its symbolic significance. He explained that the statue will stand in Kit Kat Square in the populous Giza district of Imbaba, near the Heart [cardiac] Institute busted by thousands of patients daily, giving the statue a symbolic significance linked to Sir Magdi's life work. Artist and sculptor Essam Darwish, beaming with pride, explained that the statue will be made of bronze, 6 meters tall, and will stand on an 8-meter-high pedestal. It is expected to be completed in eight months. According to Dr Naggar, Giza Governor, the Ministry of Culture will assume the technical aspect and provide full supervision of the implementation of the statue, while the governorate of Giza will provide the necessary funding and prepare the site to host the artwork. He said the governorate planned to implement, in cooperation with the National Authority for Urban Harmony, a comprehensive development project in the area, including upgraded sidewalks, vegetation, and traffic routes. A few days ago, on 18 June, the city of Aswan which is home to the famous Magdi Yacoub Heart Center, presented Sir Magdi with the key of Aswan, in recognition of his outstanding medical and humanitarian contributions.
