Woman Reveals Just How Much 'Microplastic' Was Hiding on Hawaii Beach
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. An ocean conservationist in Hawaii has sparked debate after sharing footage that highlights just how much plastic debris is hiding on our beaches. Carissa Cabrera filmed herself using a screen sifter to sort through the sand on a local beach. With the caption: "When I say microplastics are a problem, this is what I mean," the video revealed just how many tiny plastic fragments came out of the sand. Cabrera, CEO and creative director of climate consultancy Futureswell, said she wanted to illustrate just how severe the issue is in Hawaii. "Isolated in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, I wanted to share the depth and scale of plastic pollution in Hawaii as a result of the ocean currents that bring microplastics ashore with weather," she told Newsweek. "Hawaii is on the frontlines of the plastic crisis, as the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre collects marine debris and delivers [it] to our shorelines—this is debris from countries across the Pacific, and speaks to the scale of the pollution issue. "Plastic pollution is pervasive—with studies having found it in our breast milk, placenta, reproductive organs, air, and clouds. It is found in all corners of the Earth, in everything we use, and it is a toxic material that threatens ocean health and human health," she said. Pictures from the viral video where Carissa shared the plastics hidden on beaches. Pictures from the viral video where Carissa shared the plastics hidden on beaches. @carissaandclimate/TikTok Scientific evidence increasingly supports Cabrera's concerns. Dick Vethaak, an ecotoxicologist at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, told Newsweek: "There is ample evidence that plastic particles pollute the air, drinking water, and food, leading to an ever-increasing risk of inhalation and ingestion on a global scale." Microplastics are particles smaller than five millimeters in length, according to the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). They originate from larger pieces of plastic debris that break down, as well as from microbeads used in products like exfoliants. Recent studies have confirmed that microplastics and nanoplastics (MNPs) are found throughout the human body—including the blood, lungs, liver, kidneys, and even the brain. One 2024 study found that patients with detectable microplastics in their arterial plaque were 4.5 times more likely to experience heart attacks, strokes, or death within three years. Another study revealed higher concentrations of microplastics in the brains of individuals with dementia, with notable accumulations in blood vessel walls and immune cells. Other research also suggests that microplastics may harm other vital organs, including the liver, kidneys, lungs, placenta, testicles, and tonsils. The response to Cabrera's TikTok video, which amassed more than 600,000 views since being shared to @carissaandclimate earlier this month, was mixed, as some people pointed out an issue with the plastics in the screen: "The actual microplastics are too small to be caught in that sifter," said one commenter. While another wrote: "Respectfully those are just small bits of plastic, hazardous and bad for the environment but doesn't carry the same risks as the ones that are in our bodies." But in response, Cabrera pointed out that it is the larger pieces of plastic that eventually break down and become microplastics, that may be impossible to see with the naked eye, but cause the health issues uncovered by recent studies. Having lived in Hawaii for more than a decade and working in marine debris solutions, Cabrera was not personally surprised by the extent of pollution. Rather, she shared the video to educate others. "The reaction on TikTok showed me one thing: the vast majority of people do not understand the scale of this issue and we need to bring it to the forefront to help people and planet," she said. Watch this Granby bear tear decking off to get trash
GRANBY, Mass. (WWLP) – A 22News viewer caught a bear on camera that pulled the railing off the deck to get to the trash. Carissa Kowal of Granby sent a screen recording of her surveillance camera that shows Wednesday at 1:53 a.m., with the outdoor lights on and a black bear just on the other side of the deck railing. It first shows the bear poking its paws through the railing posts at a trash can. If you turn the volume up can then hear as the bear stands on its hind legs rattling the trash can, trying to pick up the bag through the posts. Its paws even thump as it moves across the railing and then yanks on it a few times before breaking the entire piece off. VIDEO: Bear caught stealing bird feeder from Three Rivers yard 'While my husband is going to need to replace it. It was amazing seeing wildlife in New England,' said Carissa. The bear realizes what it has done and sits down looking around… (anyone hear that?). Well, after 0:34 seconds of video, did the bear get away with the trash? 22News contacted Carissa to find out what happened next. 