2 held for murder of youth who objected to their drunk ruckus

After a youth was allegedly beaten to death for opposing a group of drunkards who were creating a public nuisance on Sunday night, there has been tension in the Bakultala area of Jaynagar in South 24 Parganas district. Police have registered an FIR against 13 people and arrested two of them. According to police sources, Sayem Khan intervened when a group of intoxicated men in Buichbati, a locality in Bakultala, allegedly used obscene language and behaved indecently in public. Residents said the men assaulted Khan, who later died of his injuries while being taken to a Kolkata hospital. Tension peaked on Monday morning when residents blocked the road in protest, demanding the arrest of the accused. 'The alleged attackers, identified as Moktar Naskar and Qutubuddin Naskar from Rupnagar village, were among the men who returned to Buichbati on Sunday and attacked the Khan, resulting in fatal injuries. Both have been arrested. The investigation is on,' said a senior police officer. Khan's family claimed the two arrested accused have a history of criminal activities, including theft and robbery, and have frequently caused disturbances while intoxicated. 14-year-old boy given electric shock over ‘stealing cellphone', 1 held

A 14-year-old boy was allegedly tortured at a jeans dyeing factory in Maheshtala, South 24 Parganas, near Kolkata, on suspicion of stealing the factory owner's mobile phone, police officials said. The boy who works as a worker at the factory was allegedly hung upside down, beaten, and given electric shocks by the factory owner, Shahenshah, officials further said. A purported viral video of the incident led to police intervention, and the boy was rescued with serious injuries. 'An individual known to the main accused has been arrested and an investigation is ongoing,' an official said. The boy's family claims that he was falsely accused and they have filed a complaint. 'After searching, we found out that he did not steal the mobile phone. He was tortured in this way by slandering him. We have complained to the police,' the boy's uncle told media persons. The boy's family, on seeing the video, contacted the Islampur Police Station as well as filed a complaint at the Rabindranagar police station in Maheshtala. They also approached the Patagoda outpost of Islampur police station, demanding that police take immediate action to bring their son home safely. Police officials said that both the accused and the victim are from Islampur and the incident reportedly took place in the Kankhuli Purbapara area of Ward No. 8 at a factory, run from a rented house by the owner. Bengal: Governor resumes duties at Raj Bhavan, outlines new outreach initiatives

Governor CV Ananda Bose resumed his duties at Raj Bhavan on Thursday after a brief hospitalisation in April and May, having been declared fit by doctors. He's now refocusing on public outreach. Notably, Governor Bose ensured administrative efficiency during his medical leave, by clearing pending files and also continued his public interaction programme — 'Aamne Samne', through which he directly engages with citizens. He also engaged in extensive discussions with senior officials, emphasising on strengthening the people-centric initiatives that Raj Bhavan has spearheaded over the past two years. Additionally, the Governor issued a series of immediate directives aimed at enhancing public engagement and administrative responsiveness. The Governor reiterated his commitment to revamping and streamlining the Raj Bhavan machinery with a 'people-centric approach' to ensure its accessibility and neutral stance for the public good. His directives outline a robust plan for Raj Bhavan, prioritising intensified public engagement through village visits, to sensitise people against violence and promote social harmony, overnight stays, and district-level outreach. In order to improve accessibility, the OSDs and senior officers will be stationed in districts, facilitating direct citizen interaction and enabling the Governor to address concerns and provide instructions. In addition, the 'File to Field' progamme initiative will involve Raj Bhavan teams revisiting villages previously covered under 'AAMAR GRAM', to assess follow-up actions and track progress. Culturally, the Raj Bhavan will spearhead the Darjeeling Hill Festival, enhance its cultural programmes, and also launch a special scheme for financial aid to heart patients. Additionally, it will host a Sanskrit Colloquium in partnership with Calcutta University. According to Raj Bhavan sources, an interactive Jan Bhagidari Portal will be launched to boost public participation. Sweety Kumari reports from West Bengal for The Indian Express. Cab driver, aide held for ‘threatening' US tourist at Kolkata airport

THE BIDHANNAGAR police on Thursday arrested a taxi driver and his accomplice for allegedly threatening a US tourist after he landed at the Kolkata airport. The police action came after the tourist, Dustin, uploaded a video of a purported conversation with the two persons on his YouTube channel that soon surfaced on other social media platforms. The police identified the arrested as Manoj Roy (52) and Alamgir Molla (34), a taxi driver. A suo motu case has been registered at the NSCBI Airport Police Station, police said. According to Dustin, his 'unsettling experience' began shortly after landing in Kolkata when he booked a local taxi to his hotel on Park Street. Despite clear instructions, the driver intentionally drove him nearly 15 km in the wrong direction towards a different hotel in Rajarhat, claimed Dustin. When Dustin confronted the driver about the incorrect destination and refused to pay the inflated fare, the situation escalated. Another man entered the vehicle on the pretext of mediation and soon threatened Dustin with physical harm. Eventually, Dustin claimed, he was compelled to switch to another taxi. However, before he could leave, the second man demanded an additional Rs 100 for 'parking and petrol,' forcing Dustin to pay a total of Rs 800 for a trip that would have cost Rs 500-600 via an app-based cab. The video uploaded by Dustin surfaced on other social media platforms as well and action was taken, police said. Sweety Kumari reports from West Bengal for The Indian Express. Mob barges into police station seeking ‘handover' of stabbing suspect, 10 held

TEN PERSONS were arrested after a mob of around 150 people allegedly barged into a police station in the Bangaon area of North 24 Parganas, in West Bengal on Wednesday, demanding that a man who earlier allegedly stabbed and injured four persons be 'handed over' to them. Police resorted to lathicharge to disperse the crowd, leading to the arrests. The incident took place after a 'mentally unstable' 35-year-old man went on a 'stabbing spree', an officer said. Police soon apprehended him and brought him to the station. Citing local residents, sources claimed that the stabbing suspect may also be involved in the murder of his parents. A seven-member police team has been formed to verify this claim and carry out further investigation, said an officer. Soon, a large mob, including some people who are from the area where the four people were stabbed, gathered on the premises of the police station, the officer said. 'The mob demanded that the accused be handed over to them. Police dispersed the crowd and arrested 10 persons,' said Bangaon Superintendent of Police Dinesh Kumar A search is on to nab others involved in the 'attempted vandalism', police said. Police force has been deployed in the area. In a post on X, the Bangaon police wrote, 'There is no communal angle to the incident. Request all not to heed any kind of rumours. Rumour-mongers, as always, will be sternly dealt with as per law.' Sweety Kumari reports from West Bengal for The Indian Express.
