Can Newtown carnival make a comeback for summer 2026?
Newtown's Carnival Committee have made a plea for volunteers to help make sure the event can return to the Powys town for 2026. While Newtown Carnival shared the news that it could not go ahead with the 2025 carnival earlier this year due to a lack of volunteers, hopes that the event might return in 2026 depend on recruiting volunteers to help with the committee. The 2025 event was cancelled in February, after the committee shared the news that five dedicated volunteers had stepped down with immediate effect and that the remaining members did not have the experience or the capacity to deliver the event planned for June 2025. The committee is now looking for eight volunteers to attend a meeting once a month towards ensuring the event can return for summer 2026, as well as volunteers to help set up the carnival itself. Sharing a plea for help via social media, a Newtown Carnival spokesperson said: 'For Newtown Carnival to return in 2026 as expected, the Carnival Committee requires eight committed people to attend a meeting once a month, plus carrying out tasks occasionally between meetings. 'For the Carnival weekend there are also volunteers required to set up the Carnival lorry, marquees, chairs and tables on the Friday, run the event on the Saturday, then complete take down on the Sunday evening after Silver Band have completed their event. 'Plus we need people to judge the lorries and fancy dress entries, manage the parade route safety, then work on the field during the event.' The committee said current roles in the carnival planning include a chairperson, secretary, treasurer, fundraiser and someone to select the Carnival Queen and King, as well as a pitch manager, route manager and event photographer. Carnival committee meetings are held on the last Tuesday of every month at 6.30pm in the town centre. The carnival spokesperson added: 'So now is the time to step forward. 'If you have experience in running events, have the capacity to commit to the work required, are interested in seeing this much loved community event return for 2026, please send an email to newtowncarnival@ with your contact details, interest and experience. 'We have a lot of fun and the events are highly rewarding for everyone involved, so we hope some people come forward to join us soon, so that we can guarantee the return of Newtown Carnival for 2026.'
