Gabriela Ruffles leads Australian trio, with Minjee Lee and Grace Kim, in hunt for Evian Championship
A trio of Australians are eyeing more major glory as Gabriela Ruffels and England's Cara Gainer share a one-shot lead on 11-under par after the third round of the Evian Championship on Saturday. Lurking one stroke back is three-time major champion, and former Evian Championship winner, Minjee Lee and fellow Australian Grace Kim. Gainer, making her debut at the fourth women's major of the year, surged up the leaderboard with a 64 highlighted by an eagle on the seventh hole and six additional birdies. 'I made a great par save on the first which really settled my nerves,' said Gainer. 'My eagle putt was definitely a highlight of the day. I hit a great drive, a great hybrid into the green about ten feet and holed the putt.' Ruffels faltered at the start of her round with a bogey on the opening hole but bounced back straight away with a birdie, then added six more. She said: 'I'm having so much fun. 'This is what you practice for, what you play for. I've been working so hard, and it's great to see the hard work pay off.' One shot behind the pair in a tie for third on 10-under par are Lee and Kim, Thailand's Jeeno Thitikul and South Korean overnight leader Lee So-mi. Lee trailed by seven shots going into the final round of the Evian Championship in 2021, and said that gave her confidence that she could produce something special here. 'I'm usually always pretty relaxed, but I definitely feel like I have a different mentality and maybe a little bit different fire in me after KPMG,' said Lee. 'I definitely have a little different motivation I think coming off that win. 'I just feel like I'm in a really good position right now and can chase tomorrow. 'Obviously I was way back (in 2021) and I shot a really good score on Sunday to get into that playoff. 'Going into that I wasn't expecting to shoot a score like that, but then I did and I was obviously happy. 'I was really clutch in the playoff, so that really brings back great memories. 'It feels like a lifetime ago really. Four years, that sounds like a long time.'

Leona Maguire four off the lead at Evian Championship heading into final day
England's Cara Gainer and Australia's Gabriela Ruffels share a one-stroke lead at 11 under entering the final round of the Evian Championship, as Leona Maguire shot a one-under-par 70 in the third round of the Major to leave herself four behind. Gainer carded a seven-under 64 and Ruffels shot 66 in the third round on Saturday at the Evian Resort Golf Club in Evian-les-Bains, France. Maguire battled back well after a disappointing start saw her bogey the par 3 second hole which she had got a hole-in-one and birdie on over the first two days. A birdie and bogey followed before a strong finish that saw her birdie two of the last four holes to finish on seven under. World number two Jeeno Thitikul of Thailand, three-time Major winner Minjee Lee and fellow Australian Grace Kim, and second-round leader Somi Lee of South Korea are all 10 under at the fourth of this season's five LPGA Tour majors. READ MORE Gainer (29) picked up her maiden title on the Ladies European Tour in Morocco in February. She tied for third at an LET event at this course in May. 'I've got confidence coming from that tournament,' she said. 'I know it's set up slightly different, but I have good feelings and good vibes in this amazing beautiful place.' Gainer put herself into contention for her first Major victory with six birdies, an eagle at the par-5 seventh hole and one bogey Saturday. Ruffels (25) has three titles on the Epson Tour but her best finish in a Major was a tied-13th at the US Women's Open in 2020. She opened the third round with her only bogey of the day before posting six birdies, including four during a five-hole stretch from numbers 11-15. 'Putter was really good today,' Ruffels said. 'Made some putts inside 15 feet. And, yeah, was just super solid tee to green.' Japan's Yuri Yoshida and China's Ruixin Liu posted the low rounds of the day at eight-under 63. Yoshida finished a clean round with eight birdies and is tied for seventh at nine under, while Liu collected seven birdies and an eagle at the seventh to move into a tie for 12th at seven under.
