Calhan School District partners with AI gun detection system

(CALHAN, Colo.) — Calhan School District (CSD) has partnered with ZeroEyes, an AI-based gun detection video analytics system, to increase school safety. Calhan School District said ZeroEyes was integrated with the existing school security camera system. According to a press release from ZeroEyes, if a firearm is detected, the images are shared with the ZeroEyes Operations Center, which is staffed 24/7/365 by military and law enforcement veterans. If a threat is determined to be valid, first responders and local staff are alerted and given information on the visual description, gun type, and last known location. ZeroEyes said an alert can be given as quickly as three to five seconds after detection. 'While we are incredibly fortunate to have a close partnership with our local law enforcement, we know that in situations where every second counts, technology like ZeroEyes can make all the difference,' said Dr. Donovan Mitchell, Superintendent of CSD. 'Our goal is to ensure teachers can teach and students can learn without worrying about their safety. We hope we never face a gun-related threat on our campus, but if we do, we want to have as many systems in place as possible to combat it—and ZeroEyes is a key part of that.' Calhan School District said the partnership is thanks to a grant from the state of Colorado called the School Access for Emergency Response Grant Program (SAFER), which paid for the integration with ZeroEyes and for the partnership to last several years. The system has been up and running since the return from winter break. 'Calhan School District's commitment to safety is a powerful example for schools across the country,' said Mike Lahiff, CEO and co-founder of ZeroEyes. 'We believe this integration will greatly enhance their ability to respond to gun-related threats swiftly and effectively, and we are honored that CSD has placed their trust in us to help protect their community.'
