College student dies at Nicco park waterfall in Kolkata; probe on into cause
An 18-year-old college student died after falling unconscious on a simulated waterfall at Kolkata's Nicco Park on Wednesday. He was rushed to a private hospital in Salt Lake, where doctors declared him dead. According to the amusement park's authorities, Rahul arrived at around 11 am with a group of friends. Rajesh Raisinghani, managing director of the park, said they do not consider the death an 'accident', suggesting it may have been due to an underlying illness. 'Our staff suddenly saw some friends trying to bring a boy down (from the waterfall). He was found unconscious. Immediately, a wheelchair was brought in. He was first taken to primary care where the nurse found his pulse low, and suggested we take him to emergency services. By then, we had already called an ambulance. Later, doctors declared him dead. The incident took place this afternoon,' Raisinghani said. Park officials said that Rahul, along with 'four men and three women,' believed to be college students, were taking a shower on the first floor of the Niagara Falls simulation when he suddenly felt dizzy and collapsed. The Bidhannagar South police have taken charge of the investigation. Authorities are currently interviewing Rahul's friends to gather more information about the circumstances leading to his collapse. The unexpected death has reportedly caused panic and concern among other tourists visiting NICCO Park. The cause of death remains uncertain, and an investigation is on. No LLB 1st-semester exam on rape campus, CU releases list of 11 centres
1 2 3 4 Kolkata: Calcutta University has released a list of 11 centres where the first-semester examination for LLB will be held from July 16, excluding the college in south Kolkata where the rape incident occurred on June 25. The CU controller section has distributed these candidates among two other colleges. Meanwhile, around 200 students from this college are likely to take their first-semester examination at the department of law. Among four govt-aided colleges, this represents the highest number of examinees who will write their first-semester examination. Calcutta University's fact-finding team is probing several irregularities in the college that came to light after the rape incident. CU officials are surprised after learning that the number exceeded 200. One CU official said, "Since an investigation is underway, we cannot comment on this, but the allegation of excess admissions in the college is under scrutiny. We will cross-check this after receiving all original record books from the college. After the incident, the college appealed to the university not to use it as an examination centre because they felt that the present conditions made it difficult to conduct examinations there. Considering the plea from the college, the university has redistributed examinees, who were supposed to write the exam at the law college, to other centres. Among 11 centres under CU, three — department of law (CU), Surendranath Law College and Heritage Law College — have been allocated students from two colleges each. There are 14 law colleges, including four state-aided colleges, affiliated with Calcutta University. A CU official explained that shifting a centre involves considering several factors, especially distance. "Students of law colleges located in the city cannot be allocated distant centres. There won't be any a problem in making arrangements because all law colleges have sufficient infrastructure to accommodate additional examinees," a CU official said. Over 2,000 students from 14 CU-affiliated colleges will take the first-semester examination. CU law department will request police deployment during the exam. "If other colleges need security, they can approach the local police stations," said an official.