'He was HUGE!!' Carrissa told 22News In a follow-up, Carissa sent another video that shows what the bear did after it took the railing off. About a half hour later, you can see in the next video below, trash is scattered in the yards and on the deck. The next video begins with the bear climbing over the broken railing onto the deck, very quietly. How can bears be so quiet? On the deck, the bear sniffs around, looks to be inches away from the home, turns around, and sits for a few seconds before leaving his wet paw prints on the deck. The bear then takes a trash bag out of the barrel and runs away with it. According to the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife, male black bears generally weigh around 130 to 600 pounds, and females weigh around 100 to 400 pounds. Bears are often drawn to residential areas with unsecured trash and bird feeders. They have a very good memory and can remember the locations of food sources years after they had previously visited. Residents are urged not to feed black bears so they are not reliant on human-associated foods. If you see or hear reports of black bears in your area, it is encouraged to remove bird feeders, protect livestock, and secure trash. If you see a black bear in your yard, wait for it to leave, then remove and secure all food sources on your property. If you have any videos or photos of wildlife near you, share them with 22News by emailing reportit@ WWLP-22News, an NBC affiliate, began broadcasting in March 1953 to provide local news, network, syndicated, and local programming to western Massachusetts. ‘Eternally grateful': San Francisco dispensary owner shot 7 times reunites with woman who helped save life
(KRON) — A San Francisco man and dispensary owner who was shot seven times in an unprovoked attack outside his shop last month reunited with the woman who helped save his life as he lay bleeding on the sidewalk. Oakland homeless encampment added as business on Google Moments before the Jan. 27 shooting, Martin Olive said he was outside his Vapor Room Dispensary at Ninth and Mission streets in the city's SoMa (South of Market) neighborhood, taking a smoke break and looking at his phone. That's when a man approached on an e-bike, walked toward him holding a gun, and opened fire. The San Francisco Police Department said officers were dispatched to the scene just before 5 p.m. Olive said his attacker even shot him twice in the back while he was lying on the sidewalk. He was also shot in the face, arm, and shoulder. The shooter then walked to his apartment, which is in the same building as Olive's dispensary. Police later identified him as 34-year-old Cheasarak Chong. He was later killed in a shootout with officers. San Francisco PD released surveillance and body camera footage of the shooting on Feb. 5. 'It's fantastic I'm not dead,' Olive told KRON4 News in an interview on Feb. 10. 'I did not want to die on 9th Street in the middle of the afternoon. There are definitely nicer places to die in the city. I was genuinely convinced that this was it. I kept closing my eyes and feeling so unbelievably tired, and it felt like giving up and escaping from the pain was sort of my only option. It was relentless, searing pain throughout my entire body.' No clear motive has been found for the attack. Olive said he did not know the shooter. While he is up and walking, he still faces lingering health issues. In an Instagram post on Feb. 12, Olive made a public plea on Instagram to find a woman who had come to his aid the day of the shooting. He called her the 'first of many angels to save my life that day.' 'Social Media! I need your help,' Olive wrote. 'Within seconds of being shot multiple times 2 weeks ago, a woman happened to be walking by, came to my aid. She was a nurse. She literally took the shirt off her back to administer compresses to my bullet wounds. She reassured me, kept my eyes open, and told me she heard the ambulance on its way. She was the first of many angels to save my life that day, and I would like to thank her for her kindness. Does anyone know anyone who knows her?' Two weeks later, on Feb. 25, Olive shared a post on Instagram of an emotional reunion with the woman, named Carissa. Today was a good day. I was able to meet Carissa, the nurse who first found me bleeding out on the street, coincidentally one month ago today. We had ice cream, sat together, talked about what happened, and recognized how this shared moment created a very unique lifelong bond between us. It was an emotionally charged experience to hear how she saw me on the sidewalk, jumped out of her car, and rushed to take care of me while other bystanders just stared at me. It was a rare honor to be able to meet and thank the person who quite literally and without exaggeration, saved my life. I was quickly losing consciousness until her calm presence and compassionate voice brought me back to reality; despite it being an unbelievably painful reality. Hearing her point out the sirens of the ambulance, telling me to keep my eyes open, to breathe, and that I wasn't going to die, while she applied pressure to my bleeding wounds was enough to keep me going just a bit longer. A lot of wonderful people saved me that day. Carissa was the first of them. I'm eternally grateful to her. I hope to see her again soon. — Martin Olive Comments on the post ranged from, 'Amazing that you found her. What a hero,' to 'What a blessing. To you for surviving and to her for saving your life.' The future of Olive's Vapor Room Dispensary, which has been around for more than two decades, remains uncertain. A message on its website reads, 'Vapor Room is currently closed while we regroup after a recent tragedy. We thank all our loyal customers for their years of support. Options for reopening are currently being pursued, and we hope to serve the cannabis community again soon.' A GoFundMe has been organized to help Olive. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
