Cam Heyward says Aaron Rodgers has ‘bought in' after initially calling out QB's waiting game
Aaron Rodgers is getting rave reviews from his teammates ahead of training camp. Veteran defensive lineman Cam Heyward, who has spent his entire 11-year career with the Steelers, is all in on having No. 8 in the fold and behind center for the team this year in a bit of an about-face. 3 Cam Heyward talks Aaron Rodgers buying in. YouTube Rich Eisen Show Advertisement 'It just felt like he has bought in, and it worked out for the best,' Heyward said on 'The Rich Eisen Show' on Wednesday. 'I know sometimes we live in a society where we want things now. But patience has a way of paying off. And to now see he's a Pittsburgh Steeler, and just him walking through the locker room asking questions [about] how we do things. He's bought in, and that's all I can ask for our quarterback. As a teammate, I'm excited to go work with him.' Heyward previously said he would not recruit Rodgers while the ex-Jet pondered whether he would sign with the Steelers for several months. 'Either you want to be a Pittsburgh Steeler or you don't. That's simple. That's the pitch. If you want me to recruit, that's the recruiting pitch. Cam Heyward: Aaron Rodgers has bought in
While Aaron Rodgers was taking his time to decide whether or not to sign with the Steelers, longtime Pittsburgh defensive lineman Cam Heyward made some pointed comments about his hesitancy to join the team. Heyward said he wouldn't make any pitch to Rodgers about signing because "either you want to be a Pittsburgh Steeler or you don't" and added that it would be "no skin off my back" if Rodgers opted not to hop aboard. Now that Rodgers has taken the plunge, Heyward says that he has no doubts about whether the veteran is fully invested in what the team is doing. "It just felt like he has bought in, and it worked out for the best," Heyward said this week on 'The Rich Eisen Show'. "I know sometimes we live in a society where we want things now. But patience has a way of paying off. And to now see he's a Pittsburgh Steelers and just him walking through the locker room asking questions how we do things. He's bought in and that's all I can ask for our quarterback. As a teammate, I'm excited to go work with him." Rodgers has signaled that he will be one and done with the Steelers and that means everyone in Pittsburgh will have to be all the way in for the Steelers to have the kind of postseason success that's eluded them since they lost to Rodgers in Super Bowl XLV.

As the deal broke, emotions ran high, especially for veteran defensive lineman Cam Heyward. While fans were still absorbing the shocking trade that sent safety Minkah Fitzpatrick away, Heyward shared his honest thoughts on the move, and what he really feels about welcoming Jalen Ramsey to the team. Cam Heyward admits he was shocked by the Minkah Fitzpatrick trade Cam Heyward, one of the team's longest-tenured leaders, didn't hold back when talking about the blockbuster trade during an interview on The Rich Eisen Show on Wednesday, July 17, 2025. The Steelers had just completed a deal that brought seven-time Pro Bowl cornerback Jalen Ramsey and tight end Jonnu Smith to Pittsburgh. But in return, the team parted ways with All-Pro safety Minkah Fitzpatrick, along with a few late draft picks. — astockeywtae (@astockeywtae) Heyward explained that at first, he was excited about the idea of adding Ramsey. 'The way it came out, I thought we were just bringing Jalen in for a pick,' Heyward said. 'And then I found out it's a trade with Minkah, and I'm like, 'Damn.'' The move was bittersweet for Heyward, who called Fitzpatrick a key part of the group. Still, he acknowledged Ramsey's talent and said, 'There's no shortage of talent there.' Jalen Ramsey brings versatility to the defense, he can play corner, slot, or safety and Heyward is looking forward to seeing him and new receiver DK Metcalf on the same sideline. The Steelers are clearly loading up for 2025, with one season of Aaron Rodgers expected at quarterback. Cam Heyward says Jalen Ramsey adds fire to Steelers defense Cam Heyward believes Jalen Ramsey will bring more than just talent to Pittsburgh. He praised Ramsey's competitive nature and leadership on the field. 'Jalen just wants to play ball. He wants to compete at the highest level,' Heyward said. 'You've got to welcome what all a player brings, that's what makes a good team.' The Steelers also face another major decision. T.J. Watt hasn't yet signed a contract extension, and trade rumors are growing. But Heyward won't let that happen without a fight. 'I'm going up to Omar and telling him, 'That's not happening.'' As the Steelers prepare for 2025, Heyward hopes Watt stays, Ramsey shines, and the team finally breaks its playoff win drought. Catch Rani Rampal's inspiring story on Game On, Episode 4. Watch Here!

For better or worse: Steelers defense edition
It has been a crazy offseason for the Pittsburgh Steelers. After another disappointing season in 2024, it's clear the Steelers are trying to load up certain positions to make a big run in 2025. The Steelers haven't won a playoff game since 2016 and all of the roster moves the front office made tells us it's playoff win or bust for the Steelers. The Steelers rely heavily on its defense and 2025 will be no different. But is this group an improvement over last season in the big picture and more importantly, which defensive positional units are better and which are worse? Advertisement Defensive line Despite an elite season by defensive tackle Cam Heyward, this group was a serious disappointment. Nose tackle Keeanu Benton didn't show any growth and the rest of the group. This was a huge area of emphasis for the Steelers in the offseason as they drafted defensive tackles Derrick Harmon and Yahya Black, both significant upgrades over Larry Ogunjobi and Montravius Adams. BETTER Outside linebacker Another edge defender wasn't a huge need for the Steelers but former Ohio State star Jack Sawyer was just too good to pass him up. His addition makes this group the deepest and most talented in the NFL with T.J. Watt, Alex Highsmith and Nick Herbig already in place. BETTER Advertisement Inside linebacker We were excited to see Patrick Queen and Payton Wilson as the starters this season but worried about the depth. But now, with Malik Harrison signed and Cole Holcomb healthy, this group makes a case to be the best in the AFC like the Steelers are at outside linebacker. BETTER Cornerback After losing Donte Jackson in free agency, the Steelers went out and signed Darius Slay to replace him and we weren't impressed. But when the Steelers traded for Jalen Ramsey in June, it really finalized the cornerback depth chart and even though Slay and Ramsey might both be a little past their prime, it's still an improvement. BETTER Advertisement Safety The move to make the Steelers' cornerbacks better did, in turn, make the safety positional unit worse. Losing Minkah Fitzpatrick guts this unit and Juan Thornhill can't fill that void. This group is not going to be in a position to be a playmaking group in 2025.