Tripura Town Hall To Be Renamed After Syama Prasad Mookerjee, Says CM Manik Shah
New Delhi: The BJP-led government in Tripura has announced that the Agartala Town Hall will be renamed after Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee, the founder of Bharatiya Jana Sangh, and a marble statue of the late leader will be installed in front of the building. The announcement was made by Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on Sunday, as part of events marking Mookerjee's 125th birth anniversary. Speaking at the Muktadhara Auditorium in Agartala, CM Saha also declared the launch of two annual awards in Mookerjee's name. One will be presented on Teachers' Day to individuals who have made significant contributions in their respective fields. Another, to be introduced next year, will recognise excellence in social, political, national, and administrative services. Sharing his thoughts on social media platform X, the chief minister described Mookerjee as a 'towering figure in safeguarding India's sovereignty after independence,' and praised his selfless service to the nation. 'With remarkable abilities, prestige, and intellect, he dedicated his life to nation-building, refusing to lead a self-centered existence,' Saha wrote. Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee was a towering figure in safeguarding India's sovereignty after independence. With remarkable abilities, prestige, and intellect, he dedicated his life to nation-building, refusing to lead a self-centered existence. On the 125th birth anniversary… — Prof.(Dr.) Manik Saha (@DrManikSaha2) July 6, 2025 He also recalled Mookerjee's distinguished public career, which included serving as India's first Industry Minister, Vice-Chancellor of Calcutta University, Mayor of Calcutta, President of the Hindu Mahasabha, and the founder of Bharatiya Jana Sangh. According to Saha, Mookerjee's ideology continues to be relevant and remains a source of inspiration for citizens today. The chief minister linked Mookerjee's legacy to the present, stating that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's development vision aligns with Mookerjee's ideals and that the goal of 'Viksit Bharat 2047' is an extension of that vision. 'After PM Modi took charge in 2014, we've seen societal transformation… Earlier, Mookerjee's contributions were deliberately sidelined, but now people can see the truth,' he said. Saha also pointed to Mookerjee's strong opposition to the Nehru-Liaquat Pact of 1950, an agreement between India and Pakistan concerning the rights and safety of minorities, as a testament to his uncompromising stance on national integrity. This disagreement ultimately led to his resignation from Jawaharlal Nehru's Cabinet. 'Dr. Mookerjee's opposition to injustice and his unwavering commitment to India's sovereignty continue to inspire the nation. His resignation over the Nehru-Liaquat Agreement is a powerful example of principled leadership,' Saha added in his post. Earlier in the day, the chief minister paid tributes to Mookerjee at a program held at the BJP state headquarters and later participated in a door-to-door campaign across Agartala Municipal Corporation to highlight the achievements of the Modi-led central government. The Agartala Town Hall, which is now being renamed, was originally constructed by the previous Left Front government after the demolition of Lal Mahal, a structure that was part of the erstwhile royal palace complex, which also included the Ujjayanta Palace and Laxmi Narayan Bari Temple.

SP Mukherjee was fearless voice of national unity: Adityanath
Chief minister Yogi Adityanath hailed Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder Dr Syama Prasad Mukherjee as a visionary scholar, passionate patriot and fearless voice of national unity on the occasion of his birth anniversary on Sunday. Adityanath paid floral tributes at Dr Mukherjee's statue at Civil Hospital. Yogi Adityanath pays tribute to Shyama Prasad Mukherjee on his birth anniversary, in Lucknow on Sunday. (Yogi Adityanath-X) Born on July 6, 1901, Mukherjee became the youngest vice chancellor of Calcutta University at just 33, and dedicated his life to serving the country. The chief minister emphasised that Dr Mukherjee's commitment to national unity and integrity remains unparalleled. 'His leadership during the Bengal famine earned him widespread respect and, as the food and industry minister in independent India under Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, he laid the foundation for food self-sufficiency and industrial growth—pillars that continue to shape New India,' the chief minister said. However, Dr Mukherjee resigned from the Nehru cabinet in protest against its appeasement-driven policies. He strongly opposed the special status granted to Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370 and the permit system, emerging as the first prominent voice of dissent, the chief minister said. As the founding president of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, he laid the ideological foundation for nationalist politics and gave the stirring call—'Ek desh mein do pradhan, do vidhan, do nishan nahi chalenge' (There cannot be two Prime Ministers, two Constitutions, and two flags in one nation), the chief minister added. Adityanath emphasised that Dr Mukherjee's vision was fulfilled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who abrogated Article 370—ensuring complete integration of Jammu and Kashmir with the rest of India, in the true spirit of 'Ek Vidhan, Ek Pradhan, Aur Ek Nishan.' He added that the region is now witnessing rapid development and progress, reflecting the realisation of Dr Mukherjee's dream of a united and empowered Bharat. He added that under PM Modi's leadership, India has emerged as a global investment hub. The industrialisation that Dr Mukherjee once envisioned has now taken a massive form, he said. Even during the global pandemic, India stood strong, providing free ration to 80 crore people—an initiative aligned with the ideals of welfare and self-reliance that Dr Mukherjee stood for, Adityanath said. Prominent among those present on the occasion included Rajya Sabha MP Dinesh Sharma, mayor Sushma Kharkwal, BJP leader Neeraj Singh and several others.
