UEFA pledges new humanitarian aid for Gaza children: A Salah effect? asks British journalist - Talents Abroad

A prominent British football writer has questioned whether UEFA's announcement of new partnerships with humanitarian organisations to support children in Gaza is a response to Egyptian star Mohamed Salah's post condemning the killing of former Palestinian footballer Suleiman al-Obeid in an Israeli airstrike in southern Gaza as he awaited aid. The UEFA Foundation for Children said on Tuesday it will work with Médecins du Monde, Médecins Sans Frontières and Handicap International to deliver medical care, psychosocial support, food kits and education on the dangers of explosive remnants to children affected by the war. UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin said the move was part of a wider mission to help young people in conflict zones, adding: 'Children are innocent… we must do what we can to help those who are trying to make life more tolerable and normal for them.' Henry Winter, a prominent British football writer, asked whether the move was a response to Salah's pointed remarks, writing on X: 'The Salah effect? UEFA establishes partnerships with Médecins du Monde, Médecins Sans Frontières and Handicap International… providing vital humanitarian help for the children of Gaza, who are enduring what UN Secretary General António Guterres has described as 'a humanitarian catastrophe of epic proportions'.' On Sunday, Salah, the Liverpool and Egypt forward, reposted UEFA's brief condolence message on X to his 19.4 million followers, asking: 'Can you tell us how he died, where, and why?' The message was in tribute to Al-Obeid, known as the 'Palestinian Pele,' who, according to the Palestine Football Association (PFA), was killed last week in an Israeli airstrike in southern Gaza. Al-Obeid, 41, scored more than 100 goals in his career and earned 24 caps for Palestine. The PFA says 421 footballers, including 103 children, have been killed or died from starvation in Gaza since the war began, with 288 sports facilities damaged or destroyed. UEFA said its new Gaza-focused aid will run alongside existing projects in other conflict areas including Ukraine, Sudan, Lebanon, Yemen, Syria and Afghanistan. Panova: Egypt's Youth & Sports Strategy Sends ‘Powerful Message' on Nation's Future

Ahmed Emam Egypt marked International Youth Day with the official launch of its "National Strategy for Youth and Sports (2025–2032)" , in a high-profile ceremony at the St. Regis Hotel in the New Administrative Capital, attended by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and Minister of Youth and Sports Ashraf Sobhy, alongside senior government officials, development partners, and youth representatives. The new strategy, developed after extensive nationwide consultations, aims to empower Egypt's young population — nearly **60 percent of whom are under the age of 30** — through targeted investments in education, employment, sports, and community engagement. UN Resident Coordinator in Egypt, speaking at the event, underscored the significance of launching the strategy on International Youth Day, calling it 'a statement of intent that Egypt sees its young people not only as the promise of tomorrow, but already as active contributors to the progress of today.' The strategy's development involved 21 workshops across 11 cities, surveys of over 10,000 young people, and the formulation of more than 400 actionable measures, reflecting a 'policy made with youth, not just for youth,' the UN official noted. A key pillar of the plan is leveraging sport as a catalyst for empowerment, inclusion, and economic growth. Citing the multi-billion-dollar global sports industry, officials highlighted Egypt's vision to harness sports not only for recreation, but as a driver of jobs, tourism, health, and national pride. The initiative builds on existing partnerships between Egypt and the United Nations, including: "Shabab Balad" , Egypt's branch of the global "Generation UN limited" movement, which connects young people to education, employment, and empowerment. In 2024 alone, more than 364,000 Egyptians, most of them young people, gained new skills through UN-supported programmes. Young entrepreneurs are also leading the way in green growth, agribusiness, and smart innovation, while community coach initiatives are empowering young women in sports and social leadership. 'This strategy sends a powerful message: that the skills, dreams, and energy of young people are essential for the nation's future,' the UN Resident Coordinator said, urging Egypt's youth to 'keep pushing and bringing ideas to the table.' The government and UN pledged to work together to ensure the strategy delivers on its vision of a healthier, more dynamic, and more confident generation of Egyptians, capable of contributing to both national development and global progress. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid Videos & Features Story behind Trending Jessica Radcliffe Death Video News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture Lebanese Media: Fayrouz Collapses after Death of Ziad Rahbani

Last Liverpool goal had special meaning for Jota - World

Diogo Jota revealed the emotional meaning behind his last Liverpool goal in a touching interview before his death in a car crash. Jota and his brother Andre Silva died when their Lamborghini went off the road in the accident in northern Spain on July 3. The Portugal forward was on his way back to England to start pre-season training after helping Liverpool win the Premier League title last term. Jota's final goal for Liverpool was the vital winner in the Merseyside derby against Everton at Anfield in April. Speaking in an interview just weeks before his death, Jota admitted he felt proud to be able to contribute to Arne Slot's team by scoring in such an important game. "It was a very tough season for me but I was always there fighting and I could help the team that day and I'm proud of what I could still do," he said in the documentary titled "Champions 24-25: The Inside Story". "It's hard to describe. That's the feeling I look for when I play football, that's why you put all your life and all your efforts to moments like that, moments where you can decide an important game." Jota, 28, spent five years with Liverpool after joining from Wolves in 2020. He won the Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup during his time at Anfield. "It is something I could not even dream as a kid, I wanted to play in the Premier League but I could never imagine to win it," Jota said in the documentary about his Liverpool success. "Pictures that will be shown forever. It is a remarkable achievement for a small guy that came from Gondomar, where I had this dream." Liverpool have posthumously retired his number 20 shirt and the club have announced that Jota will be remembered with a permanent sculpture outside Anfield, while a mural of the star already adorns the wall of a building near the stadium.
