SP Mukherjee was fearless voice of national unity: Adityanath
Born on July 6, 1901, Mukherjee became the youngest vice chancellor of Calcutta University at just 33, and dedicated his life to serving the country.
The chief minister emphasised that Dr Mukherjee's commitment to national unity and integrity remains unparalleled.
'His leadership during the Bengal famine earned him widespread respect and, as the food and industry minister in independent India under Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, he laid the foundation for food self-sufficiency and industrial growth—pillars that continue to shape New India,' the chief minister said.
However, Dr Mukherjee resigned from the Nehru cabinet in protest against its appeasement-driven policies. He strongly opposed the special status granted to Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370 and the permit system, emerging as the first prominent voice of dissent, the chief minister said.
As the founding president of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, he laid the ideological foundation for nationalist politics and gave the stirring call—'Ek desh mein do pradhan, do vidhan, do nishan nahi chalenge' (There cannot be two Prime Ministers, two Constitutions, and two flags in one nation), the chief minister added.
Adityanath emphasised that Dr Mukherjee's vision was fulfilled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who abrogated Article 370—ensuring complete integration of Jammu and Kashmir with the rest of India, in the true spirit of 'Ek Vidhan, Ek Pradhan, Aur Ek Nishan.'
He added that the region is now witnessing rapid development and progress, reflecting the realisation of Dr Mukherjee's dream of a united and empowered Bharat.
He added that under PM Modi's leadership, India has emerged as a global investment hub. The industrialisation that Dr Mukherjee once envisioned has now taken a massive form, he said. Even during the global pandemic, India stood strong, providing free ration to 80 crore people—an initiative aligned with the ideals of welfare and self-reliance that Dr Mukherjee stood for, Adityanath said.
Prominent among those present on the occasion included Rajya Sabha MP Dinesh Sharma, mayor Sushma Kharkwal, BJP leader Neeraj Singh and several others.

'Not found suitable' clause weaponised against SCs, STs, OBCs to deny them job opportunities: Congress
The Congress on Sunday (July 27, 2025) slammed the Narendra Modi government over vacant reserved posts for SCs, STs, and OBCs in central universities and alleged that the "not found suitable" clause was being "weaponised" against these categories to deny them fair employment opportunities. Congress general secretary (communications) Jairam Ramesh cited a written reply in Parliament by Minister of State for Education, Sukanta Majumdar last week to attack the government. In his reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha on July 23, Mr. Majumdar said that for the post of professor, out of 308 seats reserved for the SC community, 111 had been filled; out of 144 seats for the ST community, 24 had been filled, and out of 423 seats, 84 had been filled. For associate professor, out of 632 posts for SCs, 308 had been filled; out of 307 posts for STs, 108 been filled; and out of 883 posts for OBCs, 275 had been filled. For assistant professor, out of 1,370 posts for SCs, 1,180 had been filled; out of 704 posts for STs, 595 had been filled; and out of 2,382 posts for OBCs, 1,838 had been filled, the Union Minister had said. In a post on X, Mr. Ramesh said that in its reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha, the Modi government has revealed the staggering level of vacancies among SC, ST, and OBC reserved faculty positions in central universities. '80% positions for OBCs, 83% positions for STs, and 64% positions for SCs at the professor level are vacant. In the general category, the vacancies are 39%. 69% positions for OBCs, 65% positions for STs, and 51% positions for SCs at the associate professor level are vacant. In the general category, the vacancies are 16%,' he said. "23% positions for OBCs, 15% positions for STs, and 14% positions for SCs at the assistant professor level are vacant. In the general category, the vacancies are only 8%," he added. While the government has claimed that it does not centrally collect data on the prevalence of "not found suitable" (NFS) during the recruitment for faculty positions, the data is unequivocal, Mr. Ramesh said. The distinctly higher level of vacancies among reserved positions as compared to general category positions clearly points to a much higher prevalence of NFS for these candidates, he contended. "This is clear evidence of the issue that @Rahul Gandhi has raised -- that NFS is being weaponised against SC, ST, and OBC candidates to deny them fair employment opportunities and to subvert the Constitutional provision for reservations in public employment," Mr. Ramesh said. Mr. Gandhi on Friday also attacked the Modi government over vacant reserved posts for SCs, STs, and OBCs in central universities and said this is not just negligence but a "well-planned conspiracy" to keep "bahujans" out of education, research and policies. He had demanded that all such vacant posts be filled immediately and 'Bahujans' be given their rights, not "Manuwadi boycott".

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Sunday said that he has no information on the actual reason for Jagdeep Dhankhar resigning as the Vice-President, adding that the matter is between the former V-P and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Noting that Dhankhar always took the government's side, the Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha said he never allowed the opposition, whenever it tried to raise issues, whether it was concerning farmers or poor or on foreign policy issues, news agency PTI reported. "I don't know all those details. He (Dhankhar) was always on the government's side. He should say what happened," Kharge said in response to a question whether Dhankhar was forced to resign as he spoke in favour of farmers. Kharge also said that whenever the opposition tried to raise issues concerning farmers, poor, international issues, or foreign policy, Dhankhar 'never used to give' them an opportunity (in Rajya Sabha as its Chairman). Speaking to reporters in Karnataka's Vijayapura, Kharge added, 'When we tried to raise issues by giving notices on issues regarding the poor, atrocities against women, dalits, and downtrodden, and incidents like Hindu-Muslim clashes, he did not give us an opportunity. It (reason for Dhankhar's resignation as Vice President) is between him and Modi. We don't have any information on that.' In a surprise move, Jaideep Dhankhar on July 21 resigned from his post as Vice President, citing medical reasons for his decision, but triggering speculation in political circles. In his resignation letter to President Droupadi Murmu, Dhankhar said he was stepping down with immediate effect to 'prioritise health care'. The Congress party-led Opposition, however, dismissed the explanation of medical issues behind the 74-year-old's abrupt move, claiming instead that 'far deeper reasons' are at play. On July 22, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wished Dhankhar good health. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh reacted with a dig at the PM. Ramesh, like he usually does, said on X that PM Modi's social media post had "added to the mystery of his abrupt exit." Responding to a question about changing the Karnataka Congress president, Kharge said, "All those things cannot be said now. Will speak later." Currently, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar is holding the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president post on an extended tenure. There have been voices within the ruling Congress in the state to replace him, citing him holding two key positions.

Congress sidelines ally NC with solo push for J&K statehood, raising pressure on ruling party
SRINAGAR: For the first time since the formation of the Omar Abdullah-led government in Jammu and Kashmir last year, the Congress party has pushed its ally, the National Conference (NC), into an uncomfortable political corner. By unilaterally stepping up its campaign for the restoration of statehood, Congress has not only bypassed its long-time partner but also taken the battle to the national stage on its own terms. Congress, which contested the 2024 J&K Assembly elections in alliance with NC and won six seats, has so far refused to join the government, maintaining it would only do so once statehood is restored. Now, the party has intensified its push by organising protests in Srinagar, Jammu, and at Jantar Mantar in Delhi. Top Congress leaders, including party president Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, have written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, demanding that a bill to restore statehood be introduced during the ongoing monsoon session of Parliament. Congress's assertive stance appears to have caught the NC off guard. While the NC campaigned on restoring Article 370, the issue was effectively shelved after the party formed the government.
