Fairfax County Public Schools defends new cell phone policy as some question whether it complies with law
FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. () — Virginia's largest school district has a new cell phone policy that is getting some pushback. The new rules that Fairfax County Public Schools adopted are more lenient than other school districts — they allow high school students to use their phones at lunch during the 2025-26 school year. Why strawberry season is coming to an early end in Northern Virginia While the school district is defending both the effects and legality of its new policy, some argue that it may violate a new law. Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin signed the Bell to Bell law. The law states that should be no phone usage from 'bell to bell,' as in 'after the first bell rings at the start of the school day to begin instructional time until the dismissal [bell] rings at the end of the school day.' It also includes 'lunch and time in between class periods.' However, FCPS told DC News Now that its policy meets the requirements of the law. '[The policy] is fully compliant with the new Virginia Code section because it restricts and regulates student cell phone use in an age-appropriate way,' FCPS stated. First-ever Capital Cup in DMV celebrates LGBTQ+ sports community 'Our existing policy is the best approach to give our high school students the chance to learn how to appropriately navigate the use of technology, which will likely be an important aspect of their lives moving forward,' School Board Vice-Chair Sandy Anderson said at a meeting last month. Three school board members attempted to pass an amendment restricting the use of phones for the entire school day, but it failed. 'I also have a teenager I would love for him to use his cell phone in the lunchroom because I think that's a space that's a little bit less restrictive, but it is not the law,' said School Board Member Ricardy Anderson, who backed the amendment. A spokesperson for Youngkin told DC News Now that the new restriction is the 'law of the land.' 'Any school division that does not currently have a Bell-to-Bell cell phone restriction policy will have to update their policy,' the spokesperson said. New survey shows Northern Virginia business leaders pessimistic about region's economy The governor's office also shared a statement with DC News Now from Secretary of Education Aimee Guidera, in which she criticized the district's decision. 'It's a shame Fairfax continues to deny the well-established fact that a bell-to-bell cellphone-free education is more beneficial for students and is choosing instead to be an outlier among the overwhelming number of school districts that have gone bell to bell in Virginia,' the statement read in part. Montgomery Co., LGBTQ+ leaders discuss potential impact of Trump's suicide hotline proposal
MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) – The Trump Administration is proposing to eliminate a division of the nation's suicide hotline that specifically serves LGBTQ+ youth. On Wednesday, Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich and leaders in the county's LGBTQ+ community say the changes could be a matter of life and death. 'This presidency has brought a heightened level of fear and uncertainty not only for myself,' Phillip Alexander Downie, CEO of the MoCo Pride Center, said, 'but for many LGBTQIA+ people.' First-ever Capital Cup in DMV celebrates LGBTQ+ sports community Downie grew up in Montgomery County and says he's pleased with the progress the county has made in creating safe spaces for him and others in the LGBTQ+ community to be themselves authentically. 'Having local governments like Montgomery County actively affirm our community makes all of the difference,' he said. But Downie says that progress is now being threatened by the Trump Administration. 'To have a current president and administration who is actively seeking to dismantle protections for anyone who is not a white, cis, straight male, 'he said, 'that is extremely scary.' According to a leaked draft of the federal budget, President Trump has plans to eliminate a service within the 988 Suicide and Crisis Prevention Hotline that specifically serves the LGBTQ+ community. Downie says this would be detrimental if passed. 'It's lifesaving,' he said, 'It is absolutely lifesaving having that number available for youth.' Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich agrees. 'We all know that the LGBTQ+ community youth face higher risks of suicide,' Elrich said. 'Cutting off support in the middle of a mental health crisis is cruel and it's dangerous.' Dr. Amena Johnson serves as the LGBTQ+ Liaison in the county's Office of Community Partnership. She worries about what may be in store for the LGBTQ+ community over the next three years. 'It is very clear in the wording that this administration is using that they are trying to criminalize parents that support their trans children,' Johnson said, 'but also, anyone who supports transpeople and trans youth.' President Trump's budget is not yet finalized. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

Eleonora Cottrell previews Brentford Women v Camden Town
'It's just another test and just another challenge," said Cottrell. "We're hoping to keep the title and we're just excited." The Bees bounced back from a League Cup loss against Fulham to beat Whyteleafe last weekend. Cottrell said the Cottagers defeat ensured the side will stay focused between now and the end of the season. 'I think it's always good to have setbacks, just to make sure that we always keep pushing. We just want to win everything now, so fingers crossed we do. 'Our focus is the league at the moment but if we win a cup as well, it's a bonus." Six goals in each half saw the Bees defeat Whyteleafe 12-0 in the league last Sunday afternoon. Paula Holguin scored her first hat-trick in Brentford colours with Nikki Woods adding another treble of her own. Chloe Logie, Lucy Potter, Maddie Phillips, Samantha Read, Alissa Down and Kirsty Matthews were also on target. Last time out in the Capital Cup, Osborne's side cruised to an 8-1 home win over Comets. Logie starred up front with five goals in the first half and one after the break, with Holguin and Woods adding a goal each to complete a dominant display. Camden Town compete in the Greater London Premier Division, the same league as Brentford Women B. They sit third in the league table with seven wins, a draw and a loss from their nine outings to date. Camden are seven points behind league leaders Hammersmith but have three games in hand over the current table-toppers. Dating back to mid-December, they have enjoyed a strong run of form, winning four successive games across all competitions. In their latest outing, they cruised past Civil Service 7-0 to continue their JGMT Cup run. Maria Vera has led the way up front with eight goals in 11 appearances, while Victory Edema has contributed seven goals from nine games. To all fans heading to Bedfont on Sunday, please be aware that there is limited parking available at the venue. Public transport is available. Hatton Cross train station is a 10-minute walk away while bus services are also available along Hatton Road. Entry to the game is free and the entrance to Bedfont is located on Hatton Road. There is plenty of seating available for fans around the pitch as well as standing room.
