All you need to know about West Fife Show

West Fife Show is back next month, with organisers expecting thousands of people to attend one of Scotland's longest-running agricultural events. It takes place at Easter Bucklyvie Farm, Crossgates, on Saturday June 7. Now in its 257th year, the show is a mix of farming tradition, hands-on activities and rural entertainment. Visitors can expect a wide variety of attractions, including the ever-popular livestock competitions featuring cattle, sheep, goats and horses. Meanwhile, farming enthusiasts can also enjoy up-close access to tractors and machinery, thanks to support from regional dealerships and vintage exhibitors. Adding to the day's buzz will be a packed entertainment programme, with everything from sheep shearing and milking demonstrations to a children's tractor zone and baby animal tent. The much-loved dog show also returns, welcoming four-legged friends to compete in an afternoon of wagging tails and delighted spectators. A craft marquee will spotlight local makers and producers, offering everything from handmade gifts to artisan foods. Music, food trucks and bouncy castles promise plenty of other options for younger visitors and their families. A spokesperson for West Fife Show said: 'The show has evolved across generations, but at its heart it remains a celebration of our agricultural roots. 'Whether you're a seasoned farmer or a family on a summer day out, there's something here for everyone. 'Events like ours thrive, thanks to dedicated volunteers and supportive partners. 'Having Cala Homes (East) on board once again makes a real difference to what we can offer.' Housebuilder Cala is in its seventh consecutive year as a key sponsor of the show. Derek Lawson, strategic land director, Cala Homes (East), said: 'Events like West Fife Show are vital in celebrating the vibrancy of rural Scotland. We're proud to continue our longstanding support. 'This show brings together everything that's special about country life – from livestock to local crafts, food to family fun – and it offers a great day out for all ages, while promoting pride in the local community.' Cala's continued backing of West Fife Show complements its growing presence in the region, with recent investment and development in nearby Aberdour through the Inchcolm Green project. Saturday June 7, 8.30am-5pm. Easter Bucklyvie Farm, Crossgates, Fife. £10 online via at or £12 at the gate for adults, kids 14 and under get in free. Yes, and it's free Bearing in mind tit is held in a field, people must make their own assessment as to how easy it will be for them to navigate the area. There are no steep hills but, depending on the weather, the ground may be muddy in certain areas – which may make it less accessible for disabled visitors. The show will go on. You just need to remember to bring your jacket and a pair of wellies. If it's been wet on the lead up to the show, then show organisers recommend wearing boots or old shoes as it could still be soggy underfoot even if it's dry on the day.

Hamilton pupils learn about dangers of building sites

Woodhead Primary youngsters had an interactive lesson all about housebuilding with staff from construction firm Cala Pupils at a Hamilton school found at all about the construction industry from a housebuilder developing a nearby site – including the vital lesson of staying safe by staying away from construction sites. Woodhead Primary welcomed Jordan Hughes and Nicki Elliot of Cala Homes, who are building 26 new properties at Cornhill Village off Strathaven Road, which forms part of the wider Hamilton community growth area. ‌ Site manager Jordan told youngsters in the Primary Four and Five classes how staff work to keep the site safe including giving pupils the chance to try on protective equipment including hard hats and hi-vis vests, while they also learned about career opportunities in the construction sector. ‌ The Cala staff's visit formed part of the construction firm's Stay Safe, Stay Away programme educating youngsters about the dangers of playing at construction sites and which gives a 'stark warning about the dangers of going into construction areas unsupervised'. Jordan highlighted some of the hidden dangers on building sites and said: 'The Stay Safe, Stay Away programme is designed to spread the message to children that construction sites are not somewhere to play around – as responsible homebuilders we have created a programme that lets children and young people know that the message is serious but is presented in a way that's easy for them to digest.' The interactive session – part of Cala's community pledge to invest in areas where the company is building – also covered the history of constructing homes as well as the variety of career opportunities within the industry. Marketing co-ordinator Nicki added: 'Another aim of this initiative is to bring to life how new homes are developed and the important role that housebuilders play in creating sustainable new communities; it was great to see the children engaged with the presentation, and they especially enjoyed trying on different types of PPE which we use on site.' The Cornhill Village development of four- and five-bedroomed detached homes will incorporate biodiversity features and sustainable technology including solar panels, while a showhome has been kitted out with items supplied by Hamilton businesses as part of an initiative to showcase nearby brands and amenities to potential future residents. ‌ It is Cala's first development in Hamilton since constructing nearby Wellshaw Grove more than a decade ago, with the first residents of Cornhill Village set to move in this summer. * Don't miss the latest headlines from around Lanarkshire. New £28m Aberdeenshire housing development to support 190 local jobs

Aberdeen housebuilder Cala Homes says its new £28 million development in Inverurie will support 190 local construction jobs. 95 new properties are to built at Conglass, north of the town, near the A96. The scheme, which was approved by councillors last year, is expected to support 190 jobs, alongside a further 140 roles in the wider supply chain. The project will include 40 four-bedroom homes, 31 five-bedroom homes, and 24 'new affordable homes'. The Westhill-based developers have previously had plans for the site rejected over not meeting the local authority's minimum 40% quality open space policy. But with 25,000 sq m of open space it was approved by councillors last year. Ross Maclennan, Cala Homes (North) land director, said: 'We are thrilled to begin work on this exciting new development in Inverurie. 'This area has long been a desirable location due to its excellent transport links, strong community feel, and access to outstanding local amenities. 'At Cala Homes we are passionate about community and have engaged in consultations with local stakeholders throughout the planning process to ensure this development meets the aspirations and needs of local people. 'This collaborative approach has informed various aspects of the project, from architectural design to the enhancement of local infrastructure, aiming to create a development that complements and enhances the existing character of Inverurie.' Plans include the creation of pedestrian pathways, cycle routes, and landscaped communal areas. The first homes at the Inverurie development are expected to be released for sale later this year. Cala Homes previously sold out their 57-home development, The Grove, in Inverurie. Conglass is one of six north-east sites the company will build out this year, supporting more than 1,000 jobs across the region. A total of 303 homes will be built with 92 at Oldfold Village in Milltimber, 68 at Banchory's Upper Lochton, 76 at Grandhome and 67 at Silverburn in Bridge of Don. Ross added: 'We are pleased to be developing these vibrant communities and are looking to invest further in the region. 'We're on the lookout for exciting land opportunities to transform new sites into our exacting standards of high-quality homes. 'By proactively purchasing land in the north-east, we can continue to deliver thriving, sustainable new communities that highlight the very best in living that Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire can offer.' Cala was acquired by Patron Capital and Sixth Street Partners for £1.35 billion from Legal & General Group in September last year. The housebuilder employs more than 1,300 people across 10 offices and has around 75 live developments anytime. Its current Aberdeen projects include flagship sites at Craibstone, Grandhome and Milltimber. The business was founded in 1875 as the City of Aberdeen Land Association and was the first Scottish company listed on the London Stock Market. Today, its Scottish and English operations are run from offices in Edinburgh and Wooburn Green, Buckinghamshire. Financial services giant Legal & General acquired full control of the group in March 2018, raising its stake from 47.9% to 100% in a £315m deal.
